How Do I Fix The Discrepancy Between G8 Skin and G8.1 Skin

How Do I Fix The Discrepancy Between G8 Skin and G8.1 Skin?  I recently started using Daz Studio 4.24 (on a Mac) so I could use characters with skin from 8.1 characters.

I'm using the exact same lights and light and render settings that I used in the old version of DAZ Studio.  Lights and settings I've used on hundreds of renders.

When I use them in Studio 4.24, inevitably the characters with the 8.1 skins are so light they're almost completely white.

Why is this happening?  And what do I do to fix it so they look like normal skins - like the skin the promo pictures for the characters.

I attached a screenshot of Genesis 8 & 8.1 charaters to show you what's happening.  Andre 8 is a pretty light skin, and Thomas 8.1 (from the look of the promo images) is a pretty dark skin.  The Genesis 8 characters render almost exactly the way they render in the old version of Studio I was using, and the Genesis 8.1 skins, although I can see that there is a skin texture there, the skin is way way too light.

    They default to different shaders - Geness 8.1 often uses the PBR Skn shader, which was new wth 8.1 and so not used on Genesis 8 characters (certainly not the Daz own-brand characters). How are you lighting the scene?

    I'm lighting the scene with a product called "Paper Tiger's Precision HDRI Lighting". 

    There are no lights listed in the Scene tab, so I assume the only lighting is from an HDRI.  The headlights on the camera are definitely off.  I'm using the lighting product's default settings for tone mapping etc. 

    I've used this specific light in this set for 6 years on hundreds of renders.  I haven't changed anything about the lighting.

    When I open the scene, I don't get a MISSING FILES message.

    I added Julian 9 to the scene and his skin renders as almost totally white, too.  He's the white character in the center.  

    The Genesis 8 character's skin render as normal - the same as they render in the old version of Studio.  The background renders as a medium grey, as it always has.

    The render engine is NVIDIA (MDL).  I never noticed the MDL before.  I don't know what the MDL stands for.

    So there's something I'm not doing to get the G8.1 and G9 character skins to render correctly.

    I think you are missing part of the shader. Mine don't render like that at all.

    I compared the surfaces tabs for specifically the SKIN.  The surfaces tab for all the Genesis 8 characters has a 5 in brackets, like this (5); and the surfaces tab for all the Genesis 8.1 characters has a 7 in brackets.  I'll attach the 2 tabs.  What does the 5 and 7 signify?  5 and 7 what?

    On the Render Tab I clicked the "default" setting.  I changed the lighting product to a beach scene I've used dozens of times. The beach and the Genesis 8 characters rendered perfectly, just like they did in the old version of Studio.  The Genesis 8.1 and Genesis 9 characters again render very very light

    The size of the group of surfaces you have selected.

    Where do you find Basic DS lightin in your content?  I didn't know there was a base set of lights.

    If you create a scene, there is a default HDRI that loads which is the basic light. My own guess is that you have loaded enough characters that you have run out of graphics memory so one of them is glitching.  Try deleting one figure and see if it renders the same.

    Yeah, just I loaded the characters and rendered and then changed the dome roation to sort of match yours.

    Ok, I'm trying it.  First I opened a NEW scene. Second I loaded Torment 8,1, and he load with no textures at all.  Then I loaded Julius 9 and he also had no texture at all.  Then I put bathing suits on them.  I didn't add or touch the lighting.  I didn't touch the render settings.  And I hit render.  And it's worse than all the previous renders.

    So I went into the content tab and applied Julian 9 and Torment 8.1 skin textures and hit render.

    So I can see there are skin textures on both of them.  They both look awful.  Torment is still no more visible than he was in the previous renters.  Julian has sort of skin coloured skin, but it looks about 1% as good as any Genesis 8 Character.

    I don't know why the background is black this time bedcause I literally didn't touch any other settings.

    I spent 11 hours today trying to get these 8.1 and 9 characters to render properly.

    It must be the version of Studio I'm using.  In the next day or two I'll get rid of it and download a fresh Studio and try again.

    The 5 and 7 just mean that you have "Consolidate Properties" checked.

    More importantly, it looks like you've somehow got 3Delight shaders on your 8.1 characters. The image for your G8.1 characters shows "Daz Studio Default" as the shader, and that's a 3Delight shader, not an Iray shader. The G8.1 shader normally says "PBRSkin". 

    I think you may need to redownload the Default Studio Resources; the only reason that it would be throwing 3Delight shaders on an 8.1 character -- that I can think of, anyway -- is because the PBRSkin shaders aren't present and so Studio doesn't know what the texture shader is telling it and it has to default to 3Delight. 

    Given the lighting issues you've also mentioned, uninstalling and reinstalling Studio and its resources may be the best way to go, as you've mentioned. Note that installing the most recent version of Studio will remove 3Delight from your system completely.

    First, I updated DIM to the newest version, then I uninstalled the character Torment 8.1, and then using DIM downloaded it again, and installed it.  Then I uninstalled the Genesis 9 Starter Essentials, and then downloaded and reinstalled them. I can't find any 8.1 Starter Essentials - are there such files?  Where are they?  How do I download them?

    I loaded Torment 8.1 and went to the folder in my Content window and opened the Torment 8.1 Materials folder and manually clicked on the materials to apply them to the figure.  Then I rendered it.  It's still slmost completely white.

    In the Torment 8.1 files there are no materials other than the Iray materials.  So that's what I clicked to load.  Are there other materials files that are missing?

    The Surfaces tab for the Torment 8.1 figure show that it still says:  Shader:  DAZ Studio Default (RSL).  Are there indeed files or something named PBRSkin ?  Somewhere?  How do I find them?  How do I install them?

    G8.1 is included in G8 starter essentials.

    PBRSkin shader (and the various other DS base shaders) is in "Daz Studio default resources" pack.

    If the Daz Studio Default Resources pack is on a different hard drive than the G8.1 character and skin textures - would that cause my problem?  Is DAZ Studio smart enough to pull the default resources from one hard drive and the skin textures from a 2nd external hard drive?

    Your problem is likely not related to Torment 8.1 or Genesis 9 Starter Essentials or any of the other figures using PBRSking you tried to load, but likely related to missing the PBR Skin shader itself which is, AFAIK, included in Daz Studio default ressources. Using PBRSkin will likely require a version of Daz Studio at least released around the time Genesis 8.1 was released:

    I'm usiing DAZ Studio 424.0.3 (64 bit).  Is that version supossed to work with PBR skin?

    The Log File is overwhelming.  What am I looking for?  How do I know if there is an error or missing file?

    So that's the file log for 1 character.  What am I looking for. (I changed my name to "anon" twice in the last 5 lines.)

    OK!  There's ERRORS.  Many say pbrskin .  So there are errors related to the pbrskin.  How do I fix it?

    Have you installed default ressources?

    And if you look at that path, does the file then exist?

    You'll need to delete the package to force DIM to download the new one that has the PBRSkin shader.

     

    So find the package in DIM

    Right click on it and Delete it.

    Then uninstall it.

    Now reinstall it.

    OK.  I uninstalled the resources and am reinstalling them now.  Here's another batch of errors that are from the same log entry as above (not from the log entry after I reinstalled the resources)

    The log says it's looking in a Connect library for it.

    Do you have the deafult resources installed twice?

    Once in DIM and again with Connect?

    If so, you need to uninstall it from Connect.
