I am trying to use skins other then the starter genisis 8 skins, any ideas how to "unlock" them?

Mac OS Catalina? There is a known bug in 4.12.0.86 - the current Public Build (beta) has a fix https://www.daz3d.com/daz-studio-beta

Yes i am on Catalina and downloading the beta solved the problem, i have access to my files again.
