I could use one if anyone has a lead.

  • Flat, or do you need it to have some dimensionality, such as beveled edges?

For a very basic star you can do it in DS:

Create a cylinder, I've set the axis to Z but that isn't vital - what is important is giving the cylinder ten sides (five points, five indents) and one segment (so you don't have too much fiddling to do, though you could add more if you wanted a degree of rounding).

    Create cylinder

Create a DForm and move the field right out of the way.

    Remove field

Set the DForm itself to scale down the cylinder's width - in my case that's x-scale and y-scale.

    Set scaling

Swiitch to the Node Weight Map Brush tool and open Tool Settings, with one of the DForm parts selected

In Tool Settings click Add Map nextt o Influence Weights.

    Apply weight map

Now in the viewport paint on every other set of side vertices, front and back - it's easiest to do this in wire shaded view. Make sure you hit only the indent vetices, not the points - it doesn't matter if you hit the mid point as it won't move whatever the weight is since it's in the centre of the scale effect. Keep painting until the points stop moving - that's 100% effect, if you try stopping part way it will be impossible to keep everything even.

    Paint weights

When done you can use the slider under the map to adjust the depth of the indents.

I have several .obj in this free Christmas kit. Works in Bryce, Daz Stiudio 4.8, and other 3D programs. Textures not included.

Perfect jewlery boxes has a star box, the lid works well for some things.  It was a weekly freebie, you likely have it in your account.

Richard, your method works very well...with a few minor modifications in Blender laugh

Cranked this out in about 10 mins, including UV mapping it.

mjc1016:  It looks very nice. Have you considered uploading it to your sharecg gallery?

    Thanks,

Well, after I get some textures for the bell, too...not going to do balls or fancy ones, I'll throw them on there...
