Wanted: A Jamie Fraser Character and Hair, Jabot, and the Outlander Outfit
Clothes make the man- --or character. And so does the hair. I'm looking for hair that is straight at the roots but curls on the ends, no parts, the bangs can fall down to his eyes. I've seen hair that is too straight and too curly down to the roots and some hair that just looks too stringy. I've tried kilts on him but they don't look right without the jabot. The outfit needs wonderful tartan fabric testures for the Mackenzie clan. I've tried a Face Transfer to get the Jamie Fraser look but i'm failing miserably. I can't seem to do it on my own. I need help from the pros with their artistry and expertise.
looking for GM8 clothing akin to Destiny characterAs far as the skin goes, you probably can't get too close to the pattern, but in terms of the general blue with pattern look, maybe one of these:
https://www.daz3d.com/ozias-hd-for-genesis-8-male (he may be a bit too green, actually)
https://www.daz3d.com/planetary-smuggler-hd-for-genesis-8-male (for the texture more than the morph)
https://www.daz3d.com/nix-8 - for the blue texture option, which can be used without the glows -- although, if you change the color from yellow to white, that might be passably reminiscent, in some ways.
Can't think of anything for the suit offhand. There's this: https://www.daz3d.com/sci-fi-assault-armor-for-genesis-8-males - but it doesn't have the big shoulder things.
This almost has the shoulder bits: https://www.daz3d.com/future-soldier-outfit-for-dain-8-and-genesis-8-males
Similarly, this one has the chest plate, but the shoulder pauldrons are the wrong shape: https://www.daz3d.com/sci-fi-guard-outfit-for-genesis-8-males
Same for this: https://www.daz3d.com/noah-sci-fi-outfit-for-genesis-8-males
And this: https://www.daz3d.com/expansiveapesuit-for-genesis-8-male
And for this one: https://www.daz3d.com/sci-fi-assault-armor-for-genesis-8-males
And this is probably not quite right either: https://www.daz3d.com/omni-suit-for-genesis-8-and-81-male
The only thing I can remember seeing with that kind of shoulder piece is Luthbel's Paladin, which is wrong for what you need in just about every other possible way, and for G2 besides: https://www.daz3d.com/paladin-hd-mmxv-for-genesis-2-males-s

Can you tell me at least where to search? Or what you call it? I know the texturing and modeling part but the projection...or do you just morph it like crazy in Zbrush?
In the early years I did just morph it like crazy in zbrush and then mask and polish and smooth like crazy to try to make the finished product appear less lumpy.
I was very proud of my genesis mouse and ducky at first, but they've got a kinda mishapen quality when compared to my later work.
Eventually I learned about projection, which is important with characters that involve lots of simple smooth shapes. You still have to yank the mesh around a lot first, but you can then project it to the blockout mesh. It gets you past your character looking like a child's playdoh creation a lot quicker.
The difference in outcomes is probably most clearly seen in the difference between my Genesis and Genesis 3 Duckies.

It doesn't look like I held onto the blockout for the teddybear, but I've still got the one from the Toon Axolotl that'll be released someday.
How do you make those crazy characters like JoeQuick? There are custom characters, and then there are (blank-for-genesis#).
1. Make sure you have a modeling app that you are confrotable with. Joe does extreme changes to the SHAPE of the mesh. But morphs like Joe's do not add or subtract vertexes.
2. The primary problem with extreme shape changes is that the rigging/weightmapping/jointcontrolmorphs of genesis-whatever are now out of position.
3. So, after creating, loading, and applying the extreme morph, much time needs to be spent on adjusting the rigging to shape, adjusting weightmaps, and perhaps replacing a few JCMs.
* I have dabbled. I like puppets and claymation visuals. Sometimes, in these styles human hands only have three fingers and a thumb.
You can see some steps starting at this post and continuing for a few more comments. https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/4047206/#Comment_4047206
Storytelling Feedback for It's Raining Men Contest 2020 (Updated May 30)@denavin, of course, my feedback is meant to be taken simply as suggestions :). I still think it's worth it to explore creating leading lines with the plane to transfer the focus from an establishing shot (where we see their precarious situation) to an emotional one (where the relationship between the characters is at the heart of the frame). But that can be taken as a continuation of the story (second frame) while leaving the establishing frame first.
Also, while I gave some dramatic examples of where to take the lighting, even just upping the warmth a little bit can help. Sort of like they did with Uncharted 3 (your image really reminded me of that game). What I want to show is in the 16-minute mark onward, where the cinematic takes place:
Here's a quick reference of what I mean. This is your render with warm filters:

