was excited a minute. old thread lol
i sold ny barbie of the nile doll, was offered a 100 bux for her. never thouhgt i'd regret it so bad. miss her.
I tried Facegen on a 3D animated character from some show once. It didn't go well...
Not sure if Barbie would go well either. Not sure if anyone has tried doing that. I'm sure there's some good face shots of Barbie at least, with all the promo and such that Barbie gets.
I did pick up Bestie when she was introduced and on sale, mainly for other things in that sale, so I have my Skipper lookalike apparently.
Not a 100% match, but I have face morphs for that to fine tune things if I feel the need!
The intent of Bestie is obvious, but, wow, that's a face you see behind an oncoming kitchen knife!
Their new doll shape is interesting.
The idea of a more customizable doll is smart on their part. I don't know if it will work like they think it should, but that might stray outside the bounds of discussion here.
The more androgynous look is the right shape for pre/early-Tween figures.
No dating at that age, so all those questions can be saved for Barbie and Ken, I think.
I really do like the blonde one with the shaved sides & lightning bolts carved into the shaved part. It pings a certain "radar".
(She also comes with a wig... boooooo.)
I would get one of those for my desk at work.
I've always liked barbie. I remember how excited we were when Mexican barbie was released, because hitherto my sister and I had no dark-haired barbies, except my black barbie. My sister of course got to play wtih her.
My ken was luke skywalker, but I ruined him, by using the barbie that made kiss marks, and had her kiss his cheek. For some reason this kiss thing stained Luke's face.
In the 80's dolls with hair for men came out, and I even had a hairband ken.
I love barbies.
...but where's the love for GI Joe and Stretch Armstrong?
I still have Cheerleader Barbie who poses in a martini glass lol
I remember Barbie, PJ, Ken, and I think a girl named Skippy from my sister & her friends. They were play acting with those dolls and they were perfectly well behaved and mature, unless me & my friend got ahold of the and they'd become uncouth. The advertisements for those gave me the 1st concept I had of that 'California beach' lifestyle instead of the freezing cold and blustering hot midwest that was the only place we'd ever been at that age.
I remember in the late 60s / early 70s my older brother's G.I. Joes dolls had "real" hair & (sometimes beards &/or mustaches (not sure why as US military as far as I know was no facial hair allowed). It was pretty real like buzz cut/flat top style hair. Watching them play army was how I learned to destroy the nice toy cars our nice neighbor kept giving me.
just imagine all the little girls wanting the new DAZ STUDIO Ken doll anatomicaly correct. That would be a real shocker for them.......once they unwrap him, or how about the anatomicaly correct barbie...... That would be totaly unerving I am sure...... My wife is also a collector of the Barbie.... My god she still has her origional doll and wardrobe.... Complete with hangers and all sorts of strange things.
I think it's time to try Face Transfer with a Barbie Doll - easy to control the lighting situation to get good texture and clear geometry
I loved Barbie too.. I used to create tents for her with coat hangers and boats with plastic bottles and let her be outdoors barbie.. we would send her down the street when it rained in her plastic boat...wow I haven't thought about that in years
Neither of my daughters had Barbie. My youngest had lots of 'My little Pony' while my eldest had a dozen Action Men and one Sindy. The Sindy was always the Damsel in distress who was rescued just too late, with fatal consequences. The number of times her Sindy was beheaded, hung, shot or pushed off a cliff doesn't bear recalling. Eventually the head joint became so loose the head wouldn't stay on and got lost when a cat played with it. So Sindy moved to an Action Man body recovery role. Both daughters now love Warhammer...
Were there characters with beards other than Shipwreck? The Navy was the last to ban beards, back in 1984, so Shipwreck actually would have been within regs at the time. I think the main reason ground forces banned beards was because they disrupt the seal of a gas mask, which is not as much an issue for sailors.
Regardless, none of the services ban facial hair entirely; moustaches are allowed as long as they don't reach beyond the edges of the mouth, or grow beyond the top of the lip. Also, African skin often reacts poorly to close shaves, so on a case-by-case basis, black men are allowed to keep beards trimmed short.
I think NoneSuch00 is remembering the "non military" Joes with "flocking" to simulate hair and beards.

