Interesting Upgrade For Images

If Daz decides to support this it might help with images sizes for textures.

it would break it for many other apps people export to though

Blender will probably add support but people using other older software wouldn't be happy

like me with Carrara, but probably less of an issue because I end up manually loading most maps anyway so converting them only one more step

And it wont help with renders, as images there are uncompressed, or compressed with Nvidias own system.

I thought this was the whole point of the .web format. And are jpg files really that bad?

  • Standards are good. Let's have more of them. Pfft. Regards, Richard.

The only thing it would optimize is download size, as when you render, the images has to be expanded into bitmaps to be used in a render engine. A render engine does not, AFAIK, pick texture points from a compressed image, when raycasting,

When everything is standard - nothing is standard. ( can't remember where that came from ).

I'm sure they'll get around to after doing WEBP.

Yeah Id rather have WebP, the only things I know that support JP2 are converters/viewers like Irfanview & XNView. AFAIK not even GIMP(stupid name for an image editor) or any of the other FLOSS graphics software support it yet. WebP is relatively widely supported, IIRC even Photoshop exports to it.

ED for those confused JP2 & JPEG2000 are different failures.

Except the video is actually talking about jpeg xl or .jxl. I watched it yesterday. It's a more widely accepted version (photoshop, affinity, gimp) with some great features including lossless compression and support for transparency

Yes, lossless jpeg. Because PNG just wasn't working. And it's not like the whole point of jpeg was to be lossy compression and take up much less space than lossless.

The only reason I could imagine for a lossless jpeg with transparencies is they decided they need something like PNG but with a patent.

No idea if it's from somewhere else, but my reference for this kind of sentences is from The Incredibles blush
