Blender Cloud Membership

vijayasimhabrvijayasimhabr Posts: 204
August 2021 in Blender Discussion

Folks,

I have recently begun my 3D art journey with Daz. I have been reading up a lot of material on Daz forums and the internet in general. I feel like a knowledge of Blender will be good for me.

Next, I feel better when I have a well documented, organized curriculum in front of me, I learn better, and in a more organized fashion.

So, is the Blender Cloud Membership worth it? I understand that there are ton of free stuff out there, but I dont mind the monthly membership.

    I subscribed to CG Cookie for a couple or so years; it was worth the cost to me at that time. I've paid Udemy for tutorials (not Blender) too, and also found theirs to be very good.

    Is a particular 'thing' worth it? Well, only you can answer that.

    I don't know about the Blender Cloud, but I can recommend FlippedNormal's lightsaber course. It's free, and it's a well-structured intro course made by industry professionals. Generally, when it comes to Blender, the pros create the intro tutorials for free and then charge for the advanced stuff. So if you like FlippedNormals's style, once you get through the intro courses you go to their website and buy the pro courses you need.

    There's also CGBoost's free intro course. I haven't used it myself, but I have used their paid courses and they're excellent quality. Too bad there aren't more of them.

    You time is too limited to do both. One thing at a time. You can join if you simply want to donate $11 & change USD a month irrelevant to you doing their tutorials but you don't have time to do seriously both and work at a real job too.

    Personally, I feel if you are really brand new to DAZ you but DAZ on the back burner 6 - 12 months and go all out Blender for 6 - 12 months intensively.

    I've personally never used anything from it, other than some of the training which concentrates on some important things beyond animation like cinematography, but don't underestimate the feeling of putting your money where your mouth is and knowing you're directly supporting Blender...

    @nicstt

    CG Cookie looks good. and extensive. I will add it to my study plan, see if works withn my budget. Thank you.

    Not a huge fan of Udemy, personally. Not sure why, he he :) will skip that.

    @margrave

    You are  on point on that free + paid system. I am a self taught professional software developer, but I have always learnt from books and  written tutorials. This entire 3D thing is a visual thing. This will be the first time I will be resorting to video tutorials.

    I liked both Flipped Normal and CG Boost. I think, I will give both the free stuff a spin, and eventually buy what interests me. I always assumed, free = bad, these free tutorials look top quality. I may not have to pay for anything for at least a few months of the initial learning.

    Thank you for your advice.

    @nonesuch00

    My interests are limited to create still images with ready to use scenes and assets. Daz, is so easy to use for this purpose. Its surprisingly easy. The community so helpful, I am already getting what I wanted, and it has already started helping me. As of now, I am all set with Daz.

    Even in Blender, I am only interested in 2D images with 3D scenes. So, yes, I will take your advise, and spend my time on Blender going forward. Thank you.

    @TheMysteryIsThePoint

    Yes, there is an element of contribution. I have been hearing about Blender since I was a kid. I do support open source and charity and stuff. That was also my motivation to pay for Blender Cloud. Every year, I donate to food for kids, Mozilla Fondation, Wiki Foundation and sometimes, random folks on GitHub. So, yes, I was factoring in my usual tendency to support open source while thinking of Blender Cloud.

    Eventually, I might get the subscription for Blender Cloud (it's only 10 bucks :) ), if for nothing else, but to support these guys. I am new to 3D (but not to tech tools and such), and I cannot believe an amazing software like Blender is free! It's fascinating.

    Thank you very much. I think, I will buy that Blender cloud subscription with my next paycheck.

    Final Note.

    As always, thank you folks. I learnt some really new stuff. all of this, is going to my work diary. On a minor note, I am going through some severe depression, loss of relationships and lost lives due to the pandemic (especially here in India). In an odd way, Daz, this 3D stuff and this forum is keeping me together.

    I don't have much to add to the discussion that others haven't touched on. But on that last point you raise ... I can feel  your loss and the need to find something to fill it in with. The arts have always been a source of solace for the world-weary. For some its words; for others its imagery and music or theater. I started my 3D learning less than four years ago with Daz and Blender and have found the journey worth my while. Like you, I get the validation from honing my skill; I also feel the belonging to a larger community that's talented and supportive. So keep it up. I hope you find the healing your spirit needs.

    Cheers!

    @csaa

    Everyday, I get up, do my work, pay my bills, go to sleep, since the outbreak last year. I must have spent months looking for something to do. The pandemic had exhausted all my usual outlets to find something to do. Traveling, dead. Photography, dead. I accidentally ended up with Daz, and now, everytime I put something for render (I dont even share it elsewhere. I just look at it) and the final image, puts a smile on my face.

    More importantly, its not expensive. A few bucks every month. I had almost signed up for a paid support group, but Daz and digital art just might keep me alive :)

    Thank you for your kind words. Your post made my day today.

    I hear you on Daz keeping you going. I just lost my Mom on Tuesday to a heart attack (she had just beaten colon cancer last month too) and the past three days this is the only thing that has been able to keep me sane. So cheers to the 3D world and it's wonderful community for helping us get through the tough times. I hope the creative juices flow for you and help in the best possible way :)

    Oh my god! I am sorry to hear that. I pray to gods that you are alright. I remember the day when my father in law died, only a couple of hours after talking to me. He was always nice to me.

    Life goes on :) Yes, cheers to the community indeed.

    So sorry for your loss. I lost my Mom from a heart procedure gone wrong about 10 months ago. I feel your loss. DS helps a lot, but many other things going on as well have kept me from it. Hang in there, it does get easier.

    So sorry for your loss too. Messing around with DAZ and 3D have helped me through many difficult times too. It's a wonderful distraction from real life. Hang in there, and don't be afraid to get more help if needed. The last year and a half has been difficult everywhere,  but I'm sure it's been extremely difficult where you are. Have a blessed day, and everyday going forward.
