    Ok, sounds good so far,

Be interesting to see what it makes of DS.

Firefox is dragging its tail a bit, but I expect that'll get fixed sooner rather than later.

Are you running the 32-bit version of Firefox? That version blows, even in Windows 7. The version that I use is CyberFox 64-bit. A close second would be WaterFox 64-bit.

Forget the 64-bit Developer Edition by Mozilla. That thing is not ready for primetime.

Mmm, not heard of Cyberfox, I do use Waterfox though and I really like it. That will be Edge's main competition.

The only reason that I use CyberFox is that they apply updates faster. WaterFox is indeed faster on my system, but not by much.

Oh, so, really, if I'm already used to Waterfox, I'm not really going to notice that much difference. If that's the case I won't bother with it.

I installed Win10 yesterday and had no problems with any software that I have used since. Some of those are DS 4.8, Photoshop 6 cs, Chrome, Itunes etc... I had a single issue with my sound driver, but that had resolved itself oddly enough. I was expecting all kinds of problems with the Nvidia drivers but everything seems just fine. Chrome feels a bit slower than usual but meh...

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,084

Took two reboots before the NVIDIA display drivers sorted themselves out (and that's for regular 'looking at my desktop').

Rendered two scenes with no problems.

    Hmm sounding good still,

    What about Aero!?

Waterfox is really nice as far as I'm concerned but certain sites they fail... I had issues on NetFlix using Waterfox but not Firefox.  It's essentially the same browser but something gets broken or something when they recompile the code for 64 bit.. which is what Waterfox is.. the 64 bit version of Firefox.

  • RogerbeeRogerbee Posts: 4,460

I've not had a single issue the entire time I've been using Waterfox, it does everything I want it to, and I can't ask more than that.

Still on the fence about Windows 10 though....

If by Aero, you mean the User Interface with the nice colours and semi-transparent title bars, forget it. 10 is all about flat, quasi-monochrome, inoffensive styling. 10 is boredom incarnate. Window borders are gone and replaced with ridiculous all-round shadows, title bars are white; everything is just dull. And I disagree with the previous comment that Metro has gone. No it hasn't. The Windows 8 Metro-style flat layouts are everywhere, except it's now called a Universal App!

With all of this dullness and lack of graphical magic I am surprised that 10 needs such a powerful graphics card. What the hell is it using it for?

The good news is that DAZ Studio and DIM both work without problems and so does the iRay renderer (on the system I tested). Everything else I have tried has also worked fine - quite a range of apps from recent to very old. They do look a bit ... dull, though, having had their window borders stripped and their title bars whitewashed.

I did notice that 10 doesn't fix the infamous Wi-Fi timeout bug from 8, where some makes of Wi-Fi adapters just switch themselves off and drop the connection if they are not used for a while, regardless of power settings. Nor does 10 fix the irritating behaviour of switching off external hard drives after one tenth of a nanosecond of non-use, so you have to wait for them to spin up every time you want to access a file on them. But it does work and seems to be more stable than I had feared. In fact, in my tests, it has been rock steady.

All of which is really rather boring. sad

Sorry, I forgot to mention ... M$ have decided that your default browser is Edge after the upgrade. Doesn't matter if it was Chrome or Firefox before. Now it's Edge.

OK, you can change it back, but I'm calling that Niggle Number 4.

  • RogerbeeRogerbee Posts: 4,460

    Hmmm,

Not sure I like the sound of that. I suspect there will be an add-on to bring back Aero just like I had for 8. It's not a dealbreaker by any means, but, it was something I got comfortable with. You should, under power settings, be able to do something about that hard drive issue and it's not one that I've ever some across. I go into Control Panel and switch everything to Never. I don't even use screensavers.

.what about Daz 2.3, Daz 3.1 PSPX4 as well as older versions of Adobe CS?

I found CS2 was doing some weird things. The toolbar icons kept disappearing and I'd have to click to get them back. Other than a few glitches though it can still do everything.

  • RogerbeeRogerbee Posts: 4,460

You could always try running it in compatibility mode and see what that does. I rely on CS2. I also know that Vue 10 has to be run in comptibility mode on anything other than 7.

I was underwhelmed with it at first look because it has no plugin support, so there is no possibility of using 1Password. However, since then I have been giving it a test drive and it seems OK. Certainly MUCH quicker then any previous incarnation of Internet Explorer. If you had nothing else, or you didn't want the CPU-hogging side effects of Chrome, then Edge should be up to the task.

