How To Use Included Color Presets with dForce Bettie Treble Key Hair?

This is the hair that's included with the Golden Ticket bundle with Colm Jackson Zoey. The product includes six hair colors, but I haven't been able to apply any of them. In the Surfaces pane, when I expand the hair, there's something called "defaultMat". I'm guessing that keeps the color set to default. How can I use the included color presets?

I loaded the hair on Genesis 9 and the various H.Mats applied flawlessly: are you trying to use that hair with another figure?

Thanks for your answer, Elor. No, I'm trying to use it on CJ Zoey G9, the character in the bundle. I've tried to load the hair as I normally do, and nothing changes. Is there a different way to apply the color presets?

  • Which version of DS? Does the hair get parented to the figure (it should, by default, but that can be turned off - which will break the hierarchy).

I'm using DS 4.24, and the product was installed using DIM. Yes, the hair is parented to the figure.  What I'm seeing now, is the presets do have an effect on the hair, but it's not anything close to what the colors should be. The blond color, for example, is a dull, grayish hue; nothing that could be thought of as blond, and certainly no where close to the pre-set icon. The same is true for the other colors. Maybe I'm not using the product properly or some setting is off.

    UPDATE

I uninstalled it in DIM and reinstalled it with DIM. I think it's working now. The colors are changing, at any rate. They don't look anything close to what the preset icons would indicate they should resemble, but maybe that's normal for this product.  I doubt if I'll use it much...

  • How are you lighting the scene (assuming you are looking at renders)?

I've been using the default Dome and Scene for these initial renders.

They do work for me in a scene with the default settings (having remembered to turn Headlamp off, since I was using the General Release and I usually use the beta) - this is DS 6 so that I could use the GPU to render.

Thanks for posting this image, Richard! I think what I'm seeing in my attempts, is a lot of burned out highlights. In your render, the hair colors are much more distinct. I also think my expectations have been thrown off by how much the thumbnails for each color preset differ from what the colors actually look like when rendered.  I'll have to see about getting a handle on the highlights and see if that allows the colors to become more apparent.

The default HDRI is pretty flat, which does tend to even things out - try a different HDRI, or try adding some spotlights at an angle to give something to reflect and some shadows. Also make sure the auto headlamp is off - I had it on initially and then did burn out a lot of the hair (Render Settings>Editor tab>General gropup, near the bottom)..This is a very quick fiddle adding three spotlights (one to our right, one to our left and above, one behind (you would see it it if render emitter was on) - the one on the right is Rectangle, default luminosity, the others are discs with the one behind us set to 3,000 and the one bnehind them at 2,250 and 40 cm across; I also upped the ISO and increased the cm^2 factor, and turned off Burn Highights in Render Settings>Editor>Toned Mapping. It isn't a great render by any means, but it does show that the hair responds to the lighting.
