3D Prop not working in Daz studio

So I got a freebie from MostDigitalCreations called "Pandoras Box 39" and the image below is what I get when it loads in DS. Any idea as to how to fix it? I contacted MDC and they said

It must be a bug with Studio because it works fine in Poser. I've had a look at it and I can't find a reason why it wouldn't work in Studio.
Just one of those things. Sorry

Which is no help at all really, but I should warn you although the screenshot is well-within the realm of common-decency, the actual prop is likely some kind of adult toy, which all of their "Pandora Box" props have been in the past. So if you go downloading and testing, be prepared.

you need to give your email addy to download it too.

Any messages in the log file?
I had something similar with a prop from 'rosity (Breached Hull) and the vendor supplied an update to fix it.

That looks to be a similar set of messages that I got (from memory) so there should be a fix, it's down to if the vendor can be bothered or not, and if it's a freebie I am guessing not. You will probably find it will load in DS3 (if you have it), so something has changed to make DS more strict with it's 'sanity checking' of data.

Uh nope, no DS3 and I have no intention of installing it again after the last batch of problems, removing it rectified. I wonder if anyone else has been able to get it to work or what?

I suspect not in DS4.*. Or at least not without taking it into a modelling program and doing something to it! ;)

See if you can import the .obj from the geometries folder.. unless the creator was really lazy and didn't rip it out of the .pp2 like you're supposed to.

That worked! There are bones in it with an overall "material" zone but only two main bones are actually being used. I saved it as a Prop asset and now it is all good. Thanks!

Any chance of a step by step? What you said is all Greek to me and I downloaded that freebie along with a bunch of others from that site that I haven't had a chance to install yet. A step by step would be helpful for when I get to it and run into the same problem.

    TIA,

    Cathy

Hi Cathy, wow sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this. I don't usually check the forums that often and jus now I was cleaning out some of my bookmarks. Anyways here is your step by step from memory...

File > Import> (locate the object file in your Runtime) Runtime > Geometries > PandorasBox > Box 39.obj When you get prompted for import options I generally set the FROM preset to Poser (all depends on where it was made in/ for because each software handles dimensions differently in a 3D space, Poser is generally a safe bet) Click on Accept. Oh my that is VERY NSFW! No screenshot here.

Next highlight the item in the Scene tab, go to File > Save As > Support Asset > Figure/ Prop Asset. Give it a good identifiable name  like "PandorasBox39". click Save. In the options I just go with teh default ones and click Accept.

Now make a new, empty scene and in the Content Library tab you can usually find it in Daz Studio Formats > Content Library > Figures > PandorasBox39.duf
Double click it and it is as basic of a DS prop as can be. lol If there were articulated parts to it then it is much more complicated and outside of my comprehension. Best of luck to ya!

I like to do the above with as many of his Pandoras Box freebies as possible because they always come in all white, gray, or black and never have any thumbnail besides the spacey box graphic. Also, some of his freebies come in two parts one of which is the actual 'box' from the thumbnail which is just useless to me. Nothing too fancy just change the diffuse color, specularity and bump mapping using shaders or the surfaces tab, (I prefer the hair shader presets from the Visual Styles Shaders)select it in scene, frame camera, then go through the Save As process from above. It does a few things. Saves it with the surfaces intact, makes it DS compatible file and generates a thumbnail! Providing you don't mind rows and rows of adult toys staring you in the face, then you can just categorize it however you see fit. The next part is to make metadata for it and thankfully with 4.9.2 it has become significantly easier to add it to smart content. I will save THAT tutorial for someone with better knowledge of the process than myself, though I have been doing alright on my own.

Thanks!  I'll give it a try.  I'm still going through a lot of freebies that I've never gotten around to installing.  This will help when I get to the MDC stuff!
