Connect also updated the metadata for the product to look for it in the Connect Library, which is in a totally different location, with a totally different folder setup.Which why you are seeing the "can't find it" icons for everything in that product that uses the database driven view(Smart).

Connect doesn't play well with others. So you will need to decide which install method you want to use.

I suggest DIM and never login inside DS again to protect the metadata/database from this type of install salad. :)

edit:manual install/DIM/Central + never login inside DS again works for Daz Store content also.

Content downloaded/bought at a different store most likely won't have any metadata included with it, nor would the Daz store have any metatdata for it, so there wouldn't be any to mess up.

However, if I drop it in about the right place it does dock correctly.

Can you try to clarify what "the right place" is? Ah! If my cursor is in that little dead-space between the left group and the center group, and just below the actual panes when I release, it works! Btw, if your cursor is in the right-hand half of the central group, you should see the highlight line, at least for the center group. Krikey, it's like trying to pick up a kids' carnival toy in one of those claw machines!

Hmm, sorry if I'm seeming dense, but everything in the Smart Content tab under "Products", under all categories shows black&white icons which I assume to mean it is not installed. Everything I click has an "Install" option but no "Uninstall". The only Starter Essentials I see even listed there is "dForce Starter Essentials" which is not the content I keep getting the error message about. Under "Files" there are some icons in color that look like they might be installed, but even those don't show any uninstall or delete option in the right-click menu.

Are you saying that there's a separate content library pathway for Connect? That's weird. I assumed they all installed in the same place but that there was conflicting database info. Where do I even go to find and delete that? Or do I log back in and uninstall it somehow in the Smart Content tab? I'm completely ignorant of anything "Connect" related.

Well, I will just say what I encountered.

I have bought a model. I loaded the model and blended the face and body shape a bit with an other model and then saved it as a character. I have uninstalled the model using Daz Central and asked for a refund. I now loaded the saved character and all the face definitions of the character I refunded are still there in the face shape.

I haven't tried to save a model unedited and then refunding it, but that might save the face shape as well.

You may have had the model installed with an installer AND within DS, those installations are separate and need to be uninstalled separately as well.

  • Draw Dome is missing in Daz3d 4.20?

I have been working with Daz3d version 4.15 - all is/was well. I recently got a 3080 rig and version 4.20 was installed on it (i did not see any choice in the matter - was using  Daz Central). When i launched it, it was a mess. First off i got PostGRE SQL warning - (this has not been resolved). When i tried to load a scene, I found the the Environment section gone. Fine, it has been moved to a new tab. But i was not able to find where Draw Dome has gone! Furthermore, scenes that i know are fine on my old rig running version 4.15, cannot even preview on iray. All the excitement of running Daz3d on a 3080 has more or less fizzled out now. I really don't  have time to spend chasing down missing stuff. Does anyone else out there have this missing Draw Dome issue? It's not just Draw Dome mind, it is the whole list associated with Enviroment Mode, etc, Also, can anyone point me in the direction of the installation file for version 1.5?

  • Oh, Misty, I forgot my Complaint Thread

Ha, I can beat that!  I'm so old... (chorus: How old are you?) I'm so old that the phone in our house had just a four digit number under the central plastic, typed, and only numbers, no letters until I was 12 in 1960 when DDD (Direct Distance Dialing) was introduced and we got our area code & 7-digit number.  Our village only had a population of about 500 for it and the farms around us, so a 4-digit number was more than enough for the little 10x10 foot brick AT&T switching building in town.  Although, I can't remember how we called the nearest city,  perhaps an extra digit or two on the front?  Although, I do remember that you had to dial "0" to get the Operator if you wanted to talk to any place more than about 30 miles away.surprise  But as a kid, I never made phone calls to outside of town, just dial 4-digits and talk to your friends.  Wheee...yes  And you knew the numbers in your head, and the phonebook YellowPages were your friend if you needed services or products.  "YellowPages":  The Google of the 20th century"smiley

Now, if someone can delight us with stories of the wooden phone on the kitchen wall with a crank instead of a dial, I'll relinquish my phone story crown.smiley

  • Question about daz central file management

Do you mean Daz Central (separate installer, a simplifed version of Install Manager) or Daz Connect (installing through Daz Studfio itself)? It sounds like the latter, in which case when you go online it downloads your current product library details and palces the files in /data/cloud/meta/ in the Daz Connect Data Directory.

Nope... Close though... it's actually the top right one... I told you it was a creepy doll...

The one on the bottom left is actually a North Atlantic Dollleg Fish (Dolllegus Plasticus) which are quite common throughout the Atlantic all the way up to central Nebraska.

In September they come ashore to mate and hop around on their shoe-like fins.. but mostly be eaten by giant walking tree clams, which is why they are an endangered species.

  • Installation Managers

As I understand it, the problem isn't necessarily just with installing files more than one way so much as it's installing THE SAME files more than one way, and that is still a problem. It's best to stick to one method, and that method should probably not be installing them within DS (Connect) because some products can't install properly through Connect. DIM is advisable over Central, but if you're going to use Central, use only that.

  • Installation Managers

Daz Studio currently has three installation managers: Daz Install Manager, Daz Central, and the Daz Studio program that prompts you when you have missing files from a scene you are loading.

I just bought a new computer, and have years of content and scenes.  A few years ago when I installed using DIM, and the software itself, it caused problems with my content and scene loading. Upon reporting this to Daz, they said that if you use Daz Install Manager (DIM) to install some files, and then install other files from the software itself, it will create duplicate files and cause permanent errors in your scenes. So I had to wipe my drive.