    But ... it is DULL!

So far not a problem at all here.  I did however do a clean install after backing everything up to an external drive.  Then I used the MS media creator utility to get the image.  Created a bootable USB drive and after plugging that in and hitting restart I walked away and had lunch.  After lunch I came back to find the OS installed.  After that it was just a matter of tweaking the privacy settings down a bit and restoring my important data and programs from my backup.

Creating the usb drive ( including download) roughly 35 minutes

Actual install ( about an hour maybe 45 min at the outside)

Of note:   MS has apparently fixed the Nvidia issue quite well as not only did the correct driver install but Ihave seen absolutely no issues.  Also, MS has a utility out that will allow you to hide troublesome updates that you had to uninstall from the OS so that they wont be automatically reinstalled.  You can find that here:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930  I would suggest that everyone bookmark that page just in case there is a future issue with an annoying update.  I would also suggest that unless you need it, it might be a good idea to turn off WiFi Sense.  Also, for those not used to using it  OneDrive now turns on at startup by default.

Finally - for now- Microsoft Edge does not yet support extenstion/plug-ins or anything like that.  Just for security, it might be a good idea to use another browser for a bit.  If you use Norton as your security suite, Firefox works very well with Norton360

Pale Moon is another 64 bit variant of Firefox that works pretty well, only thing I have trouble with is Flash driven sites, but I believe that is a general Firefox issue at the moment?

I read the final update is actually 6 GB.. but the great news is that you can never turn off the updates which means that Microsoft gets to add 'features' in the future that may enhance their ability to control the content you come into contact with, unless of course you don't actually log onto the internet.. (yeah right.. how did you post then?)

Having Microsoft owning my operating system and allowing them to add programs and update their proprietary software whenever they want because it would be their right when you consider that you have a 'commercial' license.

With the peer to peer set to allow Microsoft to distribute its updates using your computer, you get to donate your bandwidth to Bill Gates thanks to our dear friends at Microsoft.

Let's see.. allow a huge company the ability to control the software on my computer... no way.

I must keep my own self determination.. I get to control what I put on my computer.. fU ms.. not on any computer I own.

Pale Moon I tried first when I moved away from the 32-bit Mozilla firefox, but they use an older code base and that base has issues with sites like Youtube. Just try and you will see the bugs in action, like when scrolling thru the list of videos.

CyberFox and WaterFox are the best 64-bit version of Firefox out there that I know off, they beat the pants off Mozilla's won Developer Edition. The Developer Edition is so buggy that Mozilla provides updates almost every week.

I did a clean install yesterday and I wanted to share the steps I did:

    1. I manually downloaded the Windows 10 ISO from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and prepared a 4Gb USB flash memory. 60 mins.
    2. I performed a backup of the main 120Gb SDD. I always use Acronis for this. Unaccounted time.
    3. I first installed windows 8 and selected the option to keep nothing. 30 mins.
    4. Immediatelly I activated the copy. 1 min.
    5. Rebooted with the Windows 10 flash memory, I selected to update and keep no data. 30 mins.
    6. I installed the NVIDIA drivers flawlessly.

I always do this, when I'm not satisfied with the results all I do is restore.

Microsoft has always owned the software operating system on the machines - it has never been "the PC owner's".  It has always been a rental agreement that they can change, update etc...any time they choose  :)  That is nothing new, but the jump in social media and frantic spreading of "facts" (which are usually blown out of proportion) has jumped imensley.  Therefore, things that have been happening in the past are suddenly all 'new' because now more people are being made aware via social media and internet communication.  As far as the Peer to Peer - that can be turned off.  :)  Tons of articles online cover it.

That being said - I am hating more and more the hiding and removing of my options to customize the OS myself.  I don't need to be spoonfed. I actually know how to use, troubleshoot and secure my PC.   If Linux ran the software I use on a daily basis, I'd switch.

Liking Cyberfox more than Firefox.  There is something in my set up on Firefox that prevents me from logging into my MS account but on Cyberfox I have no issue at all.  Weird stuff there.  It does indeed seem much faster than FF.  I have Sync set up and it's got all my addons loaded up so it's not those.  Just something in the FF code that's wonky!  I was under the impression this browser is just a recompile of the FF 32 bit but perhaps there's a bit more going on under the hood!  Thanks again for the recommendation.. my new default I think!  laugh

    Just watched this...

If you hate hate hate Windows 10 you CAN roll back to your previous edition as long as it's within 30 days.  Only works for 7/8/8.1
