  • Heads up re: my free content

This really isn't the place to talk about it but I wouldn't particularly recommend anyone consider doing business there or using that site for any purpose. If you are curious you can check out their site forum and you'll see lots of discussion about this. Thanks.

  • Please help me find a Dforce skirt with a ruffle that starts out as a circle around waist

    Jan_Scrapper said:

    crosswind said:

I know nothing about Meshy but I checked the skirt you attached. Actually vertices / faces count is not an issue but the topology is. Such triangle topo is not really good for dForce but the biggest problem is that the mesh density on the edge of skirt / ruffle is too high. That'll bring explosion no matter how you tweak the settings on dForce dynamic surfaces. You have to need a retopology or remesh on the skirt, like what I showed in screenshot 1, on the right.

Another problem is the gemetry of the skirt is not fully welded, on the lower ruffle. Not sure if you can make it welded in Meshy but if it's not welded, the lower ruffle will be drapping separately. (screenshot 2) But welding geometry is not a simple task, you even have to unwrap UV again... etc.

Thank you so much for checking the skirt.  I saw that the second ruffle was not attached.  I think I can remove that in Blender or Carrara.  The ONLY things I know how to do is remove geometry, decimate in Blender and create Material Zones in Blender.  I wish I understood how to do create a texture map.  I hope to learn:  UV Mapping and UV Unwrapping.

2 days ago, I could not apply Material Zones in Blender, but today, I can.

So, there is hope for me.

"You have to need a retopology or remesh on the skirt, like what I showed in screenshot 1, on the right."   I will have to look that up and learn what you did.

Ah, that's great if you've been learning Blender ! Though I use a Quad Remesh add-on to retop the skirt but you can firstly try the Remesh modifier in Blender or search other good remesh add-on on superhive. As for UV mapping / unwrapping, there're lots of tutorials on youtube.

Well, for this case, maybe you can firstly try: cut out the lower ruffle from the skirt, re-import it  then use multiple Rigid Follow Nodes on the lower ruffle so as to "attach" it to the upper skirt / ruffle, then finetune the dynamic surface settings on it, especially cranking up Buckling Stiffness. Then when drapping, at least the lower ruffle can preserve its position to some extent ~~

  • Off Topic Thread #2

Thanks for your reply, Steve.  Earlier in the year I was recovering from a bone removal operation on my wrist.  For a long time before that I could hardly do anything with my hands due to pain.  Now that I can use my right hand again, I would like to get back into real drawing and painting.  Much as I would like to set up a studio to walk into and work most days, I'm currently spending most of my days with someone close who is receiving end-of-life care.  That isn't mentioned for sympathy - the commitment generally means that I'm not good at keeping up forum discussions.  (once a day or two has passed, I feel I shouldn't have people click on a thread just to see a brief thank you or whatever -which is probably wrong.)

The set-up I described, though, is all I could ask for in the meantime.  The screen size and pen combination just feels perfect.  As for Clip Studio, there are many great alternative drawing packages but not all have animation tools.

    Best regards.

  • Smart Content not updating just-installed items: Solved

In all these years, I've never had any Smart Content issues, but today, I bought a few items, installed them as usual, and while they can be seen in the Content Library tab - they are installed - Smart Content is not showing anything new since the previous items I installed, which was either yesterday or the day before.

I've found a few forum threads across many years, under varying conditions, of addressing this problem and just wanted to be sure of what would be the correct steps here. I did not change or add any install paths and when spot-checking the items, they are installed right where they should be - just the database didn't get the memo.

I am guessing that I pick the hamburger menu option from the Smart Content panel -> Content DB Maintenance, perhaps? Is that correct? If so, which options? I'd rather confirm before proceeding. Thanks!

  • Nice touch -- AI use or not, making a choice

Friends! A good weekend to you all. Hopefully you're getting some respite from the sweltering heat.

This is turning out to be a summer of discontent, and here in the Daz Forums the topic of contention has been about generative AI in 3D art, specificially in Daz products, and more generally as it touches other parts of our lives. The AI genie is out. The AI horse has bolted the barn. Change of this sort and scale is discombobulating and upsetting.

It appears that everyone has a staked out some sort of polarized view about generative AI. As a dumb engineer with rudimentary "art" cred, I don't have anything new to contribute. But I do want to ask you, friends, to keep the disucssion civil.

Now, seeing that we all come from different walks of life, different cultures -- even different parts of the world -- we can quibble about the meaning of civility. But the Daz mods have made it clear. Case in point (from another heated AI discussion in the Daz Forum) ...

When this thread started, I was hopeful that we could talk about generative AI in a productive way. It did in the first few posts. Then, somewhere down the line, the views took a moralizing turn, even cynical. Let's keep in mind that everyone's experience of generative AI varies. As such, the truth is up for grabs. If it helps, please re-read that old fable about the Blind Men and the Elephant.

That's all I've got. Stay cool, physically and metaphorically.

    Cheers!

