  • pwToon not showing in Surfaces Tab DS 4.6 Pro

PWToon works fine for me windows 7 DS 4.6.0.18
Just in case - select the figure in the scene tab - select the surfaces you wish to apply the shader too in the surfaces tab apply the shader.
Your Multiple suggests that the shader has applied to something as multiple usually means different shaders on different surfaces.
Try selecting just G2 face in the surfaces tab and applying the shader and see what happens.

  • pwToon not showing in Surfaces Tab DS 4.6 Pro

    Hello -

I am using DS 4.6 Pro on windows 7.
I just bought and installed pwToon_DS4 via DS install manager.
I'm folowing typical shader preset instructions (which work with pre-installed shader presets eg Age of Armour, DS Defaults, Omnifreak). However pwToon does not show up in the surfaces tab as the others do. So I can't access its controls.
I can double click on a pwToon resource and a subtle change occurs to the surface of selected object (genesis 2 female), but on render I can't achieve the surface transformation which the pwToon resource preset is supposed to create. Render settings are: Best - 3Delight

Just to be clear, in the shaders folder there is a pwToon folder containing an icon called pwToon_DS4. When I single click on the icon twenty pwToon resource icons appear. I ctrl + double click on one of these and get a pop up window asking whether to replace or ignore texture map. Click ok and the spining circle appears indicating a process for about three seconds (the edit menu even says I can undo the shader). However as I said above pwToon does not show up in the surfaces tab. All I see is Shader: .

I have tried reinstalling pwToons both from an installer and then manually. But have no success.

I've also read various posts and the poseworks info.

Just wondering if other windows 7 DS 4.6 Pro users are able to use pwToon_DS4?

    Any advice very welcome.

    Thank you - Roberto

Couldn't wait until the weekend; here's a real, real quick test of the warp pack. The unit's "powered down" for testing the pwToon shader.
I'll test it more extensively this weekend, but so far I love it.

    Thanks again.

    @tjohn:

well, I took the risk anyway and bought it a few hours ago and I can tell:
it works fine in D|S 4.5

    @MarcCCTx:
I'm glad you mentioned the fact that it can be mixed with pwToon. I would problaby never thought of doing that.

    Quick&dirty; test:

I like how it mixes with pwToon to get the outline (guy on the left) I like the newspaper strip look.

The geometry shell (right) worked ok as well, and kept original textures.

  • DAZ Render Output Question

Is it possible to get render output similar to the attached image in Studio?

I know about PWToon and Manga Shaders, and Visual Novel Shaders, etc., however, as much as I've fiddled with those, the output has not been close. I know Poser 2014 new comic preview looks pretty good (with Treshold controls for line width, etc.). Can Studio produce similar output with existing tools?

Ha ha ha, I never would have noticed. I'm going to have to make these shaders part of my next purchase. I was looking at making a lot of my props and background elements simple toon shaded things, but if I can bring them out more I would like that. Although I don't think I'd be able to mix the gummy shader with the pwtoon.

  • line art renders

    Merged duplicate threads.

There isn't any built-in way to do that, although you might be able to tweak something out of the toon renders. You could have a look at some add-on shaders - you might, for example, be able to use this free shader http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/21273/ to outline flat-coloured objects, though I haven't tried it. pwToon (in the store) might be another option, though line thickness is variable rather than constant with that.

It should be close to what you are looking for. I don't know of a way to do it in DS without a shader.

  • Doing characters for a comic

    DArnaez said:
Beautiful! Thanks Jorge I forgot that software (Manga) but I already know DAZ Studio and Jason is very close to the character. Now a question... Have the product "Genesis Evolution: Head Morphs" the ability to modify the character Jason for example... or any other? or it have many limitations... I means ... just change the size of nose, ears, lips... I realy would like to make that broken nose as the character have. I am a 3D modeler in 3DS Max and I realy would like to know about Zbrush but I need time. Actually I'm always looking for a ZBrush course to start.

Jason is a Genesis character, and one main advantage Genesis has is that you can mix and match morphs. So yes, you should be able to use the the Evolution morphs on Jason, but you may not get the same results as on a "realistic" character. Still, it's certainly worth a try! You might use the broken nose morph at somewhat less than full strength to get the look you want. Experiment with combinations of different morphs in different strengths until you like the results. :)

If you have 3DS Max, you can make new morphs of your own and import them to DAZ Studio, too. More info here: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/userguide/creating_content/modeling/tutorials/pbms/start

Be sure to look at Bishounen Taurus' Manga Style shaders, or possibly pwToon, to get the outline and shading effects you'll probably want.

Edited to add: also see the Hiro 5 set, which includes Anime Brows that you might find helpful.

  • Shader Mixer- How to undock it, Other Questions

    Novica said:
Lonnie- You helped immensely, not only me, but probably to quite a few people who were wondering the difference. All last night I was using Shader Mixer making neat bricks (yep, figured out some of it!)

    Your quite welcome Cathie.

    Novica said:

Uh oh though- I think I made a BUNCH of dbm's- I used the Shader Mixer File>Save and they weren't applied to the surface. No wonder they weren't showing up under presets in Content Library! (If I read that right? They'll only be in Shader Mixer? I just went in to Shader Mixer, and at least they are all THERE, thank goodness, lol) So darn it, I have to turn these all into dufs.

