I just started using the strand based hair feature in DS, but cannot find a guide. I did download the book from Garibaldi Express which appears to be the same product... so that should help.
It will take a lot of experimentation, but overall I don;t like the look of this so far.
Does anyone have a recipe to make sort of realistic looking hair with this?
I find it cumbersome to try to style, etc.

Yes, SBH suffers from the usual DAZ "why no documentation?" problem. I believe that the Garibaldi docs are the best you can get (for now).
There's also this forum thread: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/335676/strand-based-hair-mini-tutorial/p1 which may have some useful stuff to get started.
This was the official thread which (despite it's title) is mostly about SBH: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/326996/dforce-hair-as-well-as-strand-based-hair-and-the-strand-based-hair-editor-in-public-beta/p1 - it is very long but there are some examples and helpful hints by general forum users too.
thanks. I will check them out.
SBH is basically the old garibaldi express plugin for daz, so any garibaldi literature or tutorial is mostly valid. Obviously if they start going into 3dl shader properties in the garibaldi tutorial, you can just ignore that since you should probably use the sbh iray shader.
Unfortunately wavy hair is way more difficult to create than straight hair, especially with the tools and the controls available in the SBH editor. If you get it 8tight you will be awarded with great looking hair, but it will take patience and exercise until you get there.
