Tutorial regarding HD -> Multires -> Displacement available?

January 2023 in Blender Discussion

I'm still struggling with the newest version of Diffeomorphic and the new intergrated HD Stuff.

When I export a Genesis 8 character (export to Blender), I can do an Easy Daz Import to Blender.
When I use Export HD to Blender, I assumed that I get a HD version of the character (e.g Subdiv 4). Do I have to set the SubDiv Level in Daz before I do the export?
Nevertheless I seem to get a non-HD version of the character. In Blender I can select Make Multires when both meshes are select. I assume that you have to select the hires mesh first.

Just some of the questions I have and I would love to see a walkthrough. I really would love to bake a displacement map afterwards from the multires. For this there are some tutorials available.

Can someone give me a hint? Thanks!

Ok, I tried to import Alexandra 8 HD

Just loaded her into Daz 4.15.0.30 Pro and saved the default scene. Then I exported her with Export HD to Blender and created the DBZ file in the same folder with the same name as the DUF file.

Then I used Easy Import DAZ. This lead to a structure in the outliner, which doesn't fit to the Wiki description in Bitbucket

I get an empty collection for the base mesh and a different one for the HD mesh with geometry.

    So now I'm stuck

The HD information is baked from the viewport so you need to set the viewport subdivision in daz studio to the desired level before exporting. Odd that this is not mentioned in the diffeomorphic documentation.

Thanks a lot. I didn't find this information in the documentation I'll try it.

As I found some time to play with Richard HD for Genesis 8.1, I just wanted to share my workflow and the questions I still have.

First I start Daz Studio and load Richard HD to an empty scene in the default pose.

In the settings the Subdivision Level is set to 3 and the Render SubD Level to 4. The figure consists of the following components, as Richard has separate Eyelashes, Tears and Eyebrows.

After loading Richard, I instantly save the scene to Richard.duf without any changes. Then I use the Export to Blender script to save a Richard.dbz file to the same directory.

In the next step, I raise the Subdivision Level to 4 and save this scene again in the same directory with RichardHD4.duf as file name. I do not export the HD UVs.

As expected, the dbz file for the HD export is much bigger

After using Easy Import DAZ for Richard.duf I get a big structure with a collection

    Richard
    - Richard Meshes
    -- Richard Mesh
    --- Genesis81MaleGeom.001
    --- Modifiers
    --- Vertex Groups
    - Richard
    -- Animation
    -- Pose
    -- Richard
    -- Richard Mesh

I left out the Eyelashes, Tears and Eyebrows.

The second Richard Mesh is kind of greyed out. I wonder what this is?

After that I load the RichardHD4.duf that I previously saved.

As expected I get a new collection with the name Richard4_HD, but also an empty collection Richard4, which is quite confusing. I have no idea what this is for.
The HD Mesh already has a Multires Modifier, which seems to contain no HD information.

In order to bake a Displacement Map, I have to select the normal and the HD mesh, but in what order? I also wonder in which order they should be selected for the Multires Modifier.
Is there any documentation available, how the new HD extension of Diffeomorphic works?

    Thanks for any hint...

You don't need all those steps. Just load the HD then bake.

    steps:

    1. from daz studio export HD
    2. import in blender
    3. save local textures and bake the displacement
    4. apply multires and load the displacement

Ok, this sound reasonable. I'll try it and let you know.
Thanks a lot for your great support!
