  • Will there be a "Filament to Iray" converter?

RSSY's "3Delight to Iray" and "Iray to 3Delight" coverters were a Godsend.

With so many of my purchases being one or the other, being able to convert both ways was essential. Of course, with the demise of 3Delight, that will only be going in 1 direction now.

Naturally, back when they came up with the "3Delight & Iray to Filament", I snagged that utility right up!

But I'm wondering when they'll be making the "Filament to Iray" converter... I've noticed we're starting to get more and more products that are only in Filamentblush

Need some help here... 3Delight and Iray to Filament won't load in Daz 4.24. It gives the "An error ocurred while reading the file" message. Here's the log file. Thanks in advance.

    Guys?

Er... I don't see any new filatoon products in the store, just a bunch of old stuff.

That's not old stuff, it's a new version based on the Daz animals of previous 3DU standalone figures.

And OP did notice that there isn't any new filatoon stuff. That was their point: a bunch of new toon stuff was released, which was the perfect opportunity for filatoon stuff, but there's none.
Hopefully there will be a filatoon add-on for the animals later, they made one for toon Generations 9 so there's hope.

The "old stuff I was referring to were the items in the "60% Off Select Toon & Anime Items" selection.

:head hitting wall: Again, this is my point. Daz commissioned Toons and ignored completely filatoon support.

Bless you for understanding what I posted. I guess I should have added "This is sarcasm" at the end of it.

Wasn't a converter made to do it yourself? I'm being serious. I have memory issues.

Yes, there are converters available. I have these two and they work well: https://www.daz3d.com/easy-filatoon and https://www.daz3d.com/v3d-filatoon-converter-manager-and-tools

But having materials and textures optimized for Filatoon enables you to get different results from "textures made for Iray and then converted to Filatoon".

This again. I have both converters. They are great for what they CAN do. I want native support. Converted assets, as Leana points out, are never as good as purpose built native assets.

Why does it exist if they don't ever support it? And yes, I've heard the comments that the PAs probably feel it isn't worth supporting because it doesn't generate sales. Isn't that a self fulfilling prophecy if Daz doesn't ask PAs to support it in DO products? Here they commissioned a bunch of TOON avatars and neglected their toon render engine. Madness.

  • BJ Wicked - Realtime Raytracing/Pathtracing in Daz Studio

@bluejaunte FWIW, I end up fiddling with materials for most everything, even for Iray. It's rare that an asset loads and it's right where I want it. If you get close and the results look good, that's already going to be a win. My hope is that your project will deliver fast renders that are a bit more feature rich than we've seen from filament.

I'm a lot more interested in this than I would be in cycles. I like filament, though it's limited. I like fast rendering. I should also say, Iray materials usually need a lot of adjustment to work properly in Filament. Even then, layered transparency is a problem. Your test renders look pretty good.

Is this the same as the Cycles plugin you were working on, or is this a separate product? Toward the end, you compare it to Eevee.

Nah this is a different renderer based on WickedEngine, a full blown game engine. Real time ish as Eevee. Or Filament if it was good smiley

Filament would be a great render engine if DAZ could plumb in all of the capabilities of Filament... like better shadows, emissives, reflections, lighting, etc...

  • Is it possible for a 3rd party render option for DS4?

    DrunkMonkeyProductions said:

It's possble, but if history is any indication, highly unlikely.

The main problem is going to be product support.

Are PA's/content cretors going to develop for two different render engines?

Are Ds users going to even use it?

And, are devs going commit to it?

Prior to Iray coming along, we had acces to Lux Render(which is also open source), via Paolo Ciccone's Reality plug in, and later Luxus by Spheric labs.

AFaik, neither received any support from other PA's, and both had been developmentally dead for years prior to their removal form the daz store in 2021 and 2020 repectively.

Relaity went open source long before it was NLA'd and is up on github.  I've seen a few attemptes to update it, but those have also been dead for years.

