Only empty or black render results.

I'm not sure what I've done, but for hours now I've only been getting blank or completely black renders (graphics card AND/OR CPU), no matter how often I reset the render settings or try to fix them using supposed solutions from online tutorials.

Is there any way to effectively reset this without having to reinstall the entire software?

If you look at Render Settings > Hardware what is then ticked?

If you look in your log Help > Troubleshooting > View Log what does it say when you try to render.

In Render Settings on top, there is a 'Default' button. I would assume it set render settings to default, but don't know.

  • My RTX 4070 Ti Super is selected as the hardware, but I've also tried it with the CPU and both, and I've pressed the default button several times.

The log file shows the following for a single render attempt:

The log states that you have run out of VRAM and CPU fallback is disabled - double-check that you have not accidentally blocked the CPU fallback.

Also, I am not an expert but 2 instances of 1 million triangles sounds like a lot so make sure nothing in the scene has an unusally high SubD?

16 GB of VRAM isn't enough? Wow!

Indeed, CPU fallback is disabled (though I've apparently always managed without it, even in more complex scenes, as this error only occurred today).

What's interesting is that I'm not trying to render a complex scene, but just a single product:

    - NEOFF Artemis-13 TLT Medical Transport (https://www.daz3d.com/neoff-artemis-13-tlt-medical-transport-poses-and-camera-anchor), just the Module without any extras, characters, background, etc

There must be something wrong with the product. I'll enable fallback as a precaution and try rendering a different object, because for the past few hours I've been foolishly trying to render only this one product (without a control product).

    Update:

The file in question still isn't rendering... Something seems to be seriously wrong with the product itself.

Other things are rendering, but now I'm experiencing a new phenomenon (presumably due to all this messing around).

If I use the Spot Render Tool, everything renders as usual.

But if I use the Render button, a tiny thumbnail is rendered. What could I have changed to cause this result? Any ideas? I'm getting a bit frustrated...

16GB should be enough to render that out on it's own but unfortunately I don't have the product myself to check. Do you own iray-memory-assistantscene-analyzer-organizer-simplifier or scene-optimizer?  Those will give you a quick overview of the subd settings (or estimated faces in the case of scene optimiser) so you can see what in the scene is perhaps causing the issue. Each increment of SubD multiplies the geometry and so it can balloon out of control real fast.  It could be that the product was released with a very high value by mistake?

What is the Pixel Size listed under the General section of the Render Settings tab? Has that accidentally been changed to 64x64 or something?

I actually just bought the scene optimizer, but I haven't used it yet.

It's certainly a good approach that I'll try out, so thanks a lot for your help.

Any further thoughts on the postage-stamp-sized render image described in the last post?

    That was it!

No problem, glad to help :)

Also, Scene Optimiser does list SubD of all objects in the scene - it's under the "Mesh Resolutions" tab at the top that I have never noticed before - another reason it's good to help others as it also helps me learn more myself :P
