G8 vs G8.1

Can someone explain the differences between G8 and G8.1? I was under the impression that the difference was in the face / head and that everything else was inter-changable. However, if I load a G8.1 character, I can't apply any of the G8 body morphs nor do any of the clothing or poses for G8 appear in Smart Content. And if I load a G8 character, I can't apply any of the G8.1 heads / faces. Is there anything or anyway to share things between G8 & G8.1 or should I just consider them two completely different bases just like G3 & G8?

The meshes are exactly the same. The rigging is suppose to be the same, but I do think, the pubic area is different. the UV map and the UV topology is different.
The incompability between those two appears to be unnecessary, but intentional.
If you do need a specific G8.1 morph for G8, the work around would be to export it as an *.obj and load it as a morph target for G8.
Are you using an old version of Daz Studio?
Almost all G8.0 stuff will load automatically on to G8.1 (and show in Smart Content), but I think it needs a minimum of DS 4.15.
This, however, is expected. G8.0 morphs and skins are mostly forward compatible* (although you need to do some fiddling in the files to get G8.0 expressions to work on G8.1), but G8.1 morphs and skins are generally not backward compatible.
* The only things that really aren't forward compatible at all are specific G8.0 strand-based/dForce hairs that generate from the figure rather than from a separate scalp, and some scripts that won't recognise G8.1 as a valid G8 figure.
I don't particularly recommend this, as you will lose all corrective morphs.
G8.1 uses the same mesh as G8, however the "torso" surface has been split into "head" and "body".
G8.1 has new UVs, but the G8 ones are also included so G8 textures will work with 8.1.
Rigging is the same beside the fact that G8.1 uses a new system for expressions.
The only difference regarding anatomical elements is that both male and female versions are provided for both bases.
Morphs specifically made for 8.1 won't be available for G8, however you should have access to G8 morphs when loading G8.1, except for base expressions morphs (though there is a workaround to make those work too).
Clothes and hair made for G8 should work directly on 8.1. Those made for 8.1 will work with G8 if you change the "compatibility base" in the metadata.
G8.1 is backward compatible with G8, with a couple of exceptions (off the top of my head: expressions, geoshells, but it's fixable in both cases, and some clothes strangely set) but G8.1 specific content will not work on G8.
In short, you can use Victoria 8 morph and materials on G8.1F but you can't use Victoria 8.1 morph and materials on G8F.
I have a G8.1M head & skin that I want to put on a G8M body. The head is not available for G8M and the body morphs that I want are not avaialble for G8.1M -- what's the simpliest way to accomplish this?
I would like to keep it G8M based because I have more morphs and acessories for G8M than is available for G8.1M
PS : I'm running 4.24
To work out why the G8.0 morphs are not working on G8.1, because G8.1 is supposed to load G8.0 morphs.
Backporting skins or morphs onto G8.0 without breaking things or losing functionality will be quite a considerable hassle.
What body morph are you trying to use? Maybe it's possible to fix it to appear on G8.1 as it should (I don't remember having any problem using G8 morphs with G8.1).
Genesis 8.1 wil pick up any Genesis 8 morph (or other property) that isn't blocked by a dummy file 9as the Gensis 8 expressions are, presumably to avoid confusion and system overheadfrom having two different sets of expression controls).