Not sure if Luxus still works, but it's NLA and locked to an almost 10 year old version of lux render, iirc.

We currently have accesss to Octane render, and again, PA support is basically non-existent, with 3 whole products that come up when i search the daz store for Octane render.

3delight support had massively declined prior to it's removal, with very few(if any) products having 3delight presets for several years.

Filament(which is open source) is an iffy. it's gotten some PA support, but it's not all that much for something that's been around for ~5 years.

Coming from a user perspective, the only thing that matters is if it's signifiantly faster at rendering on the same hardware than iray(wth indistinguishable results),  that render savings isn't completely lost in the conversion process, and, ti's stupid easy to convert the assets(one click, done).

Short of that, user support is going to be non-existent, except for some of the more hardcore types.

I think the important question to ask is, is a developer going to see a decent return from their renderer. Enough to justify continued delelopment/improvement. Probably not.

  • I'm Sorry, Filament. I guess you really do Rock!!!

Not in DS6 it doesn't, lol. I was all excited because of the tabbed content library. And colored hierarchy nodes were finally here, ten years late. I was willing to put up with how slow the viewport is, and the hilariously bad "filament dies for five seconds every time you save anything" bug.
But no rotating the environment node dome light anymore? Nah, the hell with that. Filament is pretty much useless without some way to rotate the light. Back to DS4 for me...

I wish I understood the UV mapping of those billboards

Which ones? The Now-Crowd ones are just flat planes - they'll take any texture really - just need the opacity maps (and a ton of patience for rendering out all the angles, even with automation).

The Colosseum ones appear to be just a bunch of characters in a grid (with some wasted space it seems). The length of billboard has been cut as a uv-map into rectangles and arranged top to bottom. I'd have to bring it into Blender to get more info. Not sure how you're getting "all the same figure"?

the ones Protozoon includes in the colosseum

    using as is OK

animated image render scripts give the same figure

it's also quite painful to set up as need to do cutout opacity and so many surfaces

I loathe how DAZ studio handles image animation at the best of times and that set impossible to export to other software

Filament does render them, but the way it does with cutout opacity

the video is of the Hunyuan meshes created from the billboard images I am slowly populating it with duplicated  instances

I wanted to create an animated crowd just rendering looping frames manually swapping the textures but I get all the same figure

I suspect it's a shadermixer nightmare and cannot use animated texture scripts either

    it also rules out Filament

after spending all day animating the figures creating diffuse and alpha series surprise

even using AI locally on my PC, that was a lot of work

I did use Hunyuan 3D to create 3D versions of the billboards for the foreground seats

have 3 instances of each, may do more

  • The "Animators Assemble!" thread for Daz animation WIPs, clips, and tips

    SapphireBlue said:

Popping in here after a while. I finally managed to get back to FilaToon for a second music video project. This time I wanted to do a comic/graphic novel style narrative with some action thrown in, as my song was a higher energy Pop DnB track. I decided to go with mostly camera animations as I felt that would suit the style (and be time-friendly).

With a static scene, camera animations for my FilaToon scenes render lightning fast. 5 seconds (120 frames) rendered mostly in 10-15 seconds. Any figure animation took that up to more like 15 minutes for the same 120 frames. But with render times like that, it makes a project like this feasible in a short time frame. What added most to the time was trying to work with up to 10 G9's in DAZ Studio which slowed things to a frustrating crawl, especially when loading figures and props, duplicating props, converting something to FilaToon etc. In the future, I'll try to stick to 4 or 5 figures max. Using the LowPi figure for some background figures also works great in FilaToon, so that helps when we need to fill out scenes.

Love how versatile and fast FilaToon is and how good it looks with different styles! I created some hashline images in Photoshop to overlay on the clean rendered scenes to create a more gritty look, along with some paper and dirt textures and a vignette.

