NLA clips from existing keyframes

Is there a way to take an existing keyframed animation segment and then make it a clip?  Seems when I select everything and create a clip the clip is always empty.  I am new at this so... newb...

I tried selecting all the keyframes and copying it into the clip while editing the clip but nothing copied over.

 

Any good tutorials?