Comparison:

Although mind you, in the end, it's still personal preference and whatever achieves your vision is the best way to go about it :).
As to the International Women's Day Competition... I'm actually disappointed. I didn't participate, but I saw two really strong entries with very good concepts in the gallery, so I had a ton of expectations as to who would win. The winning entries are indeed quite beautiful, but they lack concept and that's where I would've disagreed with the judges. I think they should've put more weight (points) towards the concept and less on the execution to reward the unique entries, like this one from Hypertaf and this one from Isikol.

@Lonesome Cowboy: Is this image one of your creations: Computers are sneaky and mean? Also, what is TOF? Is this an artist like Frank Frazetta or Boris Vallejo?
yes it is one of mine and it is also in my gallery. https://www.daz3d.com/gallery/user/4732842999283712#gallery=newest&page=1
TOF = Tom of Finnland
Boris Vallejo and Frank Frazetta have been one of the first ones that inspired me to do graphic works.
"Computers are sneaky and mean" is a bad translation for "Computer sind hinterhältig und gemein" i did with google translate and it is a sentence of experiences of my life as a php coder and MS-DOS and windows-fighter and so on ;-)

Thanks for your input. We actually are in the process of adding a new dialog to all the bridges. It's based on the Unreal one with some small changes. It's actually already supported in the new blender update.

We built it in a way that it can be shared for all the bridges in time it will be ported to the other bridges as well.

Making the G8 base expressions (and any expressions that are using them) work on G8.1 requires DS 4.15 and removal of dummy/placeholder expressions that are installed to G8.1 morph folders - These dummy/placeholder expression files have no other function than to prevent the base G8 expressions from loading.
The dummy/placeholder files are located in; (if installed with DIM or manually)

And nearly three months later this weirdness still hasn't been addressed by Daz.
I can't see the installers removing anything from the customers computer (unless the customer tells them to do that), they can only replace what's already there and as long as the "Genesis 8 Starter Essentials" has these files, they will need to be removed manually.
Diffeomorphic Issue? (Daz custom morphs look different in blender cycles)I basically took enough time to highly customize my daz charachter using morph dials to change everything about the face and Iray captures these changes really well. but my workflow typically involves doing final render with cycles.
Anyway, I used the diffeomorphic plugin to import the scene (both principled and BDSF) to see if anything changed and even with the same lighting setup my daz character's face looks very different in Blender.. everything else looks identical to iray (hair, skin etc) its just the eyes, cheekbones, and lips are not giving the same results from daz and I need to know if i'm missing some extra steps other than just importing through diffeomorphic.. its like one of those "reality vs expectations" and its annoying lol. no i'm not uploading the photos this is a secret project i'm working on just know the 2 faces from each program do not look exactly the same.
Thanks for any help!
Broken HairYou can use a Character preset (sahpe and materials). You can also create a single slider without the issues from baking to an OBJ if you set your character up, maske sure everything else is zeroed (no expressions, poses, or other shapes) and then:
- right-click in Parameters to turn on Edit Mode (if it isn't)
- right-click in the property group you want to place your new slider in>Create New Property.
- give the property a name, adjust limits if needed (e.g. you might want to set the minimum value to 0), click Accept.
- Set the new property to 100%
- right-click on the new sldier>ERC Freeze
- make sure the sub-components are the things thata re needed for your shape and nothing else - deselect any interlopers
- click Accept
- test to be sure it works
- set the value to 0
- File>Save AsSupport Assets>Morph Asset to save for future use (if you want it to be available on loading nay instance of the base figure - otherwise just ave a scene, Scene Subset, or Character preset)
This keeps the original morphs, so you don't have to redo any corrections, but allows you to vary how strongly you apply the character (which is tricky using just a preset to set values) - the best of both worlds.

I've been trying to figure out what the "Eye Look Automatic" switch does...?

phantastic what you did!!!
could you please post or send me the morphing-/shaping-preset? I think i own most of the morphs you are using here.
Otherwise you can contact me on https://www.deviantart.com/catweazle01 as Catweazle01.

