how do I get the node I've selected to show up in the scene panel

when I select an item in the viewport it shows the root of the model in the scene. How I do I see the node I'm selecting?

What is the tool that you're using ? You probably activated Region Navigator tool or Material Selection tool. Try Alt Shift + U to switch to Universal tool then select a node .

Go into tool settings and check this says "node" for whatever tool you are working with:
