Can I back it up manually by simply downloading files? If so could some one point me to exactly what files I need to download?

The following filter in DIM will give you a list of the product/package IDs for the General Release
    sku::18869,13176,16558,10673,9032,13173,16684,13000,16773,6952 && type::rx::^(?:Software|Plugin)$
As the SDK version did not change, the 4.24.0.4 plugins are compatible with the 4.24.0.3 application, so the only one you actually need to backup for 4.24.0.3 to retain a version with 3Delight is sku::13176

I need a way to get the really old versions. I have old scenes I can't load because the characters just load as grey blocks with no texture, or completely invisible. It is my understanding there was an intermediary version of DAZ studio that created files to make those old scenes work with newer versions of DAZ Studio. I need that version or an older one.

how old are we looking at

    duf/dsf old or dsa old?

D|S3 should still be available for download  in your library if you registered it

    https://www.daz3d.com/downloader/customer/files#prod_11999

the GUI is awful but if it loads your scenes you can resave them and D|S4 might open them

as long as you have the content and preferably the data files

I was able to resave the old fairy in a tree scene and poses for 4

...I still have backups of installers for every version form the current one I am on (4.21.0.5} back to 1.8.1.5.

I do also have the 4.24.0.3 for whenever I can update my system for Win 11

Sounds like they might be the old .daz scene files.

DS1, 2, 3 and 4.0 a scene was saved as a .daz file, however everything in the scene was saved into the data folder as .dso (mesh), .dsd (morph) and .dsv files, lose those files and you get what you've described.

If you have lost those files then it's a bit of a pain to recreate them, for older content (ie Poser) DS3 is needed, but if your scenes use Genesis then you will need DS4.0.

What??? I'm not that technical. You lot need to have a section that we can go to press a button and have everything we need download to our machine. I use 3dlight EXACTLY what do I need to do? The instructions are confusing. Why won't you guys leave well enough alone?

I love DAZ. I think they have a fantastic product. I own Poser but do not use it at all.

However when it comes to instructions and how tos, I too find DAZ at times very confusing.

And this is one instance when I find it hard to read through the murkiness.

As a retired database programmer and later  systems administrator I had to read many a technical manuals.

But I am sorry to say, nothing as confusing as DAZ's.

Sorry DAZ but you are writing instructions for a consumer based audience not folks trained in C++, operating systems, tcp-ip, routing, etc.

Please keep it as simple as possible.

Cheers and many thanks for all the great products over the last years.

so... i think i managed to find and copy in a separate folder what is probably the install files for my 4.22 public build beta, since i usually keep the install files, and i had them in my DIM download folder. ofc, impossible to download from daz any old beta versions, so i'm not sure if this is enough, like i couldn't find the scene builder for 4.22 in my downloaded DIM files. i have an update for it that i can see in DIM but it's for 4.23+.
think and probably being the operative words... i vaguely get the whole concept, makes sense, the details much less...

i also downloaded from the daz site the most recent version i.e. 4.24 general release, just in case, but i'm not really interested in installing a full version (general release) since i also have installed 4.11 to keep functionality of a few products that don't work in later versions. unless there's suddenly some catastrophe with my laptop (or maybe i get a new one) and my saves to reinstall 4.22 public beta fail and i still need a pre-4.24 dec 29 version.

my point is more to have some install files to continue working with 4.22 beta + 4.11, my actual setup, in case my old laptop breaks down - or i manage to get a new one. as long as those 2 versions work, i can render in iray as i generally do, but also in 3dl for a few niche products (special shaders, camera effects). i'm also not interested in any form of subscription/mandatory online use with any server, and my old laptop might crash anyway with 4.22+.

but i'm still not sure if i have saved/re-saved everything i need for those 2 versions to be reinstalled in case i need it - for the sake of 3dl, but also just anyway.

what is scene builder anyway? and what "plugins that need to be saved" are meant?? i understand the concept of some plugins - especially from daz - being specific for each version, but i have no idea what/where they are nor what they're called...

i suck at tech tutorials and understanding comments/posts, my focus isn't the best - see my sig - so this whole thing with 3dl, that i only noticed a few days ago btw even i open the daz site every day, (and this made me also realize that i actually barely made saves to reinstall DS, especially with my special needs), is an absolute nightmare :/

A good start with "plugins that need to be saved" are

    1. Measure Metrics for Daz Studio (your version)
    2. GoZ for Daz Studio (your version)
    3. Dynamic Clothing Control for Daz Studio (your version)
    4. Photoshop Bridge for Daz Studio (your version)

For those of us who update when updates arrive, we see roughly the same group of plugins that are updated with the application.