Now that I am re-installing everything, it would be nice to know if that is fixed.

As I am reloading old scenes, Daz is prompting me about missing files. Manually searching for them on Daz Central has been time conduming, but I am quite scared of installing them from the Daz Studio software given this was a major bug a few years ago. Can anyone shed some light on this?

  • Install Content to Different Drive

Your instructions are perfect. I have tested one character asset because I have to go to work, and it is working now, Studio on C:, assets going to F:. You are currently my favorite human. The steps I was missing seem to have been changing the content path shortcuts in DIM and, not that it makes a huge difference, changing where the zip archive was located.

Now the long process of reinstalling all the assets begins. For what it's worth, if anyone else happens across this post, I saw in the Daz Central settings that it just uses the DIM settings, so I can reinstall everything through Central just fine. I'll do that because DIM kinda scares me still, I don't want to break Daz anymore. I've had enough of that. You CAN change the paths in Central, but I wouldn't recommend that since Gordig's instructions worked so nicely and Central uses DIM paths anyway.

Again, Gordig, you are my hero. Thanks a million!

  • Is Daz Central stable now?

I downloaded [Daz Central] it when it first came out and it screwed everything up for me. Can't remember what it was, but I recently changed computers and installed DS from scratch. I didn't want to install DC because of my experience so I have Daz install manager. But I've always found DIM to be confusing so I'm wondering if it's safe for me to switch to DC?

  • Install Content to Different Drive

It should be fine to install DS itself to your C drive, because the program doesn't take up that much space; it's the content you need to worry about. Installing Daz Central onto a different drive won't help unless you change the download and install paths within Central, which I don't know how to do as I don't use Central. I BELIEVE it's possible, but it might not be, because Central is intended to be easier to use for beginners. I'd recommend you ditch Central and use Daz Install Manager (DIM) instead.

Inside DIM, click on the cog icon at the top right and select Advanced Settings.

In the Downloads tab, set the Package Archive to whatever folder you want installer zips to download.

Then, in the Installation tab, create a new profile by clicking the plus button at the bottom left, and set that to wherever you want your content to live, then set Content Path Shortcuts to your new profile instead of the default. If you install DS into a non-default location, you'll want to change the Software Base locations for whichever version(s) of the software you use.

If you use Daz content in any other programs, like Hexagon, Blender, Maya, etc., you'll want to click over to the Applications tab and add each program in, setting the path to wherever the actual application is.

Press Accept, and now you're set to start downloading and installing content.

Inside DS, go to Edit -> Preferences, click on the Content tab, and click the Content Directory Manager. From here you either

    1) Select Daz Studio Formats, click the Add button, and point it to where your content is/will be OR

    2) Expand Daz Studio Formats, select one of the entries (I believe there are two by default), click Edit, and replace the current directory with the actual location of your assets.

  • Install Content to Different Drive

Ok, this is a long one.

I didn't pay attention when installing Daz, so all the assets were going to my boot drive. This is not good, because it's not very big.

Using forums here and elsewhere, I attempted to point Daz at a new asset folder, but that didn't work. I would try to redownload, and Daz would recreate the asset folder on the C: drive. I tried manually moving assets to the F: drive, thinking that, since Daz was pointed there, it would work. It didn't.

https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/224286/installing-daz-studio-on-a-secondary-drive is the forum I kept going back to, since those people seemed the most knowledgeable, however there is no location tab in my folder properties (any of them) and the post is from 2018, so Win10 has probably changed quite a bit since then. Ergo, that post is sadly useless to me.

In my frustration, I deleted everything I could find related to Daz on my PC and reinstalled. Unfortunately, it didn't revert my faulty custom file paths to default as I hoped that drastic measure would accomplish, so in the end I wound up in the exact same boat as before.

Best result I achieved with assets on preferred F: drive? Daz recognized the assets, but they didn't work. I would make a Michael 8, and he would “load”, but it would be a default gen 8 male, albeit taller. All characters, male or female, same result: default gen 8s of varying heights and weird textures. I got frustrated and deleted everything again (except my saves which are backed up anyway).

I have now installed Daz Central onto my preferred F: drive. When I launched it, it created Daz folders in the following places:

C: Daz 3D, which is empty.

C: Users/me/appdata/roaming/DAZ 3D, which has folders called cms and InstallManager.

This PC/Documents/DAZ 3D, which has a folder called Hexagon. If Central made other Daz folders, I haven't found them.

I have not reinstalled studio yet. I don't particularly care if Studio installs to the C: drive, since there is plenty of room without the assets, but I would prefer it on the F: drive. Except Central, as far as I can tell, doesn't let me pick a file path.

I am not computer savvy at all with this sort of thing. If anyone can help me figure out how to install Studio to the F: drive, and then why Daz is seemingly outright refusing to download assets where I want them, even though I had told DIM and Content Directory Manager where to install and find them, I would be super appreciative. Also, if necessary, how to revert the file paths to default first, assuming they are still in whatever messed up order I had attempted like the last time I reinstalled Studio. And feel free to use small, easy to understand words, because I am clearly in need of beginner guides. Also, I use Daz Central for all my downloads because that's how I learned. I would like to keep it that way, but if I must adapt then I must adapt.

Oddly enough, my one Renderosity asset works just fine, but wings with no people are kind of pointless.

And finally, I work weird hours and too much overtime, so it might take me a day or so to see any replies to this. But I will see them, because I am done trying to figure this out by myself, it's been three weeks and I must create. Thanks in advance!
