  • I'm having issues with rigging my ponytail.

Thanks, SickleYield, that explains a lot. I had to reconfigure the groups, they were different sizes so I had to add a lot of lines for bending room and redo them. "i'm back on track now.

The last time I seriously rigged something was 10 years ago. The staff that I used to refresh myself had the parametric joint rigging grandfathered in because that was originally made for generation 4 too. I might update its rigging and see if it bends any better, but it has two layers to the flame, the inner, which is pwtoon shaded, and the outer, which is pwghost shaded. That might make weight painting difficult.

    Thanks guys.

TheNathanParable, did you use any specific shader to render that cel shading image? It's awesome.

It's a WIP shader i've been working on for a while now, though progress has slowed. The outlines were generated using LineRender9000.

If you wanted to recreate this specific look though, you could use either Visual Style or pwToon and then combine them with LineRender9000.

I'll try those shader presets, thanks.

So, well. I also have manga style shaders, and it helped me to get workaround. If i apply manga style first, and then apply pwtoon, it somehow works better. I don't know why, perhaps manga shader changes something important which stays even if i dont use it.

It works more or less like pwtoon should be (in case with manga style shader, shadow on hair would be totally black instead)

  • PWToon and Hair

Yes, that's how pwToon makes must hair look and your image posted says pwToon is the shader in use and the material surface setup is also 3DL.

You can supplement pwToon's material settings with Cresent's toon ahaders which I think makes but the hair, clothing, and skin look better than pwTon alone.

And it actually says Shader: pwToon at top-left of the Surfaces pane?

Should be, before applying changes it shows "diffuse colour" as multiple, and after applying pwtoon with presetes it shows specific colour like it should be.

But when i render, hair looks realistic

How do i make PWToon work on hair? It works nice on people and clothes, but with hair i dont get cartoon rendering. What should i change?

  • More Non-photorealisitic Renders (NPR II)

Just an attempt at a anime faux-screen grab. I realize that scanlines on a widscreen display comes off as anachronistic, but it's mainly just for effect. For those wondering about the particulars, its PwToon and some Photoshop post.

Interlace lines are definitely old-fashioned, but they still work as a visual shorthand to let us know this is a monitor or screenshot. Nicely done.

  • Why doesn't all the joints bend the same way?
Well yes it is a cr2. However I tried updating the obj and got an empty figure. How would I update it from legacy to the new style figure?

As long as the group names are unchanged that should not happen - that is, the groups in the welded mesh are the same as the names for the separate mesh objects in the unwelded version (assuming it's a single OBJ, not an assemply of separate OBJ files).

ah, that was my problem, but I did the weight mapping and transfer tool and it seems up to date now. I'm not 100% sure. Here is a quick IK based render with my updated mesh. Did I manage to update it properly?

I also added a second layer to the flames, using PWghost and PWtoon to see how it came out, I think it came out pretty good, toony and a little like a flickering flame, while keeping the outline. It takes little time to render but transparent hair does the same, that's why I'm trying to make my own hair that doesn't need a transparency. You can see a sample here, which I posted on the forums to see if there was a market for it. Once I figure out how to rig quickly I'll make my comic hair then hair for the market to make a little spare money. I do have a lot of hair fitted to various other characters of mine, I just need to update them to all the Genesis models.

Blew the dust off of PWToon, because I haven't used it since I got the new computer, and decided to make a little something. One of my online friends uses the "Zombies, Run!" app. Its kind of an excercise buddy, that augments your daily run/jog with an interactive zombie apocalypse story. So this is kinda based off the stuff she's posted to me about it.

I like this and the others you posted, I always did like PWToon, and the blend with the background on this and the photo example work really well!

    Hey folks, how the Summer?

I made some good money and cash selling physical copies of my first comic book, Journey to Aaru. Its a story set in a grim future, where 2 Egyptian Techies guide a mysterous android to his "afterlife." Its a story of consequences, the pursuit of dreams, artifical intelligence, and most importantly, the human heart. The story is broken down to 13 chapters, mixed with Traditional, digital, and a now miminal use of Daz3d for environments and props. With the funding, feedback, and praises of the comic, I will continue on until the story is finish.

Here are 4 major characters, one more on the way!

Congratulations on the success of the comic! And very nice character studies, thanks for sharing! They have a good, consistent feel across all of them, and a lot of character.

Carrara Job, Topaz Impression and Filter Forge , plus Oloneo to brink out the details before those filters were applied

Nice on the details, in the large view it really looks like brush strokes, very cool!

Since the Collada exporter from Unity and Polygon Adventure Pack was updated, it was a time to give it a go.

I have rendered exported collada scene in Daz Studio iray and processed render in Topaz Studio.

I like seeing all the different effects, but this one in particular really stuck out to me. A very cool effect and a good scene to show it off, I like the color contrast in the composition.

I haven't posted in ages because of work. I thought I would post a WIP of something I'm working on.

Looking forward to see more of this one! Awesome work!

Haven't done anything that fit the thread in a while. I was working on this back in January or February originally, but other things distracted me and I kind of lost my train of thought on this. I haven't completely finished this, it is supposed to be a series of panels as an exercise in page layouts, but I haven't had enough motivation. I liked the direction it was going though, so hoping that after sitting with these for a while I will get back into it. Still working on getting a good balance of clean, thin lines on architecture, but it's getting better.

Love the Noir atmosphere in this. PWtoon has its great advantages for easier rendering and cool effects, as vrba79 has said.

Looks good. PWToon is right in that sweet spot, in terms of versatility and user friendlyness. I've gotten my money's worth out of it a hundred times over, at least.

  • "Sketchy" could use a more comprehensive tutorial.

I got frustrated, trying to learn Sketchy, so I went back to PwToon. It would be nice if the creator could give examples of how to at least achieve the different looks in th example pics. The video on the product page just doesn't give enough information.

So, backstory on this character, is that she's from a comic I abandoned about five years ago.

The original version of the character was made with Genesis 1 morphs. This verison with Genesis 2. Yet I somehow managed to recreate her look from memory.

Like the "Runner" pic I posted earlier, this is done with PWtoon + a UE light. The background is stock photo that I did a faded blur effect on.

Very cool. I normally don't like the contrast between cartoon figures and photo backgrounds, but in this case it works. I like the outlines on the body and clothes, although the hair looks a little soft in comparison to the other outlines. Nice job!

  • Toon shader impossible ?

Mmmm...ok...I must say I don't really understand , because the toon shader used is under an iRay menu...

I'll see if I'll buy manga shader style, or something like that. I must do many trie to see how far I can go.

Thanx a lot for the answer. :)

No, it's not under iRay, not DAZ Uber or the nVidia iRay shader material but it is under DS Default shaders and even though it doesn't say it, those toon shaders that come free with DAZ Studio are 3DL.

The shaders used are actually located under Content Library tab - <your DAZ Content Library folder name - mine happens to be just 'Library'> -  Shader Presets - DS Defaults

However if you are going to buy a product to do Toon Shading then pwToon + pwGhost are the best two to buy or you can buy the bundle that contains all of the pw Shaders if you can afford it. Those are also 3DL.

There aren't good toon shaders for iRay. In iRay, best you can do is strip most textures and apply colors and shader settings that will give them a claymation or waxy look that flattens out with too little or too much light. Given the mediocre results and oodles extra render time to do iRay renders compared to the pwToon shaders in 3DL (or opposed to just a biased 3DL 'realistic' scene which takes longer most times than either iRay or pw Shader scenes.

A scene with only pw Shaders rendered in 3DL takes seconds, not minutes or hours.
