Saving hair parts as props ? (Kiriko hair)

Hello,

Is there a way to save parts of a hair as props, to use them parented on the character's head ? I'm thinking about Kiriko hair specifically, but I guess the process could be reproduced on other hairs as well.

On this hair, there are 3 parts, the head, and the 2 tails. the idea would be to have the two tails available for use on top of a Kiriko hair with it's tails invisible, because they tend to break on custom shaped characters (autofit works great on the head part, but not on the tails). So having the tails usable without autofit would make it much more easier to use on custom characters.

Thanks !

In which application? In DS you can use the Geometry Editor tool to select the base and one tail, hide them, and delete hidden geometry, save as a Prop Asset (or export as OBJ) then repeat for the other tail on a fresh copy of the hair.

Thank you Richard ! yes, it's for DS 4.6 (forgot to tell in my post). I'll try this to see how it does.

I've made tests in the meantime with 2 hairs on the character (1 conformed with tails hidden, 1 parented with head hidden, but that's not very handy to do :) , so I can't wait to try the other method). Thanks again !

Well, I have a small problem, saving one of the tail as prop asset did work, but now all I have on my runtime is that right tail, as seen in the capture :) . Loading the hair itself does load the single right tail.

It seems the geometry editor did overwrite some settings on the hair file, or did add some settings file about it somewhere, but I don't know where it is stored, as reinstalling the hair doesn't solve the problem.

Did you change the names in the options dialogue when saving the asset? if not it will have overwritten the original. The Author and product names determine the folder names for the asset fiels in the Data folder, so they must be unique.

I think I've only changed the "item name" (used a different name than original hair, something like "right-tail"), but I didn't change the Vendor name, and Product name, that's probably where I made the mistake.

I guess it's a content database problem ? I found a Database maintenance option in the library options ("reset database", perhaps ?), but I didn't try this yet, I'm afraid it will break something else that worked fine before (everything worked fine before I broke that hair file).

    Thanks for your help :)

Changing the item name should be OK.

Well, actually it "permanently" killed the hair on my system, not sure why it's doing this, but I've deleted-reinstalled the hair pack 2 times, and I still get that right-tail thing loading, instead of the complete hair Oo . I don't understand why Daz is giving priority to a version of the file that existed once only (and deleted 20 minutes later), on top of the complete version of the hair, which was installed like 4 times since I've got the problems.

Before that, the hair had troubles on some custom-shaped characters, but now it's just unusable at all.

There must be some bits of data Daz saved somewhere, to allow this "trunked" version of the hair to survive reinstalls, but I do not know where to find it.

Check where Daz is on the C Drive Programs and see if there is anything there with the same name as the hair.

Thanks, I've tried to have a look on the Daz directory but didn't find anything, though I guess configuration files would be in another location anyway, like Appdata\Roaming. I've tried deleting a Dson file with the hair name in there, but that didn't solve the issue. That's one crazy issue if you ask me Oo.

I'm worried to break something else by doing, but I think I'll try a full database reset, to see if it does something.

Have you looked in the data folder? I had something similar happen once as there was a data folder that I hadn't gotten rid of. If you delete all the files and reinstall it should work. Somewhere you have most likely missed something.

If you do a complete data reset make sure you have exported any user categories you have set up. Adam has instructions in a sticky somewhere...

Thank you for the tip, I think I had deleted everything that was related to the hair in the Data directory, but I'll check again. And thanks, I'll check these infos about the data reset, because indeed, i don't want to break something else in the process :) .

In the meantime, I've installed the V4 version, thinking I could do with that as long as my gen2 version is corrupted, but heck, even the V4 version looks broken to me, on a base genesis 2 female (exactly like gen2 version, tails are broken about mid-height, see the capture), and of course it get worse and worse with each full body shape morph used...

Not very happy with that hair, there is something wrong about how the tails are made, it seems.

Sorry for digging up such an old thread :) ,but I tried again that hair a few days ago (which still had this unfixable problem 2 years later), and today I've finally fixed it laugh !! When I loaded it 2 days ago, to my surprise, it came full (erm, I mean, "normal" lol), but it was loading broken again each time when reopening the scene.

I think the culprit datas were actually the "autoadapted" settings, in the Data directory. My library is rather messy, I have got 2 "my library" directories in fact, and there was the old autoadapted one, dating from 2014, in one, and a new one (from 2 days ago), in the other one. I tried to swap them (did put the 2016 "working" version in place of the 2014 broken one) but it was crashing Daz everytime I tried to reload the scene. So I've deleted everything, the product files, both autoadapted folders, and a folder in Appdata\roaming\Dson\cache related to the hair, reinstalled a fresh copy of the hair, and so far, it works.

2 years and a half later... I can finally use that hair, heh :) . Just posting this in case the same problem happen to anyone, you need to find and delete the 2 folders in the directories I mentionned.