Thank you so much, Lonesome Cowboy!
Your comment on one of my gallery images is what inspired me to tweak that figure to look more like Sergey. My version bears some resemblence to him, but could likely be improved to get a better likeness with some additional dial spinning.
I wasn't sure how to create a shape preset that would work since I save all my custom-dialed characters as Scene Subsets (so I can simply merge them into an existing scene.)
There are a lot of additional morphs working in the background beyond the main donor characters. It's possible that you could substitute similar morphs from different products to achieve the same final look (or close enought to it.)
The main products are: G8M, Armand, Yuji (from the other marketplace), G8M Body Morphs, G8M Head Morphs, Auto Muscle Enhancer/Auto Shape Enhancer, Muscularity Morphs for G8M, The Brute, Maxx, Cartoonized for G8M, Body Morph Kit for G8M, Dain, Leyna (one nipple morph to "plump them up a tiny bit - not needed as I don't think leaving it out would be that noticeable), and one morph from SIckleYield's free morph pack (it rounds the eyes, so another morph(s) might fill in for this one.) I *think* those are the required products for my version of Sergey. At least what I can tell by looking at the Currently Used list in the Parameters pane. Some of the products might only use some HD Details for things like veins/skin detail and adding some muscularity detail.
Anyway, I've saved a Sergey Shape Preset that appears to work on my other Mac by applying it to the base G8M figure. Oh, and before I forget, I almost always render at SubD Level 3, though Sergey looks good at even a SubD Level 1, just a lot softer physique as one would expect. SubD Level 2 looks very close to SubD 3 at smaller render sizes or when not doing close up work. When I tested the Preset, I loaded the G8M base and then with G8M selected, I drag and dropped the Preset file onto G8M in the Viewport window and let DAZ Studio do its thing to apply it. Then I could save out the Sergey-fied version of G8M as a new Scene Subset figure, ready to load/merge into a scene.
Here's the thing, I don't know if this new forum software has the ability to upload and attach a Preset file or not. I don't share files via file hosting services unless it's with family, nor do I email files to non-family members. My privacy/online security is rather important to me, such as it is. LOL! Also, I was a software developer who wrote free software as a hobby in the 1990s and later created a few Poser freebies. I was turned off on giving stuff away after having the majority of folks who used them do what I call "Hit and Run" where they asked for something, I worked on it, sent it, and never heard from them again. That happened a lot. If I were to share this file, or any other presets in the future, it would be here, where anyone interested could access it/them. Assuming that DAZ allows file uploads in the forums. The exception is for friends that I communicate with regularly. :) I know this sounds mean-spirited, but I need to protect myself these days. I've given so much away over the last 30 years it would be nice to feel like my work was appreciated. :) Side note/fun fact: Apple executives in the mid-1990s did email me from time to time regarding my Newton apps and asked me to do a special version for Steve Jobs. They were quite thankful and loved all the apps I created for the platform. They said the Newton team always got a kick out of seeing the newest thing I came up with (mostly multimedia related.) So there's that bright spot! LOL!
If anyone's still interested in this ShapePreset, please do let me know about using the forum to upload it. :)
Lee
Sergey Preset on G8M Base on left, G8M Base on right. Apologies for stating the obvious!! :)