    DAZStudio_4.24.0.3_Win64.exe

    MD5 checksum value: ae254f3fc8e7aee5673d3ad4c90caf09

This is what I'm seeing for the manual download of 4.24 from the product library.  If someone has a moment, could you verify the MD5 matches your own download please?  Thanks!

If you look at the filter text given in https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/9400371/#Comment_9400371 , the numbers after sku:: are the SKUs (product numbers) of the things that need to be backed up.

Scene Builder is the tool that you can use to build a scene up from multiple-choice options - it can have custom recipes created but I havent seen many. It isn't required for anything but itself, as far as I know.'

thanks a lot Richard. i had read the original post from @DoctorJellybean , but couldn't make any sense of it, especially not that huge string/filter. now i gave it in DIm, and only 3 products showed:

measure metrics - and it's really, really weird because afaik i didn't update it with other items today, i didn't even see it in products to update - and when i look at both the info from the pull downs in DIM AND in my dim downloads (the zips) .. the date is dec 28th 2025. how is that even possible. i'll check later in DS 4.22 if it actually works, otherwise i'm a bit scr**ed with that one... still i'll make a copy of that one.

postgreSQL - but it's 0 byte and i see no files in DIM nor in my zips downloads

and daz studio 4.24 - however i'm absolutely certain that my version is 4.22 from the "about" and the start splash...

thanks a lot @nemesis10 ! so.. i found measure metrics, but somehow it says it's been installed today, NO IDEA why/how. let's hope whatever version is installed actually works with my 4.22 or i'm toast. EDIT: well bad luck, now it doesn't work neither in 4.22 beta nor in 4.11 any more. i have no idea why it updated at some point, apparently today. i DID update some products, but not this one, it wasn't even in the DIM list. not that i use it much but still, i paid for it. if i'm really, really lucky i might find an older zip on a usb or sth (i had to move out DIM install zips from my HD cuz no room left)...

i can't find "GOZ" in dim or my downloads... EDIT: i didn't know what it was, checked, and i don't have/use zbrush so it doesn't matter.

i don't have dynamic control - but i have FIT CONTROL for g3 + g8, so i'll save those and won't update them any more

i never use the PS bridge because i don't even have PS, i use gimp.

Richard and everyone thanks for this heads up and the sharing. Seeking answers to a few things . . .

    1. Is there a way to filter for products DIM does not download? Inactive seems to work a bit but not the word manual. I do know how to filter DIM download queries but what is the easiest way to find the parts of a Daz 3D purchase, that DIM leaves behind?

    2. The reason I as is when a product is updated for meta data or for other issues, the readme is not always showing an update. I am thinking (see the smoke?) the entire package of zips are updated. If that is the case and only half the package is downloaded by DIM then maybe I should pay attention those updates in DIM and go snag the manual downloads? Would you have any advice on a easy solution?

    3. Relating to the above an example. Anilip2 was released and purchased and manually downloaded by me on 2019-01-07. It was updated for resolved issues on 2019-03-12 for among other things config files, and updated again on 2021-01-13 for revised rules and expanded languages etc. The product has 4 download files. Two, the content and tutorial, are both DIM Downloads but the executable programs are manual downloads. Would all 4 of those files be updated as a package or just the affected zips.

    4. Do manual downloads ever get updated? Do templates zips ever get updated? Is there a way to identify such or do I have to meander each leaf/item of each product/branch and each tree/order in the library forest?

If you are online then DIM will show the version on the servers, regardless of which package you have (and if they differ it will show them as updates).  If you work offline it will show the file versions you actually have (so you have to be working offline to install an older version, having copied the back up into the DIM downloads folder).

If you are not seeing some of the packages, make sure they aren't hidden.

Is it PostgreSQL you are seeing or the Valentina to PostgreSQL conversion tool? That did its work as it was "installing" and didn't actually install fiels as such, so it might well appear as a 0 byte package.

Well, for a product that has no DIMmable parts https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/557867/#Comment_557867 should help - but it doesn't seem to work as described at the moment.

In the past packages have not always been updated for purely metadata changes - so in those cases using daz Connect might give different results from DIM. I am not sure if that is still true, however.

    3. Relating to the above an example. Anilip2 was released and purchased and manually downloaded by me on 2019-01-07. Only affected zips would usually be updated, but as far as I know this would not be a product changed by the 3Delight removal or updated aplication package.

