  • LOVE sculpting "MORPHING" with the new Genesis 9!!!

Some ZBrush crimes combined with Victoria's asymmetry morphs and Nathy's Fantasy Shaping. You can actually change G9's face a lot with the asymmetry morphs just by dialing them up to a high strength in equal proportions.

The face on the stylized Vicky is mostly her morph at 100%, the feminine face at 100%, and then the masculine morph at something like 20% (at that level it just balances the features out).

For some reason I was always really nervous about sculpting on G8/8.1 and now I'm just ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

I plan to switch to Genesis 9 and convert my G8.1 characters once official morphs packs will be released. Since my characters are based on G8 characters (Gia 8, Rynne 8, Lucas 8, etc...), I'm pretty sure their G9 versions will be completely different, so I won't have choice that create morphs in Blender based on their previous apperance.

There are so many improvements in Genesis 9 (especially for expressions and poses) that'll be a pitty to not use them :)

Even with character conversion, the UV's and materials are different, so how would you get around that? You'd likely have to find a different skin altogether for them. Using the UV transfer tool to go from V7 to the base G8 UV is one thing...they aren't all that different...but the difference between G8 to 8.1 to 9 are B.I.G.

As long as you have the UVs for both, DAZ has a map transfer function that is pretty good. It transferred Joe Quick's custom UVs to G8.1 ones with pretty good accuracy.

Most of this stuff can be done, it just takes trial and error and experimenting.

  • The missing toe joint on Genesis models

I know this might be a weird thing for some, but with each generation of Genesis models striving for more realism than the last, I started wondering why their toes only have two joints. The little toes on the human foot have three joints, but while I currently don't have Genesis 9, someone else who does checked and confirmed that it still only has two joints. This lack of a joint can make replicating certain foot poses difficult if not impossible to recreate, and morph add-ons that do try to replicate the third joint being bent run into the issue of not being able to bend back the other way, since that bend is baked into the morph.
I was hoping that Genesis 9 would finally add this, but I guess not...

  • Expressions for Genesis 9?

    AllenArt said:

They do work on the base G9, but they are not like the standard expressions that we usually get. They move eyes as well as the face, which I don't really care for. Normally with most new generations, they release an expressions pack, a head morph pack and a body morph pack. We haven't seen those yet and I have NO idea when we will. The base is pretty useless without them, as is most of the stuff in the store for G9 so far. A lot of it relies on those missing morphs. Daz has been totally bass ackwards on this whole release.

The head and body morphs should come out next week according to Richard. No idea if there will be an expression pack though.

The earlier Genesis figures all have expressions in a sub-folder under Pose Controls for the head. I've looked there for Victoria 9 and there is a Visemes folder but no Expressions. Have they moved the expressions somewhere else or are they not available yet?

I suppose this means we have to wait for expressions to be sold seperatly. It's a bit annoying having a new figure and no way to control the expression on the face.

24 expression dials for V9 here, I don't know if they work on the base G9: https://www.daz3d.com/emotions-expressions-for-victoria-9

  • Genesis 8 or 8.1 shapes on genesis 9?

Transfer Utility seems pretty effective. This example transferred a character body and head, Body Pressure morphs for the top and bottom, Fitness and Fitness Details. Also the Auto-Fit for Hair, Clothes, Body Hair and Accessories all worked with minor tweaking (Mesh Smoothing, and/or Push Modifier) Baseline G9 Female skin seems to look pretty good. The G9 does seem to be a bigger resource demander though. The attached PDF is not specifically moving G8,8.1 morphs to G9, but goes thru the steps using two other figures, should aid those not familiar with the Transfer Utility. It's kind of fun trying a new figure, still really like the G8 platform though.  TD

  • Victoria 9 HD Pre Purchase Disappointment Issues

    nwleee_a52bfead84 said:

I'm glad I'm not the only one disappointed with the way Daz rolled out G9.  First of all the Victoria 9 character....two skin choices, freckled and vitiligo?!?!  I will never use vitiligo (and I read a lot of other people won't either), I just don't understand why they didn't offer freckled and just a regular skin texture (with no moles, freckles, blemishes, warts, or big patches of different colored skin).
Also not releasing a morph pack, with body and face morphs is also hard to understand. Instead we get a "starter pack" with a million choices of eyebrows and eyelashes.
As shadowhawk1 said, this release is a train wreck. Poor planning, poor implementation.

