Trying to Decide Between G9 or G8.1

I’m wondering if I should go with Genesis 9 as of April 2026. How much heavier is the performance cost for Genesis 9 compared to 8.1? And can it be mitigated to match 8.1? Also, what about viewport performance and load times with Genesis 9, any way to mitigate this as well?

Set the SubD level to one lower and the geometry will, if anything, be lighter. Adjust materials to save resources as you would for Genesis 8/8.1 - the 8K detail maps aside they may well not be very different.

    It depends :

if your main goal is studio portraits, G9 figures can really be awsome.

For whole body, G9 can be much more detailed with HD add-ons but extreme movements are really picky .

G8/1 is well knowned, there are tons of addons for bending and folds. Plus G8.1 is a real bargain now !

As for video RAM both needs a lot.

This is a just a hobby, keep that in mind

G9 hairs are often much nicer.

If you are creating pics for an audience, it helps to know what kinds of people are following you.

If most are people who like the "DAZ look" and don't create their own renders, they won't care or notice what you use (you can use multiple generations in the scene) since they just enjoy the finished illustrations. Here, you can just go with whatever.

But if your audience uses DAZ too, they're going to be a lot more picky. Though, there's people who stan G8 pretty hard. So using G8 will please them.

If his audiance uses Daz and he knows this, he'd ask them. For a new Daz user, I don't think the know about "DAZ look" at all.

I would assume longevity, ease of use, and cost are their primary concerns. I doubt there are any G8 longevitity issues. Ease of use is probably a wash and perceived benefits of one over the other is probably just sample bias. And cost make G8 cheaper. But not significantly cheaper. The premium assets for both generations are about equal in price still. Accessories for G8 are generally cheaper though.

  • I perfer to use Gen8 ... as most of my art is based on those figures. Have used Gen8.1 and Gen9 a little. Depends who your art is for.

And there is a little issue I have with Gen 9 on 4.24 (yet to check if that happens on daz6) - another reason why I don't use that much.

I try to stick with G8 - there's loads more stuff than for G8.1. I play a little with G9 but not for my main projects, it's just too resource heavy for too little appreciable gain in quality. Plus I find the adjustment interfaces confusing as they're completely different to G8 and don't make logical sense.