    4. Do manual downloads ever get updated? Do templates zips ever get updated? Is there a way to identify such or do I have to meander each leaf/item of each product/branch and each tree/order in the library forest?

The manual doewnloads are, as far as I know, the same as the DIM downloads where they exist in both; manual-only stuff may or may not get updated, I doubt if templates often need it.

so... i think i managed to find and copy in a separate folder what is probably the install files for my 4.22 public build beta, since i usually keep the install files, and i had them in my DIM download folder. ofc, impossible to download from daz any old beta versions, so i'm not sure if this is enough, like i couldn't find the scene builder for 4.22 in my downloaded DIM files. i have an update for it that i can see in DIM but it's for 4.23+.
think and probably being the operative words... i vaguely get the whole concept, makes sense, the details much less...

i also downloaded from the daz site the most recent version i.e.

That did its work as it was "installing" and didn't actually install fiels as such, so it might well appear as a 0 byte package.

oh. now that was a really useful bit of information! i had no clue items could show differently off/online! and i naturally had no clue either you have to be offline to install older/other versions. thank you so much!

i checked both, hidden/unhidden. i don't know of that means that i actually have no other plugins. which is weird because as i checked before if measure metrics works, i had the idea to check thsi place i almost never open, the "about plugins", and there are quite a lot. probably most coming with DS, apart from LAMH, measure metrics (FAIL) and a few others..

EDIT: i found most SKU from the list, and it's perfectly normal that i don't see them in my DIM - these are either products i didn't purchase, or plugins i never use/install (goz+ps bridge). apart from 16773, can't find what it is and the doc center page fails when i click on a sku range. but i guess i don't have it... exception is figure metrics sku 16684 which i see.

ah yes, i saw the word valentina i think. so at least 1 normal case.

while Postgre and smart content doesn't work on my Win10 PC, I doubt it's because of having multiple versions of DAZ studio in their own discreet folders

simply because I have multiple versions also on my Win7 and Postgre and smart content works fine there

that is a separate Microsoft security issue, I have given up on after trying everything suggested by multiple people on multiple threads, it just got to a point that trying to fix it was more stressful than adapting to it

it played up after I had my C drive replaced

I take it this will also mean DS 2 and 3 will no longer be available.

Been using DS since 1.3, sad to say but 4.24.0.3 will be my last version of Studio, no use for Filament, and Iray is crap imho, can't even handle an Alpha channel without having to jump through hoops.

DS versions 1, 2 and 3 (final release versions) are still showing in my product library - I suspect that they will go away before the end of the month as they are all 3DL.

I have copies of all downloaded quite a while ago but never used; TBH I wouldn't be surprized to find the installers won't work on current systems.

I doubt you will be unable to download previous purchases due to DAZ no longer having the licence. I believe it means they can not distribute it to new users, but can still give old copies to existing customers. As such I expect 1-3 to remain available to download for all of us that own them.

No, they cannot distribute it to anyone as I understand  it - hence everyone losing 3delight in DS 4.

Well, for a product that has no DIMmable parts https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/557867/#Comment_557867 should help - but it doesn't seem to work as described at the moment.

Thank you for all of the answers you posted. I tried that once upon a time and it did not work. I'll make a note of it in case they revive the filter. Maybe I'll try something similar. There has to be an easier way . . . Thanks again.

I suspect you are right because I too have multiple versions on two windows 10 machines in discreet folders and smart content works on all of them. I created and renamed shortcuts to a bunch of them. I opened Version 4.10. just because it was an old beta oops was not a beta, and searched for centaurs by highest sku and as you can see it pulled up centaur 9s in smart content.

    ...losing 3DL in DS4?

Don't you mean DS5 or whatever the new version will be called?

I wonder if we're gonna see an uptick in new Filament products. There's definitely gonna be a market for them, because Iray is not going to suit everyone's tastes.

No, Richard means DS4 (though it's not included in DS2025 either). The version of DS4 which will be released today won't have 3DL anymore, hence why Daz suggests to backup the current version.

Just for clarification, at the end of the year, no version of Daz Studio that can render 3DL (4.XXX or 6.XXX) will be downloadable.  If you have a version that does render 3DL (as we all should right now), you must save a copy because if and when you have a catastrophic crash, you can not download a new copy.

That also includes 3.xx, 2.xx and 1.xx if you have them in your product library now; I expect them to go away no later tha the 31st.
