Please tell me what I'm doing wrong

in Technical Help (nuts n bolts)

I have just recently returned to creating images and have forgotten what to do in this case.  I am using a blank background, and want it to render white, as a .jpg file.  Can you please tell me what to do to achieve this?  Thank you for your help.

    If you save as PNG or Tiff you an use the transparency/alpha channel to add any background you like.

    Why wouldn't you just change the background to white?
