Linked file missing in project

jwcjaygainesjwcjaygaines Posts: 70
February 2024 in Blender Discussion

So I created a new project and linked (not appended) a model file. I'm not sure what happened, but for some reason, when I opened it again, the model is no longer there. The rig is just a series of empties, and the linked icon next to the widgets is the ripped paper version. In the past when appending, I could just use the command of "Find External Data" and fix it that way. But for some reason, it's not working on a linked item. I right-clicked on the model's hierarchy in the outliner and saw some options like ID Data, but not sure exactly what I'm supposed to do. The original model file may have been accidentally moved or renamed. But it's still there. I know its location and it opens up just fine. So I'm not sure what to do. Normally I'd just restart the project, but the linked model already has all the poses I worked so hard on making, and I don't want to have to redo all that.

If the model is the same then you could relink then copy and paste the poses. If linking breaks it probably means the file changed name or position. Also, if you use multiple drives be sure you save with absolute paths.

I figured it out. I had to change the outliner to show the Blender files, right click on the model's, and then select "Relocate". Issue resolved! :)