With Vietnam being such a "hot point" in the early 70s, the makers of G.I. Joe decided to steer away from outright military themes and instead depict him as a civilian adventurer. A fair number of costumes could be reused, like khakis for a desert environment, except now Joe was digging up mummies. He was also presented as a jumgle explorer, a scuba or a deep sea diver (I had those two aquatic sets) and they usually included an animal accessory like an undersized gorilla, a shark or an octopus. Sonce Joe was now a civvie, having him sport a rugged beard was okay. When the 80s rolled around and the military was once again seen in a more favorable light, the brand was ressurected, except this time with "near future" weapons and the line was scaled down from 1/6 to 1/18 to match Kenner's Star Wars line.
Sincerely,
Bill
Totally playing virtual Barbie. Prior to rendering I had high end Tonner dolls, had cutom outfits made. I used to PS create sexy sci fi. Then in 09 I found DS.. @ least now they have expressions..
Nice pictures. They remind me of "Stingray" and Joe 90 and all of that stuff - I still like some of the music.
I have read some G.I. Joe histories and there are "field guide" type cataloguing efforts in print. My understanding is that the manufacturer found it a bit of a tough row to hoe after a while, but anyway I thought the beards were for POWs or people who'd been living rough after being MIA... also returning astronauts (like from Apollo) had a bit of stubble.
I didn't like the trend to the smaller G.I. Joe; to me the larger 18 inch figure category seems more interesting. These days the action figures category is pretty broad: Hallmark made licensed Elvis and Marilyn Monroe figures for instance; and I've seen an 18 inch John Lennon doll.
I posted a tidbit about this earlier this year (eg. small, detailed figures) but it got deleted. Essentially what I was saying is that 3D print is getting pretty slick in the research labs, and that's "additive" technology. The corollary to this maybe be using laser light to burn away photosensitive material, and from there sculpt things. See attached screenshot of Dracula's castle or whatever.
Skipper, with bendable legs. The actor who played "Marcia" on The Brady Bunch was in the commercials in some markets. "She's real like me!"
I haven't looked at "Bestie" but the greater fluidity if you will, compared to Skipper, is pretty interesting.
A recent newspaper item touched on some of the business and creative aspects of the Barbie product line -

Tonners are 16" fireball xl5 with this guy
...
HA HA! I inadvertantly created a Barbie figure in a render - it was SO NOT what I was after when I set out, but it sure was what I got! I present, Princess Barbinku!

...pretty good.
Yes, thanks.
I remember that was one of the G.I. Joe characters they had. I had forgotten about some of the joints though. Those dolls were indestructible, I know I tried. One thing I didn't notice though back then, and I guess being a toddler it's not surprising I didn't notice, was that G.I. Joe in the video you linked to is actually a pretty good likeness of John F Kennedy.
I also remember those little green soldiers they had. I had Barrel of Monkeys though if you've ever seen those. And those Round Peeple characters that became popular again in the last 10 years.
Interesting thanks. It's funny to remember them playing with those dolls. They had lots of fun.
Indeed there are some advantages using real puppets instead of 3d actors. That is, you don't have to simulate phisics or photorealistic rendering. And you may also have "real-time animation" from the puppetter performance.
In my free time I use to work for a theater group where we perform in the local theater. I mean as real actors. Most of the times we make the costumes and scenes by ourselves, and we also setup the theater lights for the play.
It is fun and it also has a lot in common with 3d animation.
still waiting for the daz he-man outfit.
From something I read a while back I believe the hair and beards were added to Action Man, the UK version, and then back-adopted for the US GI Joe - or maybe that was the gripping hands. Perhaps beards were less of an issue with the UK armed forces.
I remember why I 1st frequented this site when asking for a lot of tips in the early days. Someone shared a story where he showed his GF @ the time what he was doing. She said "so your basically playing with dolls" and broke up with him. My wife never cared.
I used to steal my sisters Barbie dolls and give them "bald haircuts" thinking it would improve their looks... it did not... once I even talked her into doing that and she cried even harder. No wonder she hated me! LOL
Again, another reason why I like this new Creatable World doll (not the Barbie line, but Mattel). I think it looks cool.
When I was a kid, back in the 60's, G.I. Joe was big and was patterned after a Marine mine even had dress blues but there was a slue of clothes and gear. Over the years they shrunk G.I. Joe down and didn't have all the cool gear. Then there was the anniversary joes that came out and they were back to the original size as they were in the 60's and 70's. I remember the versions that came out with hair and beards aslo with Kung Fu gripe.
My Joes used to kick Ken's butt then took off with Barbie and hung out her pad. I've always wondered how Barbie had all that stuff cars, campers, clothes, houses, etc? She wasn't married or had a job so did she have a sugar daddy or was she a high priced....well I ain't going there LOL!
