They have it already Richard, I saw already new computers with Windows 10 , the early people that subscribed will get it first then following the next wave

the same conversation was with win8 and for me was working just fine , you scared from Big brother ? the moment you connect to Internet your activity are monitored  with each page view and download .. you can't hide lol

I am going to install it the moment I get it on my PC workstation and if happy about following installation my other laptops  .. can't wait for DirectX 12 to see the improvements , my titan babies are ready for the challenge laugh

I was under the impression that we, the end user would NOT be getting the upgrade right away, that these upgrades were to first go out to those that build computers to include in their new computer sales and then from there they would start putting the user upgrades out but not all at once..... can't remember where I read that but I did read it....

Me afraid of Big Brother?  Naw, I'm quite aware of their presense in just about every aspect of our daily lives.  Being HIV POZ I know my status and health info is available to just about any doctor out there with permissions.  So why not what I do on line or what I say on the phone.  Pure privacy would only occur if you lived i n a cave with none of the aforementioned tech.  I'm cool.   I just don't want to have zero choice of when the update happens so I have time to prepare, like deauthorizing ZB, PS and iTunes, backing up what needs backing up, etc......

Also, if we end-up getting screwed by a bad upgrade such as the one that happened late last year. That update forced my Windows 7 to use older drivers. Then it was slow as... well... it was slow; and I was one of the lucky ones, many couldn't even get into their Windows OS because it kept giving them a BSOD at boot up.

They did it again. This week I'm dodging t-storms so don't do much rendering at all letalone anything in iray that takes a long time. Today about noon (I'd be radar watching a couple hours from then anyway) surprise! I heard close thunder. So I went to turn of my pc (I don't want any harddrive activity during any kind of surge and we're in a high strike area--including my building which has been struck by lightning four times I know of).

Whaddya know but the little exclamation mark was there on the 'Shut Down' button. So I went to Window Updates and unchecked the win update that had come in. okay'ed out and went back to shut down. The checkmark was still there. Thought just maybe it hadn't cleared itself yet so hit shutdown and the message comes up 'Don't power off your machine' while it was 'installing updates'.

When lightning is close I have NO CHOICE about whether to power off or not. Too often lightning hitting a nearby transformer will do that for me.

    Pfeh.

Me being a gamer, Direct x 12 sounds especially exciting!

Although I assume it will take a while before any games that I might be interested in come out that would take full advantage of DX12.

    But still, I´m excited.

I'm not a gamer (not that I don't want to be, just that studio and reading take up all my time) but I'm kinda excited about Win10 myself. I went back to Windows Update after I restarted my pc later and there's a big graphic about win10 there now. I had cancelled my reservation and guess they got my cancellation. Maybe I'll press that button in another week or so.

Well, here we are, it's the 29th, the fabled 10 day has arrived. Anyone got it yet, or hasn't it gone fully live yet? I'm still in 'wait and see' mode. One thing I have noticed is that the little window icon has disappeared from my taskbar, however, Windows Update is still telling me to reserve my copy.

Let us know how you all go

It should be out in like 3 hours I think in all countries.

Or maybe even earlier, not sure now.

Please be advised, that as of Yesterday, there were some significant driver issues, especially with NVIDIA cards. I know Microsoft has been scrambling to get those resolved but I am not sure that has happened yet.

If you must have Windows 10 now, here is the link:

Looks as if 10 is right out for me as neither the Home or Pro version allows one to completely turn off auto updating or reject updates (particularly useful when one doesn't use features or hardware updates are targeted for).  To get the Enterprivse version (the only one which will allow you full control over updating like all versions of 7 and 8.1 currently allow), you must be a company that is registered with MS's Software Assurance Programme.

I just read that "Only Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users will be able to defer updates." So if you have Windows 7 Pro you will still have the ability to defer updates when you are updated to Windows 10 Pro.

Is DirectX 12 coming out with Win10, or does that happen later?

  • RogerbeeRogerbee Posts: 4,460

I thought it came with it.

Supposedly DirectX 12 should speed up GPU renders... I think? Anyone notice a difference? Or am I misunderstanding?

we have a year to upgrade for free. I'm waiting it out :) Cept on my tablet, I'll upgrade that when I get a bit of time. Not gonna risk my PC when I'm very busy and don't have time to fix things that are currently working.

DirectX 12 might well speed DirectX rendering, but it would not affect OpenGL/CUDA rendering.

Is there a way to check to see if one's system is beginning the download process?  My little Windows icon in the task bar isn't showing me that info...

    Thanks!

Me too, and there was a mini-update queued last night when I shut down for the night — I checked, and it was yet another version of the 10 nag update.

I am using Windows 10 pro now. The only problem installing was it installed windows basic video

driver instead of the nvidia driver, and only used one of my dual monitors. A simple update driver

solved the problem easily and both monitors are working with the nvidia driver.

I used Start8 on windows 8.1 and I should have removed it before I updated, as it does work in Windows

10 even though Stardock said it won't work, and I wanted to use the Win 10 start menu.

I downloaded the iso file and did the upgrade with that, with no problems except those stated above.

Daz 4.8 seems to work fine with WIn 10, as does Chrome and Firefox. I have'nt tried to many other

    programs yet.

I think onedrive is on automatically, which I don't want. I don't want my files posted on the internet, and I'm

trying to figure out how to delete one drive.

So far I like what I see in Win 10.

Mec: try https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 to get the media creation tool

I downloaded it in a few minutes at 85mbs and burned an iso and installed with no real problems.

    ...I'm running Win7 Home.

The WIn10 compatibility check said my rig was OK but that may not necessarily relate to software and some drivers.  I needed to switch the compatibility for my trackball driver to XP to get it to work as the model I have isn't available anymore and it is still the most comfortable one I've found for my arthritic wrists and hands.

Well, like i've been saying, it gives me 5 years to learn how to become an IT tech so I can set up and maintain Linux (and hopefully Daz will by then have full Linux support)

Okay, so Win10 has been checked over, and thus far the bloodbath hasn't been as bad as I thought it might be. The only major piece of software that broke was the Adobe CC suite (it dumped a couple of dlls that Photoshop demands to have), and I'm hoping a reinstall of Photoshop will fix it.

Fixing the 2008-2013 Redists didn't cut it.

  • RogerbeeRogerbee Posts: 4,460

I'm hoping that it likes Photoshop CS2, it's the only version I can and will use. I know I can use a compatibility mode for it but hopefully there won't be any issues.

There had been issues reported with NVidia products, but, I thought they were being worked on. When you guys do get it going, please post some screenshots, I want to see what this looks like, especially if Aero is actually back.

I had to do a clean install of Redist 2012 and Maya, but I have most of my functionality back now. Firefox is dragging its tail a bit, but I expect that'll get fixed sooner rather than later. The WinHate "Metro" interface has been turned into a few odd artifacts, and the new interface is very Aero-like. Traditional Desktop, with the clean-edged windowsand the ability to alt-tab through things more or less at will.
