Why so few "cute" G3F characters?
If you look back at the catalogue for Genesis and Genesis 2 female characters its awash with the kind of pretty, cute character styles that I love (for example http://www.daz3d.com/ysabeau-6, http://www.daz3d.com/ly-jolie, http://www.daz3d.com/ly-dominique, http://www.daz3d.com/fw-jennie-hd-for-belle-6, http://www.daz3d.com/aria-for-genesis-2-female-s, http://www.daz3d.com/anabelle, http://www.daz3d.com/bryonia and pretty much anything G2/G1 by Silver etc etc I could easily go on). Its the young, puffy-lipped, big-eyed cuteness that I really like to render. Theres so much choice there for that style.
However, no-one seems to be making that cute style of character anymore with G3F, with the exception of Teen Josie 7 (and maybe http://www.daz3d.com/p3d-celine). Even the artists that used to specialise in that style seem to be shying away from it now in favour of less stylized characters. I'm not saying that the G3F characters we're seeing aren't pretty - just that they're not the style I've grown accustomed to wanting. Most characters are coming out as more realistic thin-lipped, angular-faced, middle-aged, serious looking super-models. Is it just that the cutsie style is very hard to achieve with G3F, or has that style effectively died with the advent of Genesis 3 and a move towards realism?
I'm sure people will say that its still early days yet for G3F and G1 and G2 have more range because they've been around for longer but given the artists who've released already I would've expected atleast a few to have shown up by now. I hope that its just a matter of time, but I'm starting to have my doubts.
Please PAs extend this style into G3F! And if possible build them off the base G3F UV like you have been doing for most characters so far. I'll be your best friend!

They prefer tall /nod
http://www.daz3d.com/p3d-celine
5' 11" - seriously, I don't know any females that tall in their heels - presuming they wear em which is not usual.
The two tween characters by the same artist as I've linked are styliased and kinda cute. Otherwise there is a definite derth; btw, could you link to what you mean by cute?
EDIT
Mistake I've corrected.
I did - I put a bunch of links in the first sentence. Heres a few more though:

Now that I list them, they are mostly Thorne/Sarsa, Silver and Lyoness characters. Theres an even wider selection for V4 as well.
Ha! Sorry, I'm suffering from a stupid moment.
Just goes to show that what one considers cute, another doesn't. Some we agree on.
I don't think Teen Josie 7 is, but from the links, you might - note I say might. Personally, I think the character looks creepy (think it's the eyes).

Amandla has a very pretty face, and might qualify as cute?
But I'd say that so far, there haven't been any stylised characters outside of Skyler and TJ7.
Do you mean cute or toony cute. Teen Josie looks cute to me, yes, but she is a semi toon. "Put them in the Dip" ;)
I guess its all very subjective. Personally I wouldn't class most Thorne, Silver or Lyoness characters as toon, but some people might. I'd say stylized, but not toon. I think its possible for real life women to resemble them.
I suppose if I was getting really specific to narrow it down to my own personal tastes I should've said that I hope these 3 PAs bring some of their old G1/G2 character designs to G3F. But I was trying to broaden the topic so as not to make it all about me. Apparently I failed
.
Maybe people think there are already plenty of cute G3F characters around... I'd disagree but its all a matter of personal taste.
Vyria for Arabella is very cute. :-) Without her fangs, that is.
I haven't noticed the lack of cute characters for gen 3. I guess because these characters aren't really my favorite, but I think there still seem plenty to me. Most of the ones from the Josie lineup, and there was one released recently Celine.
My girlfriend is around 5'11 in heels. Also, that celine texture is awesome! I love the freckle-across-the-nose look, haven't seen a quality texture with it yet.
P3Design's Rebecca has been my go to. That's just me though. I did edit her though. For the most part everything is the same shape except for, well, the upper portions. I also darkened her skintone a bit with Sickle's Beautiful Skin product. I need to get Celine though, she is a cutie.