Ok ... i see that here is a problem.
I own all ingredients you are using on the figure, but this not useful when i don' t know the exact values.
It's like when you want to bake a cake and get all the ingredients on the table, but you don't have a baking book where it says how much flour and how many eggs you have to use.Even when you are using the Dial-Control-Tool, it would be too much work to write the values down manually, especially when you use the morphs from SimonWM or SY.
I for myself have no problem to share presets with other people:
a) either i load them up to sharecg or deviantart or
b) i load them up on my server and give the persons i want to sent them the link. I do this always when i am creating images for people who give me an order. So i can discuss the results with them without problems.
Files as zip and jpg as jpg or zipIn the old version of the gallery it was possible to uplad duf-files, when they were not too large.
Unfortunately I didn't detect such a possibility in the newer version yet.
So let us think about how we can exchange the shaping presets each other.
I think i have some interesing ones for you too.Broken HairNot sure if it's what is causng the problem, but creating a single morph combining several others by exporting the result as obj and importing it as a single morph is not a good idea as it will break links to corrective or adjustment morphs.
For example if there is a corrective morph or adjustment morph triggered by morph A then it will be applied automatically when using a combination of morph A and B. But if you create morph C by exporting the result of A and B as obj and importing it as a new morph then it will be seen as a totally different morph which is not linked to the corrective or adjustment morphs linked to morph A.
So if you used a shape for which there was a custom fit morph in your hair as part of the character, the custom morph would be used when you were using the combination of smaller morphs, but not when using your new combined morph.
Broken HairHello, I have just made a single morph combining a bunch of smaller morphs (including my own from blender) i done on Victoria 8.1 HD. Removed all extras from body, zero everything, base mesh export as obj, morph loader pro, save morph, adjust rigging, freeze erc and then loaded on to a gen 8.1. I'm now getting issues when i use Marigold Hair from OOT. It sits fine but if i use any sliders or try and move bones then the hair stretches in weird ways. Is there something in the morph process that could cause this? I tried a different hair style and it was fine so i thought it might be because i was using Marigold on the old model, but i had deleted it when making the morph. Is it something to do with the erc freeze?
Thanks for now.
Luminance Map ? Create HDR from 6 cubemap imagesHi,
Currently I have some very high quality cubemap (basically 6 images form a cube around the camera) and I want to convert it to HDRI to use in render. The cubemap images are in TIFF 32 BIT HDR format. Now from what I know, I need to transfer the "light" information to the HDRI.
So I do the following things:
1. I create 6 planes in DAZ to form a cube, put a camera in the middle
2. I apply Daz Uber Emissive Material to the planes, and load the cubemap images as Base Color map, Emission Color Map, set these color as white
Now I know that the color of the light from the cubemap images will be correct, how about the strength of the light, or the luminance ? Can I also load the cubemap image as luminance map? What kind of image should I load to the luminance map?
My final goal is that I want to make sure the final HDRI can have all the lighting information like the cubemap HDR 32 bit TIFF image, including the high dynamic range of light.
Thank you very much
Please don't giggle - convert V3 accessories to Genesis ??I have converted V3 hair to G8F. It's not brilliant, but it worked. This is how I did it with Jim Burton's now unavailable Las Vegas Hair. On the left is the original fitted to Jim Burton's Glamorous Vickie 3, on the right is a G8F character (FWSA McKayla).
The process was long winded,
- In Daz Studio in a blank scene, load the V3 hair and export the hair in the zeroed configuration as an OBJ file.
- In Daz Studio in a blank scene, load the G8F Basics Toulouse Hair and export the hair in the zeroed configuration as an OBJ file.
- In a modeller (I used one I wrote for myself over the last 16 years) load the Toulouse Hair obj file.
- Delete everything that isn't the scalp.
- Save this, you will need it many many times.
- Import the V3 hair obj file into the scalp model. Move the hair facets until they look right relative to the scalp. MAKE A NOTE OF THIS TRANSLATION, you will need this many many times.
- Save the Hair zero pose models as an obj file.
- These next steps are the ones I keep forgetting exactly how to do, so please forgive me if I don't get it right, and can someone correct me. In Daz Studio import the hair obj file.
- Open a G8F character.
- Fit the Hair to the G8F Character, and specify the hair as hair, length as appropriate. Original figure: None.
- Now the rigging is transferred over to the hair. Save the duf file for safety.
- In Daz Studio in a blank scene, load the V3 hair, set one hair morph to 100% and all other morphs to 0% and export the hair morph as an OBJ file.
- In a modeller, load the Toulouse Hair scalp and import the morphed hair file. Translate the hair facets by the distance you noted in 6) above.
- Save the morphed hair model as an obj file with the morph name.
- In Daz Studio, Open the new G8F hair.
- Select the hair, and using Morph Transfer Advanced (the simpler one that works with one file) import the morph and leave the morph name as the default name (if you have saved the obj file as the morph name). This will then lead to a slider with that morph that can be dialled into the hair. Set limits as appropriate.
- Save the duf file for safety.
- Repeat from 12) for every morph in the V3 hair. Obviously exporting the 100% morphs as different files one after the other from DS would be quicker.
It takes time, but I have now got the V3 Las Vegas hair to work with G8F with all morphs active. If the hair already has a skull cap, only use the Toulouse hair as a way to locate the hair for G8's head in 6), delete before saving the hair in 7) and don't bother with loading it again in 13).
Regards,
Richard