I mostly see complaints about botched presale and issues with people not figuring out the difference between the starter essentials, the character essentials, and what comes with them and what comes with the Victoria bundle. Here I agree Daz dropped the proverbial ball, and it has been more or less a textbook example on how not to handle sales. I'm usually not big on the whole demanding apology thing, unless it comes with a monetary compensation, but I'd be happy to join the torches and pitchforks folks if this happened to me. Actually I do believe Daz should come out and apologize to those who preordered in the form of, say, "Sorry, we screwed up your pre-orders. Here's $15. Get yourself character essentials or something nice" voucher.

This doesn't affect me, mind you, since I didn't buy Victoria. Even less preordered her.

It's not because of the skins though. It's just that I don't do a lot of female renders. Yet, I firmly disagree on the skin "issue" and it's mostly the same few people complaining about stuff like that on forums. Still, the forums are hardly a good representative of the situation since people who are unsatisfied tend to be louder here - and I doubt Daz releases any info about how well Victoria sold and/or how many refunds were demanded, and about how many of those were because people didn't like the skin.

The thing is that there are only so many ways to create a skin with "with no moles, freckles, blemishes, warts, or big patches of different colored skin" (as you put it) before they all look the same and for that we have base skins which do perfectly good job on it in my opinion. I mean how many real skins come blemish free anyway? If you check yours, I bet you have at least a few moles if nothing else. I'd rather have interesting and varied characters and skins, and my concern is that because of the few complains Daz and some PAs might get idea that people don't want such skins. I firmly believe that is not the case. Besides I still believe the idea was partially to illustrate highly detailed skin details.

This doesn't affect me currently but I'm fully hoping we get some nice and interesting skins with Michael release, too. Now the way how this is implemented is of course up to debate and I'm not against having unblemished base skins (which we technically already have). As long as I also get something more than just a bland basic skin and a character shape for my money.

YMMV and of course there's always the refund way if you want to protest. It's bound to show Daz your dissatisfaction - or at least the poor (likely overworked) support guy or gal who has to process it manually.

    Edit: weird double entry

So are the base male ones they haven't actually bothered to redo the base poses for a male, if this is any indication of what is to come from PA's no attention to the male figure a all, G9 is a total waste of time for me. You would have thought the PAs would realise that poses for a female do not transfer to a male without alterations; men and women, as a rule stand ect differently and few men stand round on their toes with arched backs and their bums sticking out.

This, more than anything else.  I am used to not getting a lot of male content and understand the reasons why that is.  The pose thing actually made me a bit angry. It felt like they are giving the middle finger to anyone who wants to render male characters.

Also, lets be honest, there aren't a whole lot of women who stand around that way either.

Would it be possible to get the "Youth Posture" morph for G9?

It's indispensable for me as it cures the "wet noodle" spine most characters suffer from.

Not sure I should refer to the human spine as a spine now that everything is labeled spine. :( this is going to make for some confusing conversations.

The problem is with the encrypted script (.dse) and not necessarily the script itself.  They are not backwards compatible, so if the script was encrypted in DS 4.20 it will only work in 4.20 and newer.

If Zev0's fantastic coder bitwelder would have encrypted the script in an earlier version such as 4.9, 4.10, 4.11, or 4.12, then it would have worked for all versions from 4.9 onwards (or whichever version + onwards).

If the script was an 'open' (.dsa) script, there wouldn't be an issue, but we can't have that can we?

So, no hope of a simple fix then?  I've bought every prior product Zev has ever released, including the ones from the other two stores, and I'd hate to have to put him on the "do not buy from list" going forward.

