Introduction and some newbie questions

Hi,

My name is Anne Marie and I am new to Daz Studio. I am also a jack of all trades including writer, editor, magazine publisher and website designer. What started out as an article and then series on digital art for a traditional art (niche) magazine has blossomed into a full fledged interest in all aspects of digital art in particular 3D and animation. I've even started a website for animal artists (ie dogs, cats, horses, etc) who are in the digital art and photography fields.
For the article I was looking for software that would let someone new to digital art be able to jump right in and start. I've looked at a variety of programs including Blender, Poser and finally the path has led me to Daz Studio and I'm hooked. After my first scene I actually felt like an "artist". Well maybe not ..... :)
OK so that's the introduction. My main question: What figures, props, scenes and other add ons would you deem an absolute necessity for Daz Studio? I can see going absolutely wild in the store and wanting to buy everything but for the beginner where should they start? Can they get away with what comes with the program? Should they buy the latest figures eg Victoria 5 or is Victoria 4 sufficient. I see there are lots of sales on V4 outfits, etc. :) This is for me personally as well as for the article. :)
So what's in your shopping list? All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hello Anne Marie, and Welcome to the forums!

There is a load of free content that comes with DAZ Studio. Have you already downloaded Genesis Starter Essentials, and the two Genesis 2 Starter Essentials (Male and Female), and also the Default Lights and Shaders for DS?

That should keep you going for a while.

There are lots of freebies available for both Genesis and Genesis 2 on ShareCG, morphs and clothing, so have a look there as well.

All Generation 5 characters (V5, M5 etc etc) , are based on Genesis, while Generation 6 characters (V6, M6 etc etc) are based on Genesis 2 (Male or Female depending)

I think you should try out a few of the characters that you already have, try using some of the free morphs, and then you may decide what you need. V4 is older technology, but still very popular, and there are a mountain of freebies for it as well, but the base figure is not free (unlike Genesis)

    Hi there Addict,

Thanks for the fast reply. I have been busy downloading everything free including some interactive tutorials. :) I've watched all the free tutorials, bought a daz studio beginner's book on my tablet (my reading time is limited so that may be a chore) and even joined the Platinum Club though those $1.99 items add up quickly. I have to keep removing them from my shopping cart when I look at the totals. :( The reason I even found Daz Studio was because Victoria was suggested as a model for Poser. So I wasn't sure if Victoria and Michael were necessities or if one could make due with Genesis and Genesis 2 figures.
I have been playing around with DS in all my spare time (actually it is taking me away from my chores) but seems to be a program that someone can jump right in with without having to read a bible or have master computer skills. And for beginners that is so important or they get discouraged. So Daz Studio will be getting the nod in the article as the article is focused for those interested in getting involved in this media. Thanks for the information on Share CG will have a look there as well.

Just a quick remark Jimmy's forum name is Jimmy or JimmyC_2009, his forum status is addict. In the same way at the moment your default forum name is info and your forum status is New Member.

    I have noticed, as a two-month-and-change-user.
There are some basic "Morph Packages" that allot of 'add on figures' (Characters or People) require to work on Genesis 2 female (G2F).
*It may be the same for 'Genesis (1)' figures, and Genesis 2 Male (G2M), I am so new, I haven't researched that much yet.

Genesis 2 Female(s) Morphs Bundle, This is both the Face and body Morph bundles that are required for allot of figures.
    http://www.daz3d.com/genesis-2-female-body-morphs
If you have no intention of getting any G2F figures now, take this as an example only. It only works for G2F-figures that require it, or if you want to mess with the morphs by themselves.

Then there is even the base shape that Some require, Weather it be a Michal, or a Victoria (or other). In the end, it takes allot of digging around and taking notes to get an idea of what character requirement bundles will give you the "Most bang for the buck". If you just go all out and get it all bundles, it gets expensive quickly.

My take on the matter the last few month was, "Just give me something phenomenal to work with, so I can learn the rest of the, art of lighting and camera angles".

I came here because I wanted to do some 3D renders of equipment to get an idea of what it would look like in a 19" rack or on a Control Console. I have been sucked into this pose and render art from day 1, I have no regrets.

PC club saves quite a bit of money on the long run. :-)

That said, here are some morphes for Genesis which give you a huge variation of shapes for Genesis:

lee_lhs that was so nice of you to compile that list! :) That should help a lot of folks. (I put a link to it in my reference section of the Art Studio thread.)

One thing to consider- the technology gets better with the later figures- going with Generation 4 (Victoria 4, etc) is fine, but you will have more creasing issues with the bending of the arms and legs. There are products to address that, but if you're talking money, products cost money. Genesis figures have better flow when it comes to the bends. The Platinum Club should definitely be mentioned- it's the best way to stock up and experiment.
