Fitting hair with hats

I've become convinced that it's incredibly difficult to think of fitting hair under hats.

I've found two products that help:

SY Hat and hair helper. (I figured out how to use it). https://www.daz3d.com/sy-hat-and-hair-helper-genesis-8

I'm doing a few renders based on A Christmas Carol. M3D Victorian hair helps a lot. https://www.daz3d.com/m3d-victorian-hair-facial-hair-hats-and-aging-for-genesis-81-male

I love M3D's product because it provided some great balding hairstyles to go with the Victorian headgear.

    There is another product that might help: mcjHatsAreTheFashionOfTheDay. It's a little involved to setup but then it's a freebie and there are instructions on that page.

    I have only used it once tho and so not sure how it would compare to Sickleyield's version.

    I have all such helpers but MCasual's mcjHatsAreTheFashionOfTheDay is the best one I've ever used for the cases of fitting hairs to hats. However, it doesn't work on SBHs.

    Thanks for the info.

    In the end, I think it's easier just to find a hairstyle that fits under the hat.

    That's why I like the M3D products listed above.

  • When all else fails, I use layered images and cut away around the topmost hat/hood.

    Depending on the hat and hair....

    I render one main image with the hair poking through the hat/hood and then use the Spot Render tool and make a smaller render [Tool settings Open in New Window] of the head wearing the hat without any hair.

    So now I have a smaller image of the full hat sitting on the character's bald head. Once that image laid on top, I erase the area around the hat-  and the hair underneath comes back into the image.

    Griffin Avid, I am incredibly lazy and easily bewildered.

    There's no way I could do all that work trying to fix the hat and hair. Kudos to you for your efforts.

    I was going to test it today, but the 10+ years old system drive on my render pc finally died this morning, so it will take a few days before I'm up running again.

    Taoz, you have my sympathy.

    My computer is almost in pieces and it's only 6 years old.

    I replaced the NVME (boot) disc, and ripped apart most of the insides in the process.

    Yes it's easy to destroy hardware, I've learned that the hard way.  Many things that you can do wrong. 

    Anyway, I have tested the hat/hair tool now.  It has two methods for fitting the hair, a simple one and a more advanced one, I've only tried the simple one so far.  It's not easy to see what you're doing  here when positioning the cube/sphere/cylinder that masks the part of the hair you want to hide, as you can't move the figure around.  So I had to repeat and adjust four times and it takes several minutes each time to create/modify the hair morph.  But here's the result.  Looks pretty OK, but not perfect if you go into details, but then, it's probably not the easiest hair to fit to a hat.  

    I'll experiment with the other method later, here you work directly with the hair by selecting the vertices you want to hide, which is more complex but also gives more control over the details I guess.  

    Also, as far as I can see it only works with mesh hairs, not strand based hairs.

    No worries, I'm currently testing a lot of my recent purchases, and I need that one for a project I'm working on anyway.