Josie 7 was made by Thorne, that's why there's that sort of likeness there (unless I'm very wrong, but Thorne's name is on the package.)
Jas, Karyanna, and Giselle are my favourite G2 characters, so I've been waiting for more like that too. At the moment my go tos for G3 are Josie and FWSA Jade HD for that role, but even though Josie has some of the fairyish features (big eyes, fairy ears) I've been hoping for one that's designed just for that fantasy archetype like Giselle was.
And an anime character. Aiko/Keiko mix, please.
And if people are only going to make Victoria clones (i.e. almost all of the hundreds of G3F characters) please stop making them ALL so ridiculously tall. 5'10+ is not an average height for females.
Don't get be wrong, I think that Victoria 7 is the best looking Gen3 character overall, but there is a thing called variety, and I'd love to see some more of it.
then I recommend to use gen3female for animation, or add HD morphs to show good (more good) detail. which vendor designed.
(or simply serch genesis2female character,, it is only my view,,)
Then,, if you hope to get cute (more cute) character for static render, I recommend to send PM to your favorite vendor,
to make morph for gen2female ,because,, which have more dense mesh around face. Yes it is just all my preception and my view.
maybe someone feel gen3female morph character is more beautiful than gen2female morph characters.
then,,, I have one question,,, why the poligon count are reduced about gen3female head ? someone know answer?
===============
chohole! I get mail from modelator, ,and it said , "I can write so"
I just do same as the suggestion. , why you can delete and edit it ? I hope, not controll my view, by your favor only.
I'm not an expert, but my (limited) understanding is that because the mesh is much neater now, it subdivides much more nicely so it doesn't need the higher base polygon count as a starter. If that's correct, it also makes HD packs more important if you want finer details.
I like a lot of G2 characters, but V7 looks stunning compared to V6 - to me at least. I didn't notice the improvement on V6HD nearly as much as I did with V7 (I also haven't noticed Arabella's as much, but I haven't used her as much either.)
Yes I know gen3female almost keep square mesh for sub-D better, but sub-D lost detail ,smooth all. it can not controll without HD moprh.
or I may try set sub-D weight manually .(I do not know other way, at least, my 3d modelor and daz stuido only, to controll sub-D mesh,
as same as bas mesh.
That is all what I suspect.
.when I make naturall dimple morph (not just round) around mouse, for my customized character ,
I need not feel much difficulity aboout genesis2female, without HD morph. because genesis2female base mesh line is really beatufiul I think.
I hope someone check (if you do not think so,,) it in daz studio, then check where part have dense mesh, in face part.
it has plenty mesh good arranged, for each detail part of face well. they are really well desigend to achieve naturall, but original face.I feel.
then I think the quality better than gen3female which desigend for sub-D more smooth (if your suspect is the purpose, and I feel almost same thing,,)

