New Barbie

I heard on the news today that Matel announced that they’re releasing some new Barbies. Beside their standard Barbie there will now be a short Barbie, a tall Barbie, and curvy Barbie. My wife pointed out that for each different Barbie, you’d have to buy different sized outfits. Sounds familiar. There’s nothing to the rumor that Matel will be changing the name from Barbie to Vickie. (BTW no new Ken has been announced)

This should be fun from a commerce point of view; you buy someone the doll and then search around for garments that fit the doll...  it makes you appreciate autofit.

Let's face it. What we all do is simply an adult version of dressing up dolls and taking pictures of them. Albeit with expensive dolls, wardrobes and environments. We're just adults playing with dolls and calling it art. Nothing wrong with that mind you. cheeky

partially right....except when you do it for a living. It is less "play" more "work" but often "enjoy"

isn't that what all compositional artists do then?

No...I take them apart, put them together again, build them things to use and figure out how to turn them funky colors...the 'playing' I do is 'testing' and experimentation.

Is that DAZ soon?  If so, Ken fans should come back in 18 months or so.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

I admit I wonder if the new barbies will have their on clothing line?

    Greetings,

As a side-note, my wife is campaigning HARD to get a 'Game Developer Barbie' when it comes out later this year. ;)

I wonder if it comes with an indy license...

Unless there is a short, pudgy, balding version of Ken I won't be impressed.

Disclaimer: My wife is a Barbie collector, so I know more about Barbie than any normal grown man ever should

Sales of Barbie dolls have been declining ever since Mattel changed to their "more realistic" Barbie figure. The "new" Barbie shape was the result of continued pressure from certain vocal groups that her proportions were unrealistic, unachievable, and therefor detrimental to little girls self esteems. Unfortunately, her new more "realistic" figure seems to be much less popular with little girls (actually, not just little girls, my wife refuses to buy them). I would guess this is simply an attempt by Mattel to rejuvinate Barbie sales. Unfortunately I think it will be another fail. My guess is the popularity of the original Barbie figure was because she wasn't average (is this begining to sound similar to many discussions here??).

Anyway, it will be interesting to see what the popularity of the new shapes will be. I already know that I'm off the hook for buying any of the new shapes .... or more accurately, I better not buy any of them for my wife, or I'll be in the dog house. Unfortunately that means the vintage and Silkstone Barbies, which are more expensive, will remain at the top of her wish list.

I suspect that Barbie's sales also declined a bit because a lot of modern girls do rely on playing with toys defined as girl's toys.  The doll also was stuck in a no girl's zone of a bit too retro to be realistic and not stylized enough to be aspirational. I think GI Joe got stuck in that same bind.

New Barbie has NO Poser support .... Mattel will probably blame Smith Micro.

    lol

Smith Micro will no doubt point the finger at Mattel, meanwhile, DAZ will develop an encrypted version that can't be used with any other Mattel toys.

    "Project Dawn" ? wink

I realise this is probably just semantics, but if you have this huge new range of varying dolls, can you still call them Barbie? It feels wrong to me. I don't know much about Barbie but a lot of Lego is like that these days too (doesn't remotely look like standard Lego) and I am so disapprove v.v

I'd imagine the fact that she isn't an iPhone also hampers her sales these days.

So THAT's why they don't come with Anatomical Elements! It's all about the Barbie takeover future.

I am sure there is a REAL DOLL company in Japan that could make ones with those too, lifesized

Even as a child, I thought the Barbies were ugly as sin and the first thing I did to every one I was given was shear their hair off.  No Barbie was safe from my scissors.

I'm picturing the evil kid from toy story.

I hold no illusions. When someone asks me what I'm doing, I will say "playing with my barbies". My mom will regularly ask me how my barbies are doing, referring to if i've put any up for sale lately LOL. I'm 33, its no big deal.

One thing that our DAZ/Poser experience tells us is that Mattel will _have_ to make all new clothings with fits for the different character shapes.  Fortunately, present production methods make this very easy; but shelf space (for people who still buy things in physical stores) may be a problem.
