shape preset: what does it do and what not?

Reading the Dial Fusion description I come across: "...Dial Fusion also remembers the figure's scale, which a shape preset doesn't."

This explains something, I saved quite a few variations on work in progress characters when I suddenly notices a character was a different height then what I saved in a subset.

So what exaclty are shape presets supposed to do, and what not?

They save setting for parameters which appear in the shaping tab, and only those.
Scale is a "posing" parameter not "shaping" so it doesn't get saved.

A Shaping preset saves properties with the type Modifier/Shape. If you want to add other types use a Properties preset, which has tabs for different types of property that can be enabled and disabled.

So if I want to start with a base genesis and end up with a character I morphed together in another instance I need a shape preset *and* a properties set.

So Dial Fusion solves all that, it seems.

A Properties preset can save shaping and posing properties - it can't load a new item, however, the way a Character oe Wearables preset can.