(YouTube often starts playing these videos at a very low resolution making it rather blurry. Just switch to 720 or 1080 in the playback setting to get it looking closer to the rendered versions. I rendered the scenes at 1920 x 1080 res.)

brilliant work! My favorite of yours yet! brava!

quick backstory here - your video is actually brilliantly validating something I've wondered about for a long long time that was inspired by Smith-Micro's web-comic product "MotionArtist"? (mixed still imagery and motion elements w voyer-like camera motion) to do what I once called "moving comics" - as an update for our contemporary media world... (FWIW, it's something I merely appreciated when I saw it done, rather than cleverly imagined from a vacuum, etc. I could picture so many stories in my mind using these visual tools: "Oh, that's cooool, I want to do stuff in a style like that...")

Since then, I've always been concerned about whether or not it could be done in an engaging enough manner to maintain a viewer's interest through an entire storyline as compared to traditional still-frames. My concern was always that its novelty would quickly wear thin... Motion Artist's biggest failing to me is/was the need for a 'next-next-next' interface, but it is/was very bandwidth-friendly, once loaded locally - when bndwidth was still an issue back when it came out in 2013 (!).

Anyway, SapphireBlue, your video is incredibly compelling with the moving orbital frame story-telling style you employed! I was especially intrigued with the subtle in-frame motions you added to some of the characters in the otherwise 'freeze-frame' orbitals. Totally nailing some of my notional curiousities, and surpassing my expectations as to how powerful and interesting it could be. Watching your video, I think a full length story or series could be done in this style and hold up nicely! You also confirm my sensibility that filament/filatoon is a serious vehicle for a toon-styled story-telling framework.

That your mini-story is clear and complete, and set to your wonderful sound-track only adds to my enjoyment and inspiration. As I miss the original MTV story video era (e.g. Take On Me, by Aha! - brilliant), you video was a nice reminder of that kind of power and potential of the music-video format. Thanks for posting that, and I hope you don't mind if I brazenly filch and leverage your wonderful framing techniques in my works! I am *so* inspired by this piece! (Shoulders of giants, etc...yes)

    brava, brava, brava!

I don't want to derail this thread but there is always the possibility that an alternative to current hardware for VRAM and CPU rendering may yet be developed, maybe with or without the help of those AI agents they are embracing to solve everything. Alternative materials that are not scarce for manufacturing computer components and can be mass produced cheaper for both their data farms and consumer use..I actually suspect it already exists but a false scarcity is created for profit.

The thing is open communities such as Blender one do exist so there is always hope technology can be shared that is not kept from the public by patents and corporate greed.

Agreed!  Would be awesome to not be married to NVidia for rendering, and something for people with limited funds to be able to get into the hobby.  GenAI would be a decent concept for it, even if it was in an enclosed ecosphere.  It'd be easy enough to image-2-image a render and could even achieve nearly realtime rendering.  Playing around with local models, you can even take a filament or texture shaded image, run it through certain models with low image creativity (so the AI just copies the exact scene nearly 1:1) all it does effectively is replace the textures to make it look...well, however you want.  Want hyper-realistic?  Put that in the prompt.  Cell-shaded?  That works too, etc.

  • BJ Cycles - Cycles Renderer in Daz Studio

@jmucciello I covered extra work in iray in my post.

It's unfortunate that the filament renderer has not received more attention. In DS, the biggest single drawback for me is the way it doesn't handle layered transparency. It's most evident in the popping effect seen in card hair. And no, filatoon didn't fix the problem. It simply sets hair to full visible. I found one can selectively set hair surfaces so they are opaque and leave the tip surfaces transparent. It's a compromise. Short hair seems to work better than long hair.

The only alternative is to use dedicated anime hairs where the hair is modeled as an opaque sculptural 3d form. Folks looking for maximum realism will likely be dissatisfied with all that, but it can work for some situations.

It's my observation that, no matter what the tool or feature, someone somewhere is using it to do something awesome.
