'Good enough' Iray settings for a laptop?

Hello again!
Got my database in the right spot and my installer working good. So now the big questions.
I have a laptop...it's a good laptop but ot the most topt of the line. it has a Intel i7 and a nVdia RTX 2060.
I'd love to have those beautifull super real renders, but at the same time I dont want my laptop to melt into a puddle of lava, or burn out the graphics card.
What are some good 'mid' or middle of the road rendeing options for iRay...I mean it looks amazing but...it takes a lng time.

If anyone has any settings they would love to share I'm all ears. (...also where did 'render preview' go?)

    I have an MSI gaming laptop - 16 GB, i7 10750H cpu, and rtx 2070 8 GB

This is my web surfing system and part-time studio system. I tend to do smaller size renders (large side 1920 or smaller); the cooling on this system isn't the greatest, so I picked up a Topmate C11 cooling pad. It helps quite a bit. Note - I keep the pad flat, with the laptop on it when I render. There are other coolers available - look around and check thhe reviews; mine is two years old.

@valis_cf78772845 - I too have a laptop with Windows 10 Pro, an Intel i7 processor, 16 Gb RAM, and an RTX 2060 with 6 Gb VRAM.  Iray Preview can be a beast to work with on a modest system.  I’m a dabbler/hobbyist with a modest system so I have to be mindful of as many tools as possible to get scenes to hopefully display in Iray Preview mode and render in Iray without bringing my system to its knees or crashing it altogether.  To help with that, over the years I have bought (only on sale though!)

    Scene Optimizer (https://www.daz3d.com/scene-optimizer)

    Placeholder Manager (https://www.daz3d.com/placeholder-manager)

    Camera View Optimizer (https://www.daz3d.com/camera-view-optimizer)

    Render Throttle for Iray (https://www.daz3d.com/render-throttle-for-iray)

    Decimator for DAZ Studio (https://www.daz3d.com/decimator-for-daz-studio)

Resource Saver Shaders Collection for Iray (https://www.daz3d.com/resource-saver-shaders-collection-for-iray)

and a few others.  Good luck and have fun!

Everything put above, plus a little emphasis on patience.

Overnights renders are fine and won't melt your machine (the cooler pad is a good idea... but it is anyway for a notebook without plenty of exhaust fans, even for gaming etc  https://www.techradar.com/news/best-laptop-cooling-pad).

I have an ASUS F15 with an 8gb RTX3070 - I have done 12 hour v complex renders (6 characters, complex set etc) using much of the kit jjoyner lists and the machine survives just fine. Once upon a time I had "intel graphics" only (in a potato) and 32 hour renders weren't uncommon (and that machine still makes a decent "netbook").

Your rig will be fine if you study-up on the kit and techniques to make scenes viable in the VRAM you have (Scene Optimiser plus rendering "background only" and a "character-only" shots and layering in gimp). I'd put that you can reproduce some of the glorious things you see in gallery here and elsewhere, but I'm neglecting to mention the amount of learning you'll need to do to get to that level. However, even with just a little learning and a lot of patience, render-while-you-sleep will amaze you smiley

Two items that I forgot to mention earlier are using HDRIs and billboards.

    1. Using HDRI for background (and lighting) can be very helpful in saving GPU (or CPU) resources.  There are many in the DAZ3D store but there are also many free ones on other sites for HDRIs.  You can even make your own using assets that you have plus a 2D image editor such as GIMP, Photoshop, Paintshop Pro etc., or by using assets that you own plus a product in the DAZ3D store called V3D HDR Creator (https://www.daz3d.com/v3d-hdr-creator).  Wait  until it or its bundle are on sale though.

Jay Versluis (The WP Guru) recorded a lengthy tutorial for DAZ3D on creating HDRIs in Daz Studio.  It’s at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1iQuMvXdqE&list=PLF3LSR7D48MfLu1beMSxJ2O8j8FHpOY9f&index=7 .

    2.  There are billboards in the DAZ3D store but again, you can make them yourself using your own assets plus a 2D image editor or by using assets that you own plus a product in the DAZ3D store called Billboard Builder (https://www.daz3d.com/billboard-builder).  Once again, The WP Guru has a YouTube video on each method:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuxHRcebHn0 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvKw5PQfXy4 .

And, yes, as @kpr mentions, have patience to learn, makes mistakes, and learn from them.