I've got 4.14 as my main production version, and a 4.15.something public build installed as well. I ran into the issue to, but loading up the scene in 4.15, running the script there, saving the clothing item out as a wearable preset and loading the preset back into the scene in 4.14 worked a charm.
I'm loving this product, I used to get rid of these kind of autofit issues by saving the unwanted autofit change to geometry as a morph and then dialing that in at -100%, but this is so much better.

I've been playing with it a bit now.  Here are my observations so far:

    1. The textures are great, and with good lighting the models look amazingly realistic.

    2. The posing and corrective morphs are way better than G8.

    3. Hair from G8 seems to fit better on custom morphs on a G9 than a G8.

    1. Yes
    2. Yes
    3. Yes
    but...
G9 looks like a face model only.
Her/His torso and limbs mesh topolgy is made of strikt quads, that don't follow natural muscles with edge loops. Muscles in neck or abdomen are hard to morph, unless you are a PA and have access to HD tools.
This makes it also hard to export G9 to other apps.
Overall I am really not happy about G9.
I have been very optimistic and supportiv about G9 and now I am mostly disappointed.
G9 needs a lot of fixing geografts, that will turn her/him into a data monster.
Oh, and I really hate that unimesh thingy.

There appears to be an eye position issue, specifically around the lateral canthus. The attachments should show the issue clearly. The issue is exacerbated when the 'GU Youth Head Proportion' is used - there is pokethrough of the EyeMoisture surface. Through the character's left pupil you can see the head surface within the eyeball itself.

Can anyone else verify a similar thing? I've got nothing else installed at the moment than G9 + GU.

I think the GU head morph has lost a lot of thickness in this area, compared to G9 base, which might also be having an effect. I wonder if it would be better to keep a comparable, relative thickness and let character morphs adjust this area rather than having to thicken it back up? That's more a side thought than the issue above.

Ah thanks. I actually fixed this but the morph was saved outside the packaged folder.

    instead of saving it to

    /data/Daz 3D/Genesis 9/Genesis 9 Eyes/Morphs/Zev0/Growing Up/GU Head Proportions Eye Neg.dsf

    I saved it to

    /data/Daz 3D/Genesis 9/Genesis 9 Eyes/Morphs/Zev0/test/GU Head Proportions Eye Neg.dsf

So ill add it back in with correct path.

This way gives V9 her own day of glory so to speak ;-)

I'm fairly sure that the morph bundles, etc. will follow over the next weeks, months, etc. as they usually do.

I for one am not disappointed with the Bundle although a little surprized that the a.e. have to be yet another purchase - but the price isn't bad at all. And for those down the road in time I'm sure they will appreciate that they don't have to shell out for a full Pro bundle just to get a set.

If you are refiring to the anatomical elements they are available in The 'Genesis 9 Character Essentials'. Read the description.

    Quoted from store page:

    This product includes:

    • *Includes geometry for anatomical elements. Textures are not included in this product and are provided by certain character products.

You just don't get matching textures for the default skin textures supplied with Genesis 9.

From a commercial standpoint (sic!) it would be better to ignore reality and facts and just make one set of poses to fit them all... a lot more cost efficient that is. And it avoids gendering the personalities of your G9 figures against their will. devil

  • importing higher subd meshes as morphs for G9 (and older) figures

    Hello everyone,

If I export G9 base resolution mesh to Blender, do some sculpting, I can then reimport back into Daz as a morph no problem, everything works fine, works with unmorped base figure, or male/female morphs the same.

But I want to work in more detail on the figure, exporting higher subd to Blender is not a problem, it does export from Daz and import into Blender ok, but trying to get back into Daz I get the "Geometry did not match".

I tried googling a solution for this, but couldn't find a solution, though I did see a few hints that Daz by design doesn't permit this, just wanted to confirm if this is the case? The rumour was that some special in house tool is being used to do this sort of thing?