  • Trying not to lose my old freebie development topics

Since the HiveWire3D forums are closing at the end of this month I'm archiving the forum pages I want using the 'Save Page Now' option on the Wayback Macine's web archive homepage. I'm doing this because the Wayback Machine's normal archiving process doesn't always capture everything.

Even archiving each page of each topic I'm interested in using 'Save Page Now' results in the text and inline images being archived successfully, but not any attachments to posts (which matches what it says here, i.e. only the single page is archived).

Anyway, here are the Wayback Machine links for a few of my topics that I don't want to lose:

    • Random colour tiles (Poser 11 FireFly/SuperFly)     ...9 attachments (posts 2,3,4,6,8,9,11,12,13 - all captured), no obvious missing images
    • Minyassa's How do I make a smog layer in the sky with volume?     ...no attachments, no obvious missing images
    • Upping the ante with the Poser atmosphere's Depth Cue (I'm still using Poser 11 with Firefly) - page 1     ...2 attachments (posts 5,13, both captured), no obvious missing images.
      • Upping the ante with the Poser atmosphere's Depth Cue (I'm still using Poser 11 with Firefly) - page 2     ... 2 attachments (posts 21, 37, both captured), no obvious missing images.
    • Poser Firefly Candles  ...no attachments, no obvious missing images
      • Poser  Firefly Candles ? - page 2     ...3 attachments (posts 25 (2) and 31 - all captured), no obvious missing images.
      • Poser Firefly Candles ? - page 3     ...2 attachments (posts 42 and 52 - both captured), no obvious missing images
      • Poser Firefly Candles ? - page 4     ...no attachments, no obvious missing images
    • Towards better grass in Poser...     ... 2 attachments (11, 15 - all captured), images look ok
      • Towards better grass in Poser... - page 2     ... 2 attachments (30,36 - all captured), images look ok
      • Towards better grass in Poser... - page 3     ... no attachments, images look ok
      • Towards better grass in Poser...  - page 4    ... 5 attachments (65, 66 (3), 77 - all captured), images look ok
      • Towards better grass in Poser... - page 5     ... no attachments, images look ok
    • My rather infrequent, and possibly apocryphal, 'books project'.      ...1 attachment (17 - captured), images look ok
      • My rather infrequent, and possibly apocryphal, 'books project'.- page 2     ...  1 attachment (30)  ..
      • My rather infrequent, and possibly apocryphal, 'books project'.- page 3     ... 3 attachments (53,77,60)  .
      • My rather infrequent, and possibly apocryphal, 'books project'.- page 4     ... 3 attachments (65,73,79)   .
      • My rather infrequent, and possibly apocryphal, 'books project'.- page 5     ...9 attachments (85(2),85,91,92,94,95,96,97)
      • My rather infrequent, and possibly apocryphal, 'books project'.- page 6     ... 2 attachments (101(2))   .
      • My rather infrequent, and possibly apocryphal, 'books project'.- page 7     ... 6 attachments (121(2),127(2),136,139,)   .
      • My rather infrequent, and possibly apocryphal, 'books project'.- page 8     ... 16 attachments (142(5),143(4),144(4),149,152,153)   .
      • My rather infrequent, and possibly apocryphal, 'books project'.- page 9     ...13 attachments (164,165(3),166,167,168(2),169,171,172,173,178)    .
    • Favourite openings from books   - ok

    • More Realistic Distance Falloff For Poser Atmosphere Depth Cue   - ok

    • The first four segments of a millipede - not sure if this'll go anywhere :)   -   3 attachments (1,7,18) - ok

    • Callback created using parm.SetUpdateCallback() not behaving as expected - 4 attachments (1,2,3,4) - ok

    • Animatable LED Counters, Clocks, Etc, Using The Material Room -ok

    • Using a greyscale mask to blend two colours... without actually blending. ?! :OS - 3 attachments (8(2),9) -

Edit 1: I initially thought the Wayback Machine was sometimes failing to capture images and/or stylesheets. When I viewed the first four captured pages immediately after capture it often seemed to have missing files, usually images but sometimes the stylesheet. However, opening the captured page several times different images appeared to be missing. A few hours/days later everything seems okay.

Edit 2 (13th): And I've just realized that I can get Wayback Machine to capture each attachment by just using the attachment's URL in the 'Save Page Now'. Once that's done they can be downloaded from the page capture.

probably already mentioned but just noticed my product library section has changed now looks like how wish list section is displayed with product images displayed - I like it makes looking through what I've bought easier to find look up something without trying to guess and a better search too

edit additional just noticed though it only loads up the first 40 products and no next page or anything to view more so that is a downer

  • BJ Shelf (Commercial)

I am extremely happy with this purchase, in fact I had been waiting for such tool already for years!!!

I learnt about the CTRL-Click functionality only here in the forum, thank you so much for bringing this to my attention!

