Virtual Reality and DAZ Studio

DAZ Studio user for 20 years.  But totally newb at VR.  blush

1) What does "standalone" mean in relation to a Virtual Reality headsets?  "Standalone" as differing from what?

2) Can DAZ Studio (or Carrara) be used to generate VR animations?

3) Is the Oculus Quest 2 adequate?  If not then what features would be necessary?  Product recommendation?

Standalone refers to if it has to have a PC to be used or not. The Quest and Quest 2 are standalone, but also have the ability to connect to a PC to play PCVR games. In the past standlaone headsets didn't have much internal power and the games were pretty simplified, but the new chip used in the Quest 2 is close to PC level computing.

Daz Studio really doesn't offer any VR capabilities yet. Your best bets for viewing/working on animations with DAZ figures in VR is in Unity, Maya, blender, or specialized gaming apps like Virtamate which use the G2 figures (G8 in the next version) and let you import clothing/environments and is based off Unity..

the Quest 2 is a pretty powerful headset for the price. Even though I have 2 more expensive PC only VR headsets (Rift S and Index), I have been using mine since launch and it's performed well.

    Welcome to VR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the insights.yes  I have no VR unit yet, but after today I am looking for ways to stimulate the economy.smiley

No problem. I have been very active in VR for the past couple of years and try to get more and more people into it. Last week I went to see my Dad who is pretty much confined to a wheel chair due to old age and having knee replacements and other ailments. I took my Quest 2 with me so he could check VR out. He used to be very active in bowling leagues and I installed a bowling game on it for him and he had a blast, so I bought him his own headset and some games. We'll see what happens next, LOL

You're using the Quest 2 instead of the Index? or just sometimes... curious. I find the Quests too heavy and the Index much easier on the neck  muscles :)

I definitely recommend getting a VR headset if you can - most fun I've had in years :D

Mada, I am using both, but lean on the Quest 2 for more casual use and media (watch all movies on it). I have addons that balance out the weight and make it more comfortable, plus i am just spolied by the wireless option. I have a high back leather office chair and find the Quest 2 the way I have it set up more comfortable on the back of my head when sitting watching media or online. (I am on it right now, LOL)

really curious to see the new standalone from HTC

ah that makes sense :) I use a tub chair for exactly that reason - doesn't interfere  with the cord

  • I am keen to see if VR can be used to experience DazStudio. I would like to move away from keyboard and mouse (RSI using DAZ is heavy).

I'm hopeful that at somepoint a clever person will build a PC bridge or layout to experience the interface in 3d.

In the mean time I've been using a Quest2 since the start of this year to "play" Minecraft. When I say play. I really just mean sit and watch the sun going up and down. I installed a few realistic shader packs and it really is a nice experience :-)

  • there's a program on Steam (early access) called Mirage that is looking to provide very high quality VR experience with 3d models/anims - seems to be Unity based and the creator is working on a DAZ import toolset

  • I've been playing around with Daz Studio and my Quest 2 a lot lately. Depending on what you're looking for, it is pretty easy to get some cool stuff to look at through your headset from Daz, if you just want to view the scene from a set position. I just render the scene from a camera with a spherical lens, upload to google drive, go to my headset, go to browser, download image on my headset, go to the Play'A app, and look around the scene. It might not be a true VR experience, but I'm really enjoying it.

  • Three weeks ago I recieved an HP Reverb G2 headset. I have been looking for way to view some of my models in some sort of viewer. I found this thread and decided to share what I found. On Steam you can get a program called VR Model viewer. In it you can load many different file formats, I found that the best results are OBJfrom Daz Studio directly in this viewer. I was blown away... After adjusting a few settings and fixing some texture issues its pretty easy to just export anything in DAZ right to this software to look at it in VR. You really get a feel for the true size of the characters, proportions and if your imprting scenes and props well thats the real fun, building your own worlds to explore.

I also found this video for the new version of Blender. Looks like you can model in VR right inside Blender. With the DAZ bridge this could be a useful tool for artists.

I will share some screenshots in next week.