This is a good point. Its probably better to say that I'm bemoaning the lack of fairy/fae style characters for G3F. Thorne, Silver and the FWSA team always used to make such great fae-style characters for V4, G1 and G2 but I haven't seen any yet for G3. They have always been my go-to characters for the older generations. I'm worried that these excellent character PAs are starting to move away from the fae look towards more realistic characters for G3.
Its also my fear that they're waiting for Giselle 7 to be released so that they can base their fairy characters off that UV set. I really hope not because character products are so much more appealing and easier to use when they're based on the base G3F UV.
I don't have P3D Celine, but she looks attractive from the demo shots. Just way too tall, yet again.
I see V7 as the "good" version of G3F, and so a very important character. There are a lot of mixed opinions about Josie, but I think she's interesting and different enough from Victoria that I bought her. I bought Arabella because she was on super sale and I think her body shape and neck are interesting. I don't like her face, however. It really bugs me that her clefty nose feature is built into her, rather than a morph slider. But since she was cheap she makes a good sister skin and alternative to V7. I think Bethany is interesting too, but I haven't had any need to buy her yet. I still can't understand the existence of Eva and Karen.
I also really don't get the separate UV thing. Obviously it makes sense that G3 has a new UV layout, but why does every character have to have one? You can assign any UV layout you want anyway, so what is the point? I don't think I've seen a single third party character that uses anything other than G3Fs UVs (I know there are some V5 UV G2Fs.)
It does seem like many artists are trending away from their unique and intersting designs and into "make it look as much as V7 / realistic as possible." There have been a few interesting alternatives to race, but otherwise it's been the attack of the clones. I guess the silent majority must really like buying them, because I see lots of voices on the forums that want something different.
(This should be obvious, but I'm not saying that anyone's models look bad. The PAs on the site are all very talented and make beautiful work. I just want to see some sort of different beautiful work.)
We are obviously kindred spirits
. I agree that most of the characters we're seeing these days feel like V7 clone girls. I do really like Vyria too but in the end I just wasn't willing to buy Arabella 7 in order to make her look right (sorry Silver
) - thats the danger PAs face when they base characters off unnecessary UV sets that some people aren't going to want to fork out for; they lose sales.
I've stopped buying characters for G3 as well at the moment. I guess if we never see any of this style appear for her then I'll just have to begrudgingly abandon G3 and return to G2 where I know the choice is plentiful.
Do I see females so tall, sure; but not that common. I'm about 6'1" so I tend to notice when someone is close to having level eye contact. It's very unusual.
Agree on the freckles, they make her very appealing; probably hiding some fangs though, they would be a great additon to a hunter, those freckles. :)
The UVs are, it was explained to me, to help avoiding stretching in the texture.
Likewise. Four characters I've ignored.
I made a free teen morph on sharecg called Jewel. No textures just morph, needs Genesis 3 basics and morphs to work!
Here's another case in point. I'm very, very excited to see that Godin now has a store here at Daz because I think his/her(?) characters models for V4 and V6 over at Rendo are all amazing and I'd love to see similar ones produced for G3F. However, Godin's models here aren't like the ones they sell over at Rendo - they're closer to the familiar V7 clones we see all the time. Godin is a very talented PA - I'd say they're the best V7 clone models available here at Daz at the moment, but they don't seem like Godin's usual style.
Are Daz only accepting more generic looking character products now? Or have PAs just decided that style doesn't sell well anymore?
I want to highlight this so much. I'd really love to hear answers to that from someone in the know (obvious answer is because they sell, but do they sell that well compared to anything different?)
Cute is in the eye of the beholder. I think Selina is cute and adorable. I like Karen, too. (And I've been disappointed she didn't make any of the 50% off with purchase promotions this month.) But Eva doesn't do a thing for me. I think she is quite unattractive. Bethany has a cute face, but her figure puts me off. (If I want to see "voluptuous" I have only to look in the mirror... an action I avoid as much as possible!) I like Arabella's figure, though she's quite thin in the arms, because I know women who are naturally thin. And some of them have generous hips.
But it really is early yet, isn't it? G3F/V7 has been out for less than half a year. I'm sure we will start seeing a wider variety of characters as time goes by. And besides "cute" girls, I'd also like to see a few mature women as well.
lol, I guess "mature" is in the eye of the beholder too then cos I'd say that theres plenty of mature looking G3F characters to choose from right now (eg Cosette, Eryn, Mina, Vincenzina, Ginger, all the Eva 7's). Unless by mature you mean wrinkled.
Hopefully it is just a case of early days yet though, yes.
I really don't get Eva. I never thought of her as a mature type, but maybe that's it?
So she's delicate and feminine but also strong (the same as Victoria and Karen are) and has a "petite small" frame (she's 5'11.)
Maybe my problem is that I think of each Daz Original Character as intended to be a unique archetype, rather than just 'a character.'
- Victoria, the main quality archetype and model
- Eva, because ... reasons
- Karen, because ... a few superhero outfits to center around and then forever ignore?
- Josie, teen + slightly stylised
- Arabella, at first I was skeptical but I think she fills the horror role nicely.
If I was creating them as archetypes, I would have made Eva Mei Lin, Karen Monique, and then be working on Aiko next.
The superhero theme would have made more sense in my mind as a new morphing fantasy style base to sell with addon accessories for G3F, that share a new set of common UVs like the MFD does to focus sales around for years.
But maybe they're not supposed to be archetypes at all. I have no idea.
(Standard disclaimer: I think they're all very high quality and well made models; I'm talking about purposes, not quality.)
Well, unless I'm wrong, the PAs get the figures ahead of time to start work on them, (a few months?) so if there is a main character/figure coming down the pike, take heart in that the PAs may start to work on them sooner than you expect. I do like your list of cute females, and agree with quite a few of them. Two of my favorite gals have always been Nidale and Lotus, while not necessarily "cute" thought I would share. You could always mix part of them in to your figures.
Well my list was by no means exhaustive because there are many more G1 and G2 characters I love the look of (like Silver's entire back-catalogue). Agreed - I really like Nidale and Lotus too and I do think they're both cute to a lesser degree. I have Lotus but not Nidale due to the Olympia requirement.
The problem is that we can't mix any G1 or G2 shapes into G3, so if you're like me and you really want to start working with G3F you can't use any features from those older gen characters we loved so much. We have to wait for new ones to be created.
I hope they're not waiting for a major Daz character to be released because if they were then that might mean they'll use that main character's UV set, which is always off-putting from a shopping/budgeting perspective.
Really nice renders by the way
My SexyRoxy is cute and a realistic adult mid 20th G3female. http://www.sharecg.com/v/82572/browse/21/DAZ-Studio/B7_SexyRoxy-Updated-!!!
Victoria and G3F came out at the end of June. It's only just the beginning of November and G3F seems to have hit the ground running. Quickest adoption rate I've seen since Genesis launched. And yeah, an awful lot of the characters I see do seem to be V7 clones, but I suspect that there won't be any shortage of cutie-pie characters once people figure out how to morph the face without messing up the facial rig for expressions.
What I see a serious dearth of is old ladies. And since I'm an illustrator, and a fanartist who does a lot of images for some specific fandoms I *need* old ladies. Several of them. And by old lady, I do not mean halloween witches, although they will do in a pinch.
There never have been that many old lady skins in any of the markets, but there usually have been a few, certainly after a base figure has been out for a while. V4 had a nice selection of 6 or 8 that I got a pretty fair amount of use from. Genesis, not so much. G2 even less. But they could both still use V4's skins, so it didn't really seem too bad. Zev0's aging morphs help a lot, since it can add age to the underlying figure even if the skin isn't designed to show age.
But the 2 year development cycle for Genesis generations is not helpful. People did old ladies for V4 because V4 had been the primary figure for 3-4 years already. If a new generation of Genesis launches ever 2 years, people don't settle down to doing character actors for them, since the new one will be out momentarily, and that may affect one's potential sales.
The fact that G3 is not backwards compatible means that I am really living in hope that someone brings out a texture convertor, or that I could find some legal way of commissioning conversions for the skins that I use in my library of characters.