Clarify for me- the duf's are shader presets, the dbm's are shaders, right?

Yes you read that right. Yes they can only be seen by Mixer. You can think of them that way. As you get more familiar with the software you will find that they all are shaders. It is just that DAZ Studio must have them in the duf format to use. Shader Mixer must have them in the .dbm format to use. Except that DAZ Studio has a bridge that allows a shader to be transferred to Mixer through the option of "From Scene".

    Novica said:
Here's one question: where the options exist to select granite, marble, checker- I'd like to be able to have more options there to tweak- like when you have checker and mess with the horizontal/vertical etc-

Those options, Textures, are called bricks by DAZ Studio. If you are familiar with writing computer code then what they are are routines that you can call when you want certain things to happen. Inside of them are equations, variables, inputs and outputs. They are kind of like calling a subroutine in a program. They contain a lot of information that would clutter up your window so we just bundle them together and give it a descriptive name, like granite. The shaders you made last night are similar. You just did not create the bricks or added them to your Custom Brick list.

so one question is- when you buy shaders, I assume those do not show up in Shader Mixer do they? (You know, like when you add a figure, they show up under Actor?)

You are correct. You usually don't get the dbms. What you get are the .dufs and maybe a set of files that you have not been made aware of yet. These files are the actual code that 3Delight needs. When DAZ puts the render input deck together it references these files. If you are interested in looking at the files (because they are text files with funny extensions) they are located in your Program Files/DAZStudio4 directory. Look for the shader directory and the scripts directory. You will find things like omnifreaker shaders, Uber shaders, the default shaders and any of the special shaders like pwToon and such. The .sl files are 3Delight files and when you look at them you will know why you have Shader Mixer to help you make your shaders. the .dsa, .ds and .dz files are the instructions for DAZ.

Or are we limited to just the options already in Shader Mixer?

No you are not limited. I would suggest that you take a tour inside this thread to see just what can be done with Shader Mixer.
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/42/
Shader Mixer is not the only thing that DAZ offers under Window -> Tabs there is something called Shader Builder. You know those bricks, granite, marble, and such, well you can use this tool to build your own. Shader Builder helps you create all of those files I pointed you too in Program Files/DAZStudio4.

There's no way to put an image into Shader Mixer?

Well I am assuming that what you want to do is have your image show up on the surface of the object. You do this by going to the brickyard, expanding the texture subdirectory and clicking on the Image Map. Once the block is in your shader you can hook it up to what ever you want to. So if you want an image in your squares of your bikini you can use the Image Map and attach it to the checker brick and have an image instead of just a color. Checker brick will accept color so that means images so it should work.

Hope I didn't muddle you up to much.

SO totally fun :D This is why I like being forced to work with things and get ideas like this ^^

I love DAZ characters, Costumes, Motions, Accessories, Shaders.

Just because of the Rendering Speed of DAZ I could never deliver a single project in DAZ in last one year. Since I use Toon Shaders, I can not use Octane, as all Toon Shaders are for 3Delight. I love 3Delight rendering in DAZ. But what's the point if I can not deliver the project in tight schedule. Daz can NOT scale up with network rendering as it uses FREE version of single Core restricted Rendering engine.

I am forced to think of ICLONE as the final delivery engine. ICLONE rendering quality is not that bad in Toon Shade mode. But I always wonder how much better it could be with my PWToon and Visual shader in DAZ !

I wish DAZ could give us ( lesser mortals ) an alternative rendering system with "FOCUS ON RENDERING SPEED WITH MODERATE QUALITY !" Ofcourse support must be there for different Toon Shaders.

Then DAZ would rule in the TELEVISION CARTOON SERIAL PRODUCTION MARKET !

It really depends on your settings, and the scene complexity. For my part, I can render toons pretty quickly (Core i7, 16Gb RAM) since they're one of the less processor intensive methods. However, that said I don't used the toon shader mode built into 3DL, I used shaders designed for toons on the individual surfaces and use the standard renderer.

Details on how you set up a scene and what you'd consider 'fair' for a single frame are key to figuring out the best way for you to render using 3DL. There are a lot of settings you can optimize to get the best out of your machine.

Yes, hiding an item will removed it from the renderer's attention as deleting it will.

Even if we hide objects, DAZ takes a lot of time to render.

I thought when DAZ 4.6 advertised a "New Render Engine", it would change. But it has not. It was just a new update of the same 3Delight engine.

Is DAZ thinking of any solution to improve the rendering speed by 5X ?

Even after one year, after buying many Toon Shaders and other stuff, I am yet to deliver a project to my client

I always end up taking DAZ characters to ICLONE and do the final animation and rendering there !

Different render engines have different strengths. 3Delight is a Renderman compliant engine, so it's really designed for high quality output, Renderman being the same computing giant behind most if not all Pixar movies. iClone's render engine on the other hand is designed more for speed, and takes a lot of shortcuts, including the lack of a raytrace engine. iClone was always designed with animation in mind, which is one of the reasons it takes so many shortcuts and drops in quality. It's not terrible by any means and may be ideal if animation is your goal, but the shaders possible in 3Delight blow anything iClone can manage out of the water.

Long story short, if you want quality then 3DL will work wonders with the right settings. If you want speed, then I recommend either Octane or sticking with iClone.

For my Cartoon episodes, I thought DAZ would be great with Customizable characters, Costumes, Shaders, Motions.
