Are bottlenecks between the CPU and GPU an issue with iray?

I am planning to build a new desktop next spring,  the graphics card I'm looking at is a GTX 1060 with 6GB of VRam.

My current desktop has a Phenom 9650 Quad Core with 8GB of Ram and a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot for the GPU.

I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to get this card early to use in my current system or would my current system bottle neck it?

  • I would image that this would depend on the Main Bus Speed of your current system, but from your description you will see an improvement even if it is not the full potential of the GPU.

  • Remember that the 10x0 range is not yet supported for Iray.

When iray supports 10x cards, the 1060 itself will be a bottleneck. Only 1000 cuda. Even the 970 will outpace it.

I'll wait until I see reliable figures; different generations of card, aren't as reliably compared as the same generation.