  • Hi all, I don't know if this has been asked before, but here's my question:
Can VRs be used as a viewfinder/screen for when you design a scene in the daz?
I don't mean to render or see how it would look like, but to enter inside the work area and let the glasses act as a camera while you place the props, figures, dress them, etc...

    thank you.

Unfortunately no. DAZ has yet to implement any kind of VR function inside Daz Studio. I would pay for a plug in that would allow this since I got a taste of this using VirAmate which does this exact thing, but not in DS (Unity) and using the genesis 2 figures (for now)

I don't really remember how but I did get to view the DAZ Studio Viewport in my Oculus Rift S a couple of years ago. Unfortunately I had to stop using the headset as I was getting bad headaches after a short period of use. I seem to remember setting up a camera to view stereoscopic 3D. I think there was a thread here explaining how to do that. All I remember is that I could move around the viewport but actually using the posing controls and other things that we normally do in the viewport was just not practical.

I'm wondering if there's a way to film a camera moving through a scene in a side by side format that you can then upload to YouTube to be viewed in VR?

@Mada I've found that the heaviness of the headset has actually improved my neck muscles! I used to get a lot of neck aches & even had to have acupuncture at one point but when I use VR especially for working out, I really see the strength of my neck muscles getting stronger and leading to less neck ache!

Hi :) yes there are different assets for unity that will let you do that, I'm travelling right now so don't have access to my stuff but I'll check next week :)

  • Cool I'm just getting started with VR

  • Every night our own brain creates a virtual reality so good that it convinces itself that it is real while simultaneously directing it from behind the scenes.

There's one I've been following on Steam for a while...development is super slow on it, almost to the point of being vapourware.  But, developer says that soon(TM) you'll be able to export your scenes back into Daz.

Right now, it's pretty much just a porn VR game, but he's releasing the importer soon(TM) for Genesis 3, and 8/8.1 shortly after, then claims that he'll have an exporter as well.

Would be cool to be able to import characters and scenes into a VR world, pose things life-sized, then export back out and render up the image.

Thank you very much for the info. I wanted to buy the HTC Vive pro or the HTC Cosmo... now I do not know if it would be better to first invest in a more powerful workstation.

The Cosmo is horrible, I wouldn't advise getting it. if you are planning on using Unity or any other game with VR, you will need a good computer. Just get the Quest 2. it is stand alone, but works well with PCVR also and is cheaper than the other options, but with higher specs than most. You can always get a more expensive/advanced VR headset later.

@FSMCDesigns thanks for the info. I don't want the glasses to play, I want them to design, I don't mind saving some more money and buy a more expensive glasses, it's better than having some unused ones at home.
What is your opinion of the HTC Vive pro2 or Cosmo Elite?

The only positives I see with the new pro model are the size and weight and the contrast due to the new lenses, the rest are the same as the Quest 2 or worse. It is meant for business use also and the resolution is the same as the Quest 2 and batterly life is only at 2 hours, so no thank you.

I really have my eyes on the G2 Reverb, it seems really good for the Quality/Price.

  • MadaMada Posts: 1,865

The Reverb is nice - I didn't like the home room navigation, and the controllers was not quite as comfy, but the visual quality is good.

I am spoilt by using the Index and knuckles controllers, even after 3 years its still the best headset for me. I would want to at least do some serious testing of the Quest Pro before I put down that kind of money.

That's the one.  I'm holding my suspicions on it.  Developer seems to be taking a very long time with releasing the importer alone, dragging his heels and coming up with several excuses as to why it's delayed.  Been delayed for a couple of years now with excuse after excuse.  But, I also want to give him the benefit of the doubt since he's only one guy programming.

There is also the 2.99 steam app called VR model viewer. so far it seems to be a bit buggy on fbx imports but its the only stable thing I was able to make work.

Mirage has finally been updated, but now it is just a bridge to Unity and you have to have Unity installed to use it. Very dissapointing I had high hopes for Mirage.

I have tried VR model veiwer and all the other model veiwers on Steam, none are that great. Whis DS had a function like that
