  • CAR AND BIKE LOVERS THREAD - MARK IV

Crows and Chevys - a Vue render I did in 2009 using two Sketchup models from 3D Warehouse (in 2009 I guess it was called Google Warehouse)...

It was still the 3D Warehouse then, but it was associated more with Google then Trimble then, I would imagine that Trimble is actually a part of Google!

  • GENERAL FREEBIE REQUESTS Part 2

Here in the UK we use front doors with letterboxes. So I'm looking either for such a door or a letterbox.

    Free includes obj format: https://www.cgtrader.com/free-3d-models/architectural/door/door--10

    Sketchup format: https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model/e0a364c4-09c2-4897-a802-9aafee049475/Exterior-House-Door and https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model/ab3d01cdcdd7115910eab5c01cf505db/Victorian-Door-Large

    Thank you!

I have to admit that in the end I sent Northern Terrace Street to Hex and cut everything out apart from the required door. Your links are handy for future use tho!

  • Non-photorealistic Renders (NPR)

A npr render in Vue Complete I did a year or two ago. Car is a free Sketchup model of a 1953 Chevrolet low rider from 3DWareho

Well done, I love your style a lot!

Thanks kindly... I've not been doing much 3D lately as I'm still processing photos from summer past (car show, landscapes, scenes, etc)...

Here's another free Sketchup model rendered a couple of years back in Vue Complete with Vue's npr option...

Art, classic cars, hot rods, comic books, art deco, era of Bettie Page pinup art....  all seem to go hand in hand... :-)

  • best software?

Sketchup is great for making background buildings. But unfortumately it does a terrible job exporting as OBJs because the software uses Booleans to create the geometry and they do not always optimize well when exporting as OBJs. You're really best off using Hexagon or another vertex modeller and creating buildings with the proper geometry in the first place.

Now if you're making background buildings I have a very simple low poly kit on ShareCG for making simple background buildings. https://www.sharecg.com/v/86235/view/21/DAZ-Studio/Ghastlys-10-Metre-Cube-Architecture-Kit

  • best software?

The short answer is the one you feel most comofortable with, out of those you can afford.

DS will import OBJ, FBX, and Collada - I'm not sure if the free SketchUp will write to any of those but if not there are converters.

Only the paid version of Sketchup will export to obj. However, after the 30 day pro trial period that is included with the free version expires there are free 3rd  party plugins that will allow you to export to obj: https://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/lipid-obj-exporter-sketchup

What is the best software for creating buildings? props?

Is it possible to import something created on like Sketchup into Daz?

I'd recommend Hexagon, since you can send them directly into DAZ Studio via a built-in bridge.

If you have SketchUp....there are quite a few decent models in their model warehouse...nothing heavily detailed, however....gotta pay for the quality stuff.sad

  • Anyone use TruForm's Cars?

I don't have any of those, but they should work with Iray fine. You will probably have to adjust or changes the shaders, but it's not hard at all

Here is an example. I found this nice Aston Martin at the 3Dwarehouse for sketchup, so obviously it's in a non DS format with absolutely no IRAY materials at all. I converted it to .OBJ and stripped all the materials off of it (5 minutes work for me)

Here it is with the untoched version imported fresh into DS and an Iray version 5 minutes later using the default Uber IRAY shaders in DS and a little tweaking and then saved for future use.

Merry Christmas everyone....Santa's New Sleigh I did a few years ago in 2010. Rendered in Vue. I modeled Santa's hot rod in Sketchup and painted in the Santa figure in via ArtRage. I used Photoshop and Topaz Adjust to give the image a paintery look...

I like this. Definitely the sort of thing that brings a smile to my face this time of year.

  • CAR AND BIKE LOVERS THREAD - MARK IV

Are you using Sketchup Pro or Sketchup Make? I've tried Sketchup Make and a couple of free ruby script plugins, but the results were often hit or miss...

Sketchup Make, but when I was regularly using 2014, somehow they had messed up and I was still able to export obj's, can't do that with the newer version on my new computer.

That's typical with Sketchup models some work out some don't
