System requirements for D|S 6

As the discussion title asks; what are the system requirements for D|S 6?

I've got a scene with three clothed characters - two G8M's and one G9 - one volumetric, scenery, and a bunch of lights. There's one decal, the characters have some geoshells, and that's about it. Everything is render subdivision 2 or lower. Render settings (iterations, time, and so on) are standard. Rendering out to 1500 x 927. My GPU is a nVidia GeForce RTX 4080.

This would seem to me a renderable scene, nothing too crazy.

But I haven't been able to render it. D|S keeps crashing. What am I missing?

I've seen no official info. about DS 6's sys requirements. Actually appr. 10% of my scenes crash DS 6 when rendering with it, esp. with SBH / volumetric objects, delta mesh, etc..

I don't have any 50 series cards so I don't have to rely on DS 6 to render.  I do believe there're still bugs in Ds 6 in terms of iray rendering. If you don't have 50 series card, you won't benefit much from using DS 6 except for sth. like fast scene opening...

Crashing, as in Daz Studio crashes or stop responding?

    Or just not rendering?

How much RAM do you have?

    Thanks to your comment, I reinstalled DS 4 and to my amazement, it got further than DS 6. That's not how software should work; new (release) versions should be better ^^;

Both and more. Just closing down, stopping responding, locking up my PC, crashing my display driver...

16 Gb. IMHO, that should be plenty for most applications.

Usually something to the effect of running out of memory and/or CUDA errors. DS is atrocrious with its memory management and it seems to have gotten worse, not better over the years.

I have a laptop, Windows 11, RTX 4090 with both DS4.24 and 6.26 and 6.26 Beta. Regardless of which version of Daz Studio I am using I have to be aware of how much stress I am putting on the scene geometry.

One character with hair and clothing and all with high levels of textures will stress my system out, much less add some of my sets or two more characters. Yes, some hairs can crash my systems (MacMiniM4 and the Win11) and I just have to uninstall them. I also have to lower some character's SubD levels they load at from 4 or 5 to 1 - 3 to just work with them. Add two characters that have 4 - 5 SubD and both systems lock up fast, especially after hair and clothes are added.

Your 4080 has 16Gb VRAM, but what about system RAM?

With 16 GB RAM, I would say it is likely you are running out of RAM.

Recommendation is 2-3 times RAM as the amount of VRAM.

That's to take full advantage of the GPU without having to page to disc, smaller scenes would not be a problem in that respect - though 16GB is certainly not generous for this kind of work. However, driver crashes or whole system crashes sound like more than just resource issues - more like the heavy load of rendering exposing a hardware or system configuration issue. Is this a laptop or desktop? Have you used a system tool like HWMonitor to check temperatures when the system is under load?

It's a shame it's this way. As much as it can be hardware, I feel there's room for improvement on its memory handling.

I understand you meant system RAM - that just so happens to be also 16Gb ;-)

Might do that upgrade. Got two slots left on my mobo anyway.

A desktop. And no, haven't yet used a tool to keep an eye on temperature. Honestly, if it were a hardware or system configuration issue, I'd expect my gaming to pull it down, too. What are the requirements?

16Gb system RAM is nowhere near enough for DS. 32GB would be an absolute minimum on W11 but ideally you want 64GB or more. Try and get the same brand/family as your existing as it will be matched to work efficiently with your CPU, assuming you bought it retail build.

Not necessarily, as games and 3D rendering tend to use the system in different ways. Notably, rendering tends to put a heavy load on the system for longer times, which is more likely to trigger heating problems for example.
