Share your experience: File size of Daz products

Hello!

Today I wondered: Is there any way to figure out how large a product file is (before purchasing & downloading)?

Somewhere I saw something like that. But maybe I'm confusing the DAZ shop presentation with another one...

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately it's not listed on product pages or in the readme at Daz.
Renderosity includes it on product pages, maybe that's the shop you were thinking of.

I've asked multiple times for this to be included, and have been told I can ask the help desk before buying a product, and therefore Daz does not need to bother includign it in the product description.

Thank you. And I wanted to proudly announce: "Found this feature at Renderhub" – they have it too :)

It's a pity that Daz doesn't see it the same way. For me, it is information about the quality of a product and can be relevant for deciding between two products.

Edit: One more thing to research-before-buy: If I want to buy something at the official price, I might ask a lot of people. Help desk, forum, etc. But for me, Daz becomes a hobby. No purchase becomes vital.

I have asked for this feature too, as I've had some really bad experiences with product files being so huge I couldn't use them at all because they took up way too much space or were simply unwieldy in DS with my specs. Of course, you can always return things, but it's just so disappointing if you already fell in love with, say, a gorgeous hair. That wouldn't happen if the file size was stated plainly on the promo page.

What i usually do is I check other products I own from the PA in question, and if I have reason to suspect the file size might be too large for me I ask in the forums if someone already owns it. Saved me quite a few times from making a purchase I later regretted, so can recommend that.

  • I'll be honest, I've never considered file size when purchasing. If the item is cheap enough and I can envisage a use for it, I'll buy it. It will get downloaded onto my storage drive ready to install when I need it, on whichever PC I want to use it on.

What some folks have to consider is their download speeds and amounts per month and if they are the sole user in their household or share with a family. And then there is where the products might be stored. Until recently my flatmate and I have shared 1.1TB of downloads or use per month. He has three websites he maintains, data on Google docs and research he does for his writing, along with a LOT of podcasts and YouTube videos and downloading of movies and books from Amazon or other sites where he purchases them.

Me, I have had to build and rebuild my DAZ Studio databases too many times and that required me monitoring how much each file I downloaded would use and the running total for the month. When a PA is polite enough to tell us up front the files are broken up and the sizes it helps. I have a bit of a shock when a new file shows up in the online Product Library listing out for a large number and each a moderate to high MB/GB size.

Now we are on an unlimited plan. That helps.

  • You still have restricted internet plans over there? I think pretty much all of the providers in the UK are now unlimited and have been for some time.

Some users have tens of thousands of files stored offline, create a small app that can scan their file sizes and put a webpage up somewhere where you can see the sizes by searching on product SKU.  Pretty simple to do.

Actually DazDeals could include that feature I think.

The absence of listed download sizes is why I always hesitate to buy from here. Depending on the item, you can tell if something may be inefficiently mapped, textured, or has too many polys based on the download size. So not seeing the size makes me think DAZ has something to hide and just want to cater to the collectors with FOMO.

I'm soooo relieved about this. I was afraid that I would be alone with my sceptical toughts. For example, I have a dress (not from this shop here) in my library made of a single material (optical) which comes with three half-empty normal maps and loads with an activated metallicity, which is deactivated with a black map. Why? It seems so sloppy. I would not buy a bread with such a first impression.

I bought "Gou Luk Bundle" because it had hair and an outfit. Iy was over 2 GIG. I ended up getting a new sshd and seldom use anything but the hair because there are so many morphs in the clothes they are unusable.

Most anything from Luthbel will have enormous downloads sizes. Beautiful work, no optimization at all. I got a freebie pillow set once that was a full gigabyte download. Download sizes here can be reasonable or a Jack-in-the-box of download horror with no way to know in advance.

The most extreme I've seen so far when it comes to file size is a character which is 7.4 GB when installed.

This is a serious lack in the DAZ shop. The file size is essential as we have to download the asset, not everyone gets a super fast internet connection, ad it may also be metered. Plus the file size can be effective to judge the product weight in the workspace, for example it is likely that a 5 gb hair asset will be more cumbersome that a 200 mb hair asset.

I myself prefer not to get too heavy assets, as they will probably be too much cumbersome in the workspace as well.

Let's remember we need two file sizes: download size and installed size.

If you have a product installed with DIM, it can give you both (export data to CSV).  So, theoretically, if someone should happen to own all the products in the store and have them installed, you could get the data for all the products that way.  More realistically, you could combine data from multiple people using DIM and probably get data for most of the products.