I have a little request for a next version update: working with multiple shelf databases I frequently switch from one to the other. Can't it be made possible to make switching between different databases a little more secure? If I had added items previously and forgot (or was interrupted by real life nonsense :-)) to export the altered database, then next time when I import another database I am at risk losing my latest changes. So, if changing databases becomes a frequently used feature (which I strongly recommend to do) then the import functionality should automatically first update the currently loaded database (remembering the database filename which was last loaded), and only then delete it and replace it with the new desired database?

Thank you so much for developing this most needed tool to finally recover control over my huge asset collection!!!

  • LIVE! In the store NOW!! LowPi - the Low Poly Figure, and Crowd Creator Scripts

I have very successfully used the geoshell wearable method. I hide the LowPi under the geoshell. Have you applied materials to the geoshell? Without materials, a geoshell will be white. I usually reduce the materials from 4K to 1K, because I'm not rendering closeup portraits of these people. I think I discussed this method earlier in this thread, but I don't have time today to go look for that message. Maybe you can search for it. I don't remember how much detail I posted back then.

    Wrong - I didn't use a geoshell. - see below.

  • Vendors and products coming and going

Thank you to all the artists who were willing to give us a heads-up before leaving. If there were no clauses prohibiting artists from issuing departure notices, then it's clear that we didn't pay enough to be considered "customers valued by artists." But couldn't DAZ have given us prior notice? Many game and film platforms give us a heads-up before removing content.

Perhaps many artists don't even frequent this forum, and they won't get answers to their questions in commercial posts. I think there's room for improvement in the communication mechanism. Look at Steam; before I buy a game, I check the reviews. If I see a customer asking a question but not receiving a response from the developer, I simply won't buy it. I've bought many such items here...

I want to say thank you again to the artists who gave me reminders before I left, and even more so to the artists who often provided answers to my questions about the products here. The artists' attitudes largely determine whether I make a purchase and whether I'm willing to pay a higher price within my means.

  • DAZ [Studio] 4.24?

I have an old computer with DAZ 4.21 installed on it. I purchased a new computer, downloaded the DIM, and it installed DAZ 6. That was fine, but I also want to get DAZ 4.24 on the new computer., When I search for DAZ 4, I am told that I already own DAZ 4.X, and there is no way that I can find to download a fresh installation of DAZ 4.24 on my new computer.

Does anyone know how I can get a fresh install of DAZ 4.24?

    Thanks!

Has anyone else seen the "New" tag in the forum category pages have "New" next to them but you go in and nothing is there?

At first I thought maybe something was posted and moved/deleted/otherwise moderated and the New wasn't updated. But now I see after I've finished reading all the new items and go back to the forum list. Refresh doesn't do anything. It only clears with Mark as Read.

  • Hand traced DAZ figures.

    drewradley_57e0c21d58,

Thanks for sharing your work! I understand how much a challenge this can be, and the satisfaction that comes from seeing one's own handiwork.

I also mix 2D with 3D, resorting to hand-drawn line art. As much as possible I rely on the renderer to produce a stylized image that near-2D, then I bring it into an image editor to add extra elements. Generally speaking, manga acts as my visual guide and I've had some success adding flourish to clothes, mainly to emphasize cloth folding and shading.

Update: mmitchell_houston is one fellow who consistently aims for 3D renders along the same hand-drawn style. This page at the 3D Comic Book Tips and Pictures here in the Daz  Forum showcases some good examples of his work.

    Cheers!

DS 6 has a different behavior in terms of manipulating shortcut as well as keyboard navigation in this case ~~

    1) Before pression Shift + K, you have to left-click in Viewport to make Viewport get focused, then press Shift + K. You'll see Keyboard Navigation icon on Toolbar is enabled.
    2) Then before navigating by pressing WASD, you have to do the same. If Viewport lost focuse, e.g. if you click in Scene pane...,  navigation by pressing WASD wouldn't work.

DS 4 has no such behavior, so it's a bug to me in DS 6.

I always turned off keyboard nav in DS4 because I would get camera rotations (E) at random times when I thought the focus was elsewhere, such as the search bar in parameters. If the mouse drifted out of the search bar, the letters typed became navigation. I always considered that a bug.

Me too ~ But I never think it's a bug in DS 4 because  I always think the function of keyboard navigation was specifically designed for the scenario that the user WANT TO navigate in Viewport, e.g in a huge scene ~~

The moment you don't need navigating,  just Shift + K to turn it off ~

Today I learned... Shift-K would have solved two years of headaches. (And yes, I could have clicked the menu item or the toolbar "keyboard". But a shortcut is far less effort than moving the mouse to the toolbar. I just never turned keyboard nav on.)

I will admit, the current solution does have the flaw that you have to click in the viewport as that will either deselect the current node in scene or select a different node.

No, it doesn't load because it's loaded by dsb script which doesn't work anymore in DS 6. You can go to the folder of Aiko 4.cr2, search Aiko 4.dsb, delete it or remove it. Then load Aiko 4 in Content Library.

That would also apply to Girl 4 and Victorial 4 and others that were part of Gen 4. How do I do that?

Right click on the icon in daz studio, and in the popup select "Browse to File folder" and it will open an explorer window in the folder location.
