How did you discover Daz/Poser?

I can't remember the exact year but it was a good while ago. I'd been dabbling with 3D and was an established graphic designer for a while by the time I saw people using Daz for book covers (which, at the time, was the focus of my business). Decided to give it a try and fell in love with it. Book covers are no longer the core part of my business, but I still use Daz as much as I can for plenty of things like animation, elements for my designs etc. It's very fun and a huge time saver having Daz in my design workflow - I can't even begin to figure out how much time I've saved by using my existing Daz library alongside my own models.

I found Bryce and Daz Studio (version 2.3 I think) plus some content on a magazine cover disc in January 2010.

Hunting round the internet for information I discovered that DAZ had just made all it's base figures (V1-V4 and all the others from those generations) free to download so grabbed them quickly, also Genesis "1" when it eas released. They had weekly freebies too, so for several months I just picked those up. Then in the Platinum Club (as it was then) Anniversary Sale in October I took the plunge and bought an annual membership. I'm still here.

ETA: Oh, and I won a copy of Poser in a competition at (I think) Renderosity. I believe it was Poser 6, but I can't remember as it never made the move from my old PC to my new(er) one. Having used DS for a while I found the UI so different that I could never get along wth it.

As a geologist I want aan inexpesive way to visualize USGS DEMs. I found a free copy of Bryce on CNET, downloaded it and had to go to DAZ3D to register it. Since I was then rgistered at DAZ I started exploring DAZ Studio as a free alternative to Poser.

Bryce ngl is fun to mess with, I gotta make a trippy render with it sometime!

A fellow author was using Daz to create her covers and recommended it to me. I wasn't sure if I could create anything good, but my own cover designer was using Daz and photomanipulation, so I gave it a go. Some four years later, and most of my covers were made by me, in Daz and Affinity (with the exception of the urban fantasy series that was done by my designer, also using Daz), and for my newset book, I even created illustration-like style with the help of tonemapping, Fotosketcher, and some brush work in Affinity.

And it became a fun hobby too. I regurarly make non-book related renders just for fun of it.

Oh sweet! Where can I go and check out your renders?

I discovered Renderosity sometime in October of 2004. Wanted to know how people were making the art they were posting there, so I tracked down Poser, which I couldn't afford as I was still in high school at the time. Then I tracked Victoria 3 to Daz. Couldn't afford her either. Discovered a free download for Daz Studio Beta. Got all excited, downloaded it, installed it, ran it, loaded up whatever free figure it was that came with it... and was stumped because the default display setting at the time was solid bounding box, and I couldn't figure out how to switch it or figure out how to do renders. So I kinda gave up on it. Then a month later, Aiko 3 was released (much more up my alley than V3 was). And after discovering free Aiko 3 LE, I decided to give Daz Studio another try. By that point, the beta had been updated, and the default display was Texture Shaded instead of bounding box. And after several months of playing around with Daz Studio and finding free content for Aiko, I finally made my first Daz Studio render of Aiko in July of 2005 on a computer that could only just barely run D|S. I've been using Aiko 3 and Daz Studio ever since.

Gonna have to snag some stuff from your gumroad at some point. I really like your work especially with your anthros :D

     Thanks!

I hope you don't have an aversion to RenderHub, because due to changes on Gumroad, it looks like I might have to close my account, or at least pull my products (I'd be leaving my freebies up there though).

I bought Poser 4 at Orell Füssli at Füsslistrasse 4 8022 Zürich during Autumn on November 26, 1999 between 19:00 and 20:00 when I was bored wandering about one Friday evening after work.

DAZ much, much later, on September 9th, 2009 in the evening via the internet at DAZ3D.com.

I fooled around with POVray in the 90s. Gave up on 3D.

I made an account and downloaded some version of Daz in Feb 2013 (according to my order history). Gave up.

In August 2024, I tried again. It stuck.

Friends introduced me to Poser back in the 90s after I suggested the idea of a digital "woody" to them.
So I learnd, that Larry Weinberg created exactly that kind of software, that he called "Poser".
"Poser" like fake Metal musicians. laugh
I purchased Poser 4 together with the Poser 4 Pro Pack back in fall 2001.
I was hooked to the possibilities and irritated by its limitations.
I used every version of Poser until 2014 as it was stuck with only a really bad Victoria 4 doll available.
I switched to DAZ Studio with a finally decent Genesis 3 figure and the Iray render engine. So glad to not be dependend on that terrible 3deligt or Poser firefly render engine.
DAZ Studio has become my favorit app, since Poser dropped into a joke.
Now DAZ is stuck like Poser before. It is far from any progress. It's slow on dforce, has a bad main figure with no solutions for better joint bendings in sight.
Now I see a circle closing, by seriously considering going back to pen and paper, where it all started.
Thanks to DAZ for all the fun and excitement and no thanks for killing it all with a history of bad descisions.

Totally my husband's fault. In November 2009, I saw my then boyfriend creating these 3D graphic characters. He loved one called Aiko as he loves anime. I thought it looked cool so he sent me a link to this site called daz3d. At that time I think you could get the base prgram free (it was a long time ago) but if you wanted the Pro version you had to buy it. He told me there was lots of freebie content. He did warn me though. He said "like any good drug the first taste is free" and laughed. I had just missed the October sale. Within a month I became monthly Daz+ subscriber which switched to yearly in March when they offered a decent discount. I bought the Pro version then too. I spend way too much here but I love dabbling. I'm 66 and still working full time so I don't get to play as much as I would like to but I am retiring from my day job as of February 1, 2027 and hope to spend more time on my hobbies. Doing the things I love instead of the things I need to to pay the bills. My husband still uses Daz but doesn't spend anywhere near what I do and creates even less. He is a big fan of what I can do and I am not nearly as talented as some others here but I enjoy it. My Mum is an artist and I have what my sister calls the art gene. I also have Bryce, Hexagon, Carrara and Poser 13 which I dabble in but Daz was the first one I learned and therefore the one I tend to fall back on.
