Cleaning up broken references

Joe.CotterJoe.Cotter Posts: 3,362

Trying to get rid of RSL shaders as I never use them and they only clutter up my trying to find things I do use... of course ended up getting broken refererences, but the way I used to clean up broken references no longer works. Does someone know how to do this in the new version of DAZ?

Find them in the Content Library pane, right-click>Remove Reference

There is no "remove reference" under the content library pane. Also, do I have to remove them one by one? That's thousands of references.

Search them in Content Library -> Products <-- only there you can remove the references.

    Or
From Smart Content pane: right-click the broken reference -> Show Asset in -> Content Library > Products
From Content Library pane: right-click the broken reference -> Show Asset in -> Products.
And you're there where you can remove the reference.

That is where the picture above is taken from.... I right clicked on material reference in surfaces pane, selected "Show Asset In / Content Library -> Products" which brought me to where I was looking to remove the broken reference, and where I took screen capture from.  No remove reference option. I posted the picture so people could very clearly see, it's not there. Daz version 4.24.03

I'm posting an updated image to show more clearly where I am attemting to do this from and what I'm getting as a menu when I right click on the broken reference. This is what I don't understand...

    How did you install?

For DS 2025, search for hide on http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/6/change_log (the first fully useful  entry is under the public Alpha heading)

The only thing I see there are API calls, which are useless to me since the only scripting I've done is basic and that is pretty involved. So is there no way to remove broken references in this version of DAZ?

Why do you have two products of Badlands Gladiator Outfit for Genesis 8 Male(s) in the product list ... ?  What are there in another one with the very same name ? And how did you delete RSL material preset files ?

I would suggest you delete one of the duplicated products (bad one or wrong one, or cloud one, or whatever... Check it beforehand ~~), then retry ~~

I should have expanded the title section so you would see that's not the problem. They are totally separate things. The second is a converted one for G9. The textures are in the original product and it still does not have that option available for me. Have you checked your DAZ version? I suspect it may be different than mine. As to deleting them, you simply right click on the 3Dlight folder in the content folder of the product and select delete. Not in the product section, in the "DAZ Content Library." And yes, I've done this before with no problem which makes me think it is something they changed in the newer version of DAZ. I don't see an option to install an earlier version of DAZ either. If it's not available, it goes against industry standards for exactly this type of reason, if that is the case. In general, I like this version... however, I would like to be able to run two different versions (not active at the same time of course) so that if there are any issues with the newer one I can fire up the older one, but that is getting sidetracked from the current issue, which is..

What exactly is stopping me from deleting the references, and is there a way to do it.

    Ok, soo.....

I restarted DAZ "again" and the menu item showed up. It isn't a version issue, and yes, I did restart DAZ when it first showed up and even restarted the machine, but that didn't fix it... In a "what the heck... let's try restaring it again" random act.... it worked. I still don't know what caused the issue for sure, but I can say that I was converting wardrobe items for the last day and a half with RSSY scripts and it would crash on certain items pretty regularly. I guess it just took a couple restarts to clear out some things that had cropped up that I hadn't realized.

Lesson seems to be, if restarting it doesn't work and nothing else seems to work, try restarting again "just in case."

Thank you everyone for your help. I'm sure it was as baffling to some (hopefully not as frustrating) as it was to me and I appreciate the time you took to look at the issue with me.

    Woop... nope...

Was wrong... that menu showed up when I right clicked on an object, not a texture. When I went back and tried to delete reference on a texture it wasn't there. So, has anyone tried removing a broken reference to a "texture" that is no longer there?

and... double checked your image crosswind and you were doing a material at the time, so that is available. I am still curious about your version of DAZ since strangely it's available for objects but not materials on my computer. Also, how did you delete that material that you show the broken reference for? I could have sword I did it for materials in the past doing exactly this, which is part of what is baffling me. I'm not sure if I'm misremembering since it's been a while, (been gone from DAZ for some years...) or if something changed.

Oh, it sounds like that you converted something by using RiverSoftArt's converters, if so, that shouldn't be the culprit ....

I used to do the very same thing of deleting 3Delight presets in the same way... and I'm using 4.24.0.3 as you do. I checked 2025 as well, it worked as expected.

I'm not able to reproduce the issue you have... Can you find "Remove Reference" on other normal thumbnails ?

Besides, maybe you can try: re-install this product, delete 3Delight folder again, then check if "Remove Ref." is back ~~

I had checked before but just double checked... It's the same for all materials in any product, including ones I haven't done anything with other than installing the product. Am trying reinstall of product now.

... and, no... still no option to delete reference

Ok, so 4.23.04 is not 2025... can both be installed on one machine where they access the same library? (Assume if the first part is true, the second would be.) Also, is there some way to get the database to look for and delete orphaned refrences?

I did have and test out Advanced Material Converter but ended up returning and removing it. Could that have anything to do with it? Also, I do use RSSY 3DLight to Iray converter, but this product already had IRay materials obviously so didn't use it on this product, and as I mentioned, the issue is on all materials, IRAY, 3DLight, original ones on fresh install....

What is weird is that it is specfic to materials but doesn't seem to effect other items like objects.

Ah, if so, I suppose you're using DS 4.24.0.3 General Release, is that correct ? I myself always use the latest DS Public Build but keep using DS General Release which is one version older.

Well, you maybe can install a DS 4.24.0.3 Public Build, see if there's any difference ?

Besides, what is odd is that you just see no Remove Ref. on all material presets ... What about other presets?

I just checked Properties and Lights presets and it's not available there either. DAZ doesn't offer a way to download the public build do they? I installed the only version available in the DIM. Also, I would like to be able to load any other version separately if I can so I don't risk breaking something else by installing a different version on top of the current one.

You need to firstly order Public Build in here:https://www.daz3d.com/daz-studio-beta

Using both GR and PB versions is a very good practice。。。

So you run them both on the same machine?

Also, I'm showing both 4.5+ and 2025 but I don't see a way to install 2025. I tried to search for it but it doesn't show up in DIM

Ok, another wrinkle... I noticed that "props" in some (most it seems) folders do not have "remove reference" available in the menu. They also only have "copy" and not "cut". In some, like "Bedu Desert Warrior" props have both "cut" and "remove reference," so whatever is effecting the one seems to also be effecting the other.

    Yea, already tried that.. nothing.

Woops, good thing I always double check (habit from career programming..) I had "Publishing Build" and "Private Build" checked, but not "Public Build"

Hmm, very odd... I'll check if I could reproduce...

Have you placed the order for Beta version?

If I download and install the public build, it will install to a different path than the regular build? Or do you have to change the path for DAZ in the DIM to reflect a different path before downloading and installing?

You evidently were responding while I was editing my previous response and missed it... I found it ^^ .. Now want to make sure I'm not going to overwrite my current version.

No worry, Public Build is installed in its designated folder, ie C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4 Public Build

  • Joe.CotterJoe.Cotter Posts: 3,362

So then it is installed in separate folder and won't overwrite the current DAZ install. Tyvm for all the help :)

No, it won't.  I have Daz Studio 4.21 and Daz Studio 4.24 Public Build installed on the same computer.

Let me clarify my earlier post.  It should have been "I have Daz Studio 4.21 and Daz Studio 4.24 Public Build installed on the same computer."
