Iray Viewport better then actual render?

I am working with this Roly the Panda character and the Iray Viewport preview looks amazing (first image attached).

But when I actually render the image, it looks weird, like the hair is whispy or almost not there (second image).

Why would the preview look better then the actual render?

Since you're working with dForce hair, it's most likely something like Render Line Tesselation being set too low.

Thanks that fixed it. Changed it from 1 to 2.

Strange that the viewport would use different settings than the render though.

The viewport renderer is different from a full render, it's using Iray Interactive, which is different from the full Iray render.

You have a choice of what mode to use in the Iray Preview in the viewport. You can choose Photoreal if you prefer. This is configured in the Draw Settings pane.

Edit: I made a screenshot of the Draw Settings pane where this option can be found, but the stupid forum software will not attach it. There is a whole thread about the forum not uploading images. sad
