New User's Contest - November 2015
Sponsored by DAZ 3D and DzFire (DzFire is awarding from his store here at DAZ, 1st place 3 items, 2nd place 2 items and HM 1 item)

Are you new to the 3D World? Are you at the beginning stages of learning 3D rendering? Have you been around for a little bit but feel you could benefit from some feedback or instruction? Have you been

around awhile and would like to help other members start their creative journey? Well then come and join the fun as we host our newest contest...

This month's attention will be on Materials.; WIP thread.

I will be checking in on the WIP thread as will the rest of the Community Volunteers to try and help with anything you all may need, so feel free to ask questions. Look in the WIP thread for links on Materials.
For a list of the current contest rules, please see this thread : Contest Rules

When working on your submissions, if you would like to get feedback as you work or before posting your final image, please post your image to the WIP thread. People will be popping in to the WIP thread to

give you some critique and advice on your entry and help along the way. Please keep all comments on entries etc to the WIP thread as well because comments or requests for help/feedback/advice will be removed from the contest thread and merged into the WIP thread. This thread is only for posting final contest submissions.

For those veterans of the forums that would like to help, because this contest is designed for the beginner to learn from, we will be randomly selecting posts offering helpful tips and/or critiques to receive a special voucher as well so, whether you are a seasoned artist or an aspiring one, there is fun for everyone!

Well, it looks like I'm first in here but here's my entry - a hero from one of my novels, Lathan Aro.

Every material has been customized in one form or another in Photoshop and I also created new bump, normal, and displacement maps while I was at it. See the WIP thread for exact details if you're curious. With the new Gen 3 stuff coming out I wanted to see if the older stuff can still keep pace. I used the the Atlas character by SAV for Michael 4 and rendered in Iray in DAZ Studio 4.9 Public Beta.  The only postwork in Photoshop was adding the gradient background, fixing a little glitch on the sash, and adding my signature.

    Cheers all,

  • Here is my entry.  Rendered in Iray.  Adjusted several material settings on the fur to give it more depth and a more realistic render.  Small amount of postwork in Gimp: brightness/contrast, saturation, soft light highlights, and lens flare.

  • Decided to go ahead and enter the other version of my bear cub before I take off on my trip.  I like both for different reasons and I'm not sure which I actually like better.  This entry is based on the same raw render as the first entry.  It has basically the same postwork as the except I played with the hue a little in this one as well.  I wish I could have done more, but I just ran out of time.

    Weary Warriors

I completey changed the textures on the girls clothing, as well as the dragon's armour.  The building in the background also had changes in the materials not just texture but with different channels as well.  The bedroll was completely redone down to the buckles and straps. Her hair was adjusted a bit on the bump maps and the shininess.  The dragons wings have a new texture applied and the girl has some scars on her face and arm. Both of them have dirt and the dragon has blood on his nails.

    Title: Well Dance

    Software: Daz Studio no postwork

I used Shaders on the clothing on both charactors and Shader Mixer to do the shadows for all in the scene and finally figured out how to get a background in the scene.

    Software used:

    Daz 4.8 > Photoshop CC

I have been working in Iray lately so I figured I would submit something to see how I was doing.

And, apparently I suck at forum posting, so my image is posted below.
