BJ Shelf (Commercial)

Soon (ish) in the store.

The BJ Shelf plugin provides a way to store 3 types of items: presets from Content Library, folders from Content Library and properties (morphs etc.) from the Parameters pane. Organize these shelf items into tabs of your choice.

Preset shelf items load the preset on click (Ctrl-click navigates to the folder that has the preset instead). Folder shelf items navigate to the folder in Content Library. Property shelf items navigate to the property in the Parameters pane. Drag and drop makes it easy to add, move or reorder shelf items.

Tabs can be aligned on all sides. Shelf items flow freely inside of the available space so you can dock the plugin anywhere and go for a horizontal or vertical layout.

I had the privilege of helping test BJ Shelf during development. I absolutely LOVE it! I have mine docked below the viewport, where I can see a wide Shelf.

Don't underestimate the power of being able to access the item's containing folder in the Content Library, with Ctrl-click on the Shelf item's thumbnail. For example, I put the LowPi character in my Shelf. A single click on his thumbnail loads him into my scene. Ctrl-click gives me immediate access to the entire "LM Low Poly Person" folder in the content Library, where I can expand the folder to access clothing, hair, props, etc. for LowPi. To make it even handier, I added one LowPi clothing item, one hair item, one pose item, so I can Ctrl-click them and get direct access to each containing folder. This is not limited to LowPi, of course. It is just an example of something I frequently access.

The thumbnail names in the Shelf are elided to make the thumbnail positioning compact, to get lots of items on the shelf. Hovering over the thumbnail will show the full name. But most single asset thumbnails are instantly recognizable for me, without needing to even read their names. TIP: Folders can be added to the shelf, but they have a generic folder thumbnail. I prefer to add my single most used asset from that folder to my Shelf instead, to get a nice item thumbnail, and then Ctrl-click it to access the folder in the Content Library.

I also find the feature to backup (export) and restore (import) Shelf configurations to be very useful. I can export my Shelf configuration to a file, so I can restore a particular Shelf configuration if I accidentally mess it up. I can also export different configurations (giving them different file names) and import the one I want to use at a particular time, for the work I am doing at the time.

BJ Shelf rivals BJ Camera Manager for my most used used Daz Studio plugin. I use both throughout every Daz Studio session. They are amazingly helpful. (Yes, I am a fan girl.)

Aww thanks so much for the praise and all the help. I didn't know it was even rivalling Camera Manager for you smiley

I prefer this too now. It's pretty cool to have both loading the preset and navigating to the containing folder in one. Also my brain does better with remembering items than folders. I have some folders in a separate tab but don't use it much.

As user examples, here are two of my BJ Shelf Tabs, Utilities and LowPi.(They look small here, because I had to scale them down for the forum. Click on them to open them full size, it you are interested in the details.

Oh wow! This looks so useful for someone who mainly uses smart content and hates navigating the content library folders. If I could just teleport to the ones I use the most with one click... A game changer.

Looking forward to seeing it in the store!

This looks AMAZING!  I'm afraid to ask this, but I'll give it a try - will this only work on "official" Daz products, or can I use this on my Renderosity stuff too?  Also, what about stuff in the Poser folders, can it find those?  Even if not, this will be soooooo helpful!  I have wanted to be able to quickly go straight to a folder for forever ^_^

  • barbultbarbult Posts: 26,156

bluejaunte would have to give you the official answer to these questions, but this is my user experience:

BJ Shelf is not only for "official" Daz products, If your Renderosity stuff is in one of your Content Directories in the Daz Studio Formats section of the Content Library, it should work. It even works on content you create yourself, as long as it is saved in one of those Content Directories. I don't think I have ever tried anything ancient, though (like the old .daz files from a decade ago).

There is only very limited Poser content support, as far as I see. I have been able to add Poser assets (single items, like an old hair item or an old pose item, BUT, the convenient Ctrl+Click to go to the containing folder does not work for any Poser item I have tried. Likewise, you can add a Poser Formats folder to the Shelf, but clicking on it will not open the folder in the Poser Formats section of the Content Library. Clicking the folder does nothing.

In my opinion, the best way to go straight to a folder of the Content Library from BJ Shelf, is to add one recognizable item from that folder to the BJ Shelf, rather than adding the folder itself. Then when you want to access the folder, Ctrl+Click on that asset thumbnail in the BJ Shelf. There are two advantages to doing it this way. 1) you have direct access to one of your most used items from the folder 2) You have a nice recognizable thumbnail for what is in the folder, instead of a blank folder thumbnail, and can still access the folder with a single click by holding the Ctrl key while clicking.

Yeah anything under "Daz Studio Formats" in the Content Library is supported. Renderosity content installs their too. Really everything these days. Items from Products and Categories views can be added but if you navigate back to them you will go to the actual content library folder.  "Poser Formats" is not supported.

Oh wow, that is FANTASTIC news!!!  I have a bunch of stuff from other sites that I would love to use this on!  And that's fine about the Poser stuff, I really wasn't expecting it to work with that, but I thought I'd ask just in case.  And that's great to know about the folder system, about the thumbnail for what's in the folder, I hadn't thought of that.  Thank you, bluejaunte and barbult, for answering my questions! ^_^

Just one warning: I may be wrong but I'm under the impression that you're using a Mac and the plugin is available only for Windows.

Oh no!!!  Is it Windows only?  Rats, that's unfortunate :(   Oh well, that's just the way things go, it seems a lot of the really cool stuff is only for Windows.

See if Totte has time to collaborate with you, He has written a plugin that works on Mac. He is sort of the Mac guru around here.

Could this be used as a replacement for the sadly abandoned Visual Menus by Bitwelder?

I think it would be a good substitute, if for some reason you can't use Visual Menus. Visual Menus still work fine for me in DS 4.24. Of course they don't work in DS 6 Alpha, though. But then neither does BJ Shelf currently.

Visual Menus work under 4.24 but you can not add new links. You have to open 4.23 or an older version to do so.  But that's a story for another thread.

I just tried adding a link for the Biship 9 HD character to a button in an existing Virtual Menu, and it worked fine. What kind of links don't work for you?

    Content  Library Bookmarks.

Oh, fwiw: I gave the BJ Shelf a try and it is perfectly usable in place of Visual Menus.

Only problem: I have 19 thematically sorted 9x9 VMs which are filled to the brim. Gonna take some time to add all these items and folder to BJ Shelf. :-P

Is there an intention to update this to support DS 2025 at some point in the future?

adding link to here for folks to find more infor later.

I was able to add the tab on the bottom like @barbult suggested on my Windows 11 laptop, but I am fuzzy brain on what next to do. It doesn't help I have a migraine. Really wish you could have done a Mac version as well. But I still bought it.

For starters you can simply drag and drop a preset from content library into the plugin. Check manual after migraine. Or even just this promo honestly, it's all you need to know smiley
