Nemesis, I do generate serial numbers. Email me with your problem. [email protected]
If you have an installation issue, I usually offer tech support via Skype.
All is fine. I was using you as an example of how PA's deal withy serial numbers. Your product is support is execellent and has the added benefit that you are still alive.
The poster has a bind because the poster is in one of five states:
There doesn't seem to be a simple solution to the problem
Daz creates the installers, don't they? Couldn't they create a new installer with the correct serial number? Or if the customer could use the original installer on an older Mac and transfer the files through an external drive? Another possibility, get a Windows emulator for the Mac and open the file.

You are getting closer to the problem:
Daz3d may have created the installer a long long time ago (or may not have in this particular case) but that technology is gone. They can't create an installer with the correct serial number since the late PA is the only one who has access to the ability to activate the serial number. The problem with using an older Mac and transferring or a Windows emulator is that the installer writes "invisible" information to the system that doesn't seem to transfer hence the serial number doesn't work.
and just plain dead, 6 feet under.
You know, I'm legitimately surprised that after all this time and with all the advances that've happened with plug-ins that no one has really stepped up to the plate to do their take on the GenX line as a spiritual successor. There was X-Transfer, but iirc that only worked between Gen3 and Gen8 and even that was highly unreliable and prone to frequent crashes from my experience.
Sorry to get off topic, but it's a thought that I sometimes have when this subject comes up every so often.
Maybe it is simply that Dimension3d was a genius ...
...indeed, he was. GenerationX and X2 were integral to my custom character development. For example I could create use G1 Toon characters with G3 and have a wider variety of clothing, skins, and hair to choose from. Same for any special morphs (like Dario Fish's HFS Ultimate Shapes) released for G1.
Crikey would love ot have just one day free of 502/504 errors.
I think a big part of the problem is a lack of documentation, or that it is not organized very well. Even somebody who is good at programming would have a hard time figuring out how it's done in DAZ. I'd say the only thing less informative is the documentation for creating a plugin for Kodi.
Is that a new development, though? I'm relatively new to Daz, so if there was a time when better documentation was available, I wasn't around for it.
...I used to programme back in the 70s and 80s when documentation was mandatory, unlike as what appears to be the case today..
Nowadays it's all browser-based and nobody knows how to do it otherwise
+1 For C++ Builder, which back in the day I affectionately referred to as VB for C++ :) Borland was quite the company. I mean, how do you write a GUI Framework (OWL) that is better than the framework from the company that wrote the OS it runs on?
The most frustrating thing for me about DAZ is this: They offer a native C++ SDK that gives essentially unoccluded access to everything DS can do. But they don't document any of it in any meaningful way.
If there were some sort of official technical support, or even a paid option, so that any enterprising nerd could implement his/her vision, we woud have many more cool plugins to do all sorts of things. As it stands, figuring things out just takes too long for the majority of people who develop for DS in between work and family.
I think that instead of wishing for DAZ to implement certain features when they give every sign of not having sufficient dev resources, we should be wishing for quality documentation so that the community of programmers here (whose numbers are probably several times that of the DS dev team) can become engaged and be productive. Other render engines? Check. Working IK? Check. Gen X version 9? Check.
More documentation = more cool stuff. That's what we should be asking for, not specific features, assuming what the users want has any effect at all, which is another debate to be had.
Had the same GenX problem on MAC. Had to resort to using a DAZ Studio version that was a Public Build Beta. I saved that version of Studio because it's the only one of the newer versions that GenX will work on.
My favorite was CodeWarrior. I started with Borland due to my limited budget in college, but got Codewarrior after a random guy on IRC made it possible. He regretted it when he found out my download speed, but didn't cancel the upload. My professor would only accept code that compiles on Linux. That was a problem due to subtle differences between the Microsoft compiler and GCC, which made things very bad for me. I resorted to writing code and compiling it on a Linux webserver that was available to me, just so I wouldn't fail the classes. But CodeWarrior's strict compiler compiled code for Windows that ran 100% the same as it would when compiled by GCC for Linux. It was a glorious time. It's over now.
Ah, the documentation problem at DAZ. I'd thought that that topic had long been a skeleton. Not that the problem was, but the topic was worn out. Guess not. I was screaming about DAZ's attitude regarding documentation twenty years ago. It's nice to see that traditions are being upheld.
a relative of Ralf Sesseler Dimension3D posted after his passing that he never discussed his hobby wirh his family and they also were unable to access his computer so hopes of fixing anything are slim
And which version would that be, and which MacOS are you running?
Ah, yes. I well recall all those years ago trying to find where DS ___ Tool had been moved to because it sure wasn't where the docs said it was, & then figuring out how it worked now. And this was when there weren't updates every few months. Then I wised up and learned to ask here.
Warning: My resolutions include "doing more renders" & "seeing if I & my computer both like latest DS version" so expect a few more "how do I do this?" posts from me.
Sorry, that version of DAZ Studio won't even open on my computer now. GenX was, in my opinion, the single most useful product DAZ ever sold - and now it doesn't work at all. How ironic.
Tks for clarifying! Yeah I've wept oceans already.
...same here. GenX saved me a tonne of zlotys in the long run as it allowd me to build and extensive "gene pool". for charcter development. I can transfer GenX morphs from G3 to G8 but it means one more step amd G8 is the end of the line.
I've come to realize I'm done with those orange sale banner offers that appear at the top of the webpages. The last straw for me was when one of them said "save big on Victoria 9" and saving big meant paying at least $60 to get Victoria 9. Now I just click the banners away without looking at them.
I wish there was a way to delete them from the message page because they just keep popping up otherwise. I find myself closing out on quite a few.
For me, it's just that they're selling Genesis 9 content, which I'm not stepping into yet... and I'm stuck between "they're not calling out Editorial Licenses in any way that doesn't require me to do a LOT more work to make sure I don't buy them" and "we just got a credit card number stolen, and I need to revise where I spend money online and how I do it, as this site is unfortunately one of the potential places I had it happen."
That's a recent development, and I agree. Used to be - a couple or three years ago, I think - orange banners were really cool and the offers were great. Now, they show up for whatever is on sale at the moment, and usually not so great.
This used to be possible but it changed within the last couple of years. On the other hand, there were a couple times back then I changed my mind on a message with a code. So now I just wish clicking the X on the banner once would make it stop reappearing; it seems like they need to be clicked off on every new page sometimes.
It's driving me insane. I keep getting the same banner pop up every day a couple of times a day. It was nice when we were able to delete them. I went into my account yesterday and was like what happened to delete them?
