It looks OK in the view port but when I render it goes a solid black with no transparency showing.
What am I doing wrong?

Which render engine?
3Delight using AMR's render pref script 'average quality' which is what I usually use with no problems
If you render then go to Help>Troubleshooting>View log and scroll to the end, are there any errors relating to image processing (TDLMake) or loading? Or to shaders?
these are the relevant messages:

it looks like that first warning might be the problem?
Nice character! May I ask who he is?
I am not usually using UberEnvironment ... walks off to try ...
Works for me ...
He is Sulaiman available here at DAZ
Strange that the hair seems to work for you. I will try setting him up from scratch with a fresh scene and see if that makes any difference. There coiuld be something hanging over from the last time I used it.
Or just apply the material to the hair again?
I used the DB_Hair_Mat (not the DB_Hair_Black_Mat ... but it shouldn't make a difference)
Off to wishlist Sulaiman ...
Ah!!!!!
Everything is OK with a clean starting scene with a very basic light setup.
The light setup I tend to use as standard comes from the SI Bandit Outfit. When I replace the basic lights with one of those sets the rendering is now OK.
It looks like some bad settings might have accumulated from frequent use.
Good luck with Sulaiman, he is a nice guy to know.
I think I have solved it.
The problem comes in when you do a complete load all.
Reloading the hair mat fixes the problem.
luv the beardie beads :)
This is what I get. I'll give it a try. Thanks.
