Iray is Really... REALLY... FAST

  • I went back and forth about Light Manager Pro.

I think it was one or two rounds with Winterblack Halls that convinced me. ;)

I'm going to check into this product, Will.  Sounds awesome since I need all the help I can get understanding Iray.  (Yes, I know about the huge thread for Newbies -- I'm still sifting through that)

Earlier today, I learned what caustics are used for, and re-rendered the Villa with the Caustics Sampler enabled.  Someone on my DA page suggested I try rendering with just my GTX 980 Ti and no CPU.  This version took 4 hours and 15 minutes.

You can actually see the water reflected on the Villa's roof and subtle variations in its shadow.

I like the water... is that part of the original scene file or did you make changes to the shader/materail settings.

I have been struggling to get water to look right for awhile with iRay. None of the existing shaders/mats have nailed it especially if it is a pool with underwater lights inside it.

Thanks.  I left the water untouched.  I simply turned up the pool lights, changed their color to a light blue to enhance the color of the water shader, and reduced their Luminous Flux.

...as I only have 10.7 GB total free memory (1.3 GB taken up by Windows and system utilities), I often find Iray rendering dropping into swap mode.  When I opened one scene that I rendered a while ago and checked the performance tab in Task Manager it indited I only had 3.8 GB of free memory remaining.   I remember That scene took all night to render (something like 7 - 8 hours) at only 1,200 x 1,200.

With Lux I would have the full 10.7 GB for rendering once I closed the scene and Daz programme down. Really need that 24 GB tri channel kit but also need an OEM of W7 Pro to support it which more than doubles the cost (114$ for the memory + 139$ for the W7 OEM).  That woudl at would prevent the process going into swap mode.  Really wish there was a batch process for Iray to render in background.

Fortunately all my content is on  a separate drive so I only need to back up the Boot/Application drive and wipe it to do a clean install.

  • Being on a Mac, I've not looked into Iray much as I have AMD video. I was a VERY early adopter of Reality and Lux, but it seems to be getting long in the tooth, despire Paolo's best efforts. Iray and its tools are the biggest reason I'd love to see Linux support with Studio. I'd put an Nvidia rig together in a heartbeat, but I'm not going to run Windows on it. Iray Light Manager Pro really looks interesting.

...as I am retired and on a fixed income, building a new rig optimised for Iray is just not  going to happen unless I hit the Megabucks Lotto.  I cannot even afford a 24 GB memory kit along with a Win7 Pro OEM (255$ total) so I can avoid having the process go into swap mode all the time while rendering in CPU mode.
