So far comparing the original Studio Light Pro and the update, I'm far from impressed. You get 4 more light types which give you some more variations and some extra pages to the manual.

Oh, and the materials are updated from the old DS format to the new DS format. No enough to warrant paying an additional $25. Especially when I have to wonder how long before this product no longer supported.

This may sound unkind but it is the truth.

I dont want to be offensive at all, but a light product, advertised by the number of light colors and positions that are included? Seriously? I mean, everyone who has ever set up a scene in DAZ Studio knows how to change a light color or position within seconds. Why should I need that? And how does the light know where my camera is and which object I want to light? How can a light load in the correct position?

Sorry, but that all sounds a bit strange to me.

Made me chuckle too, but as it is a 'Studio Light' product I assume that the settings are based around 'classic' lighting solutions you'd encounter or use within an actual studio, based on the DS default load position.

So.... is their an upgrade route/price from the prior SLP product??

The DS 4.6 Edition is a revamp of the "older" DAZ Studio 2 version. It has 800+ lights, presets and variations. That is, for instance if you open up a light type, it can be made of several quality versions, various colors and then various positions. Just the Soft Box alone, has 5 quality settings, 5 colors each and 16 positions each, which quals 400 variations on that light alone (5 x 5 x 16).

If we count Soft Box, Super Spot, Area Light And Magic Sphere alone (that is only 4 of the 11 light types and without the presets, we're hitting 736 variations.

I never make any claims I cannot backup. SLP DS 4.6 has easily over 800 vairations, that is, icons that preload a ready to render light or preset at various quality settings, colors and positions. (It's actually 823, but I didn't count that close)

The product page doesn't mention needing Photoshop or any other software but I am beginning to wonder how accurate it is. In the description it says:

"Choose from hundreds of presets and lights that will change the way you light your DAZ Studio renders forvever..."

But when you look at the "what is included and features" tab it says you get fifteen presets and eleven lights. What happened to the hundreds?

The examples look good but I think I'll wait and see how other people get on with it before deciding.

Unfortunately Dreamlight's hyperbole often get in the way of a good product.

That's not to say I don't like them, I've almost always loved them. But the grandiose claims can really leave the wrong impressions.

They do get a bit carried away at times.

My main reservation about Dreamlight is continued support of their products. I bought Light Dome Pro 2 and Mood Master for Daz Studio 3 and they were excellent products but when Daz Studio went up to version 4 both of these were abandoned, no upgrades paid or otherwise.

With the current state of Daz Studio I expect another upgrade like the 3 to 4 one is unlikely in the near future, but if it was Daz would never tell us until it was about to happen.

Well, now that I got the manual, I have to say I am totally happy! For an expert it would maybe be easy to set lights in DAZ but for a beginner like me, this is a huge help! I am very impressed and the money I spent for this package was worth it! I love it!

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it! The light types and presets are all remade to work with DS 4.6, they render faster than the previous version and they are optimized for better quality. Besides, some of them co-work with UberEnvironment and / or Uber Area lights to further give more options.

When loaded, SLP will place your light / preset at 0,0,0. You can move it to the location of any character, or you can parent it to any character / and reset the lights / presets position so that it will follow your character. You can view how this is done in this YouTube video:
    http://youtu.be/CL1MruJKhkw

As far as advertizing, 800+ presets, lights and variations are what they are, presets, lights and variations with a single click on a mouse button and nothing else. It's clearly stated that there are a number of light types and a number of presets and all together, when combined, offer 800+ creative combinations.

While your "Making of The Raptors" tutorial was created back in the days of DS2 and the original SLP, it still offers some of the best hands on examples not only of using SLP but the basics of com positing.

If you are looking into an upgrade price, can you tell us when the 30% introductory price ends? I am thinking of buying this and I have the original but I don't want to wait too long and find the price going up.

A "quick" render, just about 2 and a half hours... because of the fur... I know it's not Christmas yet, but I couldn't resist. ;-)
Applyed "PinUp Settings" Low A. Olympia as Santa Babe,

A text quickie of Bounty by Morris for Giselle wearing her textures for X-Tech.
    Used Fashion preset 3HIgh A

Was attempting to add a scene set around her and in the process managed to crash the renderer. Will try again later..

Edited to correct a render problem.

I'm thinking of including LDP-R functionality to SLP DS 4.6 edition. Let me know what you think about that!

Does that mean there will, indeed, be an upgrade option? :)

I agree, same here, and I've avoided his products mainly because of it. I did get this one (haven't installed yet) and hope for good things. However, I like others have pretty much switched from Uber to AoA lights and this package depends on Uber. Granted AoA ambient doesn't use HDR images which I will still use but only with HDR Pro sets by Dimension Theory. Otherwise if I use a set I substitute AoA for Uber since AoA can be much much much faster to render and easier to use. I kind of doubt I'll be able to substitute here.
...I find with the AoA Advanced, lights I can get the look and feel of an LDP2 render without having to do a lot of layered postwork like the new version requires. I am disappointed that MoodMaster is obsolete, however,, there too AoA came to the rescue again with the Atmospheric Cameras which has a Depth Camera that can achieve a similar effect. Can't do rain or snow with it yet though.

The old SLP still works in 4.x as it primarily employs an array of spotlights.
