And one thing to watch out for in that case is if the update changes file names, then you want to make sure to remove (or archive somewhere, or otherwise make a note) the old files. That doesn't happen often, but it has happened occaisionally to me.
But yes I arrange everything how it makes sense to me. I'm still all for better consistency in the store products however, makes it easier for me to know where to move it in my system.
I wish that there was a way to have the folders that were used on an object appear when the object is selected. For example, a sweater would also bring up the Shader Preset folders used on the object, like an extended history.
...+1
Which is what I've been doing for years.
In Products folder are the metadata of the products. This only matters for smartcontent. Content Library and Custom Folder are not affected by suppress their use. If Smart content is not used then sub-folders that are not in Runtime and data folders can be moved and renamed. If using smartcontent is required, then it is possible to easily repair the metadata after renaming or moving the sub-folders.
If files in data folder are moved it is very difficult to repair the operabilitty. It can be done, but it is a tiring and boring job when the number of files is large. It does not worth because most are files that users don't see.
1) Products without metadata go to Local User. I don’t remember if this is automatic or happen when custom folders are created. As I create my own metadata I usually clean Local User, because it causes some nasty effects, like removing the tag from the file type in the thumbnails.
2) If you use DIM and want to retain the ability to install/uninstall you should not move things. But you can also edit this so that DIM knows where the files are now and can uninstall them. If there are many files it is also a tedious task.
Two things
First...I don't use Smart Content and in fact maually install, as stated. When you install things to MyLibrary there are only 3 folders you can not move or rename, that would be the data folder and everything in it, and the Geomtries and Texture folders in Runtime.
Second...Yes you can merge all those Genesis 8 Female folders into one only, as Gigi stated, if you do not use Daz Central or DIM or Connect.
You use an app to install and you pretty much have to leave things where they are or start figuring out how to get the app and Daz to know where to find them.
One of the gripes I have with the current system is... I have a lot of objects, but not all of them show up in Daz search, even if I plug the exact name in. I.e., I'm looking for a particular table. I can picture in my mind the specific table, its a fairly distinctive looking table, but its not among the ones that come up when I go to the content library pane and plug Table into the search. Even though the actual prop has table in the name of the object. Eventuallly I get exasperated, track down the zip file it arrived originally in, open that, drill down and find it sitting somewhere in some Poser related path, and THEN go find it in the same location in my Runtime folder.
You'd figure the search in Daz would also pull up stuff with that name in the actual name of the object itself, but Daz ONLY uses the keywords the maker placed into an imbedded file that came as part of the product (and is the same system the Smart Content uses to keep things straight), but it irritates me that the search ignores the actual FILE NAME when you do searches. Drives me bonkers, and I hope this gets changed in some future Daz.
...I think the search has to do with what's in the database. I have a number of items from Rendo and other stores, as well as non Daz freebies, that do not show up in a search. A fair amount of Daz stuff doesn't either as it is not where the database expects to find it due to my custom set-up. I don't bother with Smart Content either.
You can choose whether to search in the database or the real folders
I just manually fix all the file structure spelling errors the installer leaves behind. And vendors that use the generic "Genesis 8" folder for both gendered poses for example, I just copy one into Genesis 8 Male, one copy one in Genesis 8 Female and delete the nasty common Genesis 8 folder. I have absolutely zero use for Smart Content or any (automated) changes to the filing structure, since I use a ton of freebies, Rendo, imports from FBX and custom projects. If that got dumped into some "External non-Daz" folder, half my Library would become unusable.
Since we won’t see DAZ Studio 5 in a while and the folder structure probably will be the same as we have now, I decided not to worry about that aspect anymore and went back to my Rstudio script project to create metadata, but this time I added the pre-assignment to a custom category and batch processing.
Before installing a product or freebie I manually modify the folder structure by removing vanity folders and fixing inconsistencies, which by the way, there are many. Unfortunately there’s no way to automate this part that takes up most of the time, and it’s easier to do it in an isolated folder than to search inside a soup of files scattered between folders with changed or clipped names, with symbols that alter their alphabetical order.
You know I am gonna pop up in this thread lol...... I have been taking apart installer zips and reaasembling them before installing so I can find stuff for years now. I have gone so far as to put catagories of clothes inside my clothing folder, then products inside those to make it even easier. I eliminate all vanity folders, and other useless clickthrough folders, such as materials > iray when iray is the only type there is anyways. I often times even have to redo the load icons, and dial icons as well. I want to be able to see what blabla looks like without having to load it in or spin the dial. It's a bit time consuming on the front end, but it saves a lot of time when I am creating an image.
