Matching Ponytail hair and Flowing hair for a character

Hello all,

I have designed a female character for a visual novel and I need help from you to choose 2 hair products for her.

She is a very action oriented character. I want her to have 2 hairstyles.

One would be a ponytail. I am thinking of Leony as it looks great in promos and also has a wet version, waiting for it or hopefully the bundle to get a good discount. A second option would be Carpathian but it doesn't look as great in the promos and doesn't have enough Gallery entries to see if it's good enough. Any other similar options?

What I need most of your help with is to find a long flowing hair that would match well with the Leony hair, or whatever else you help me choose.

Thanks

I'd go with another OOT hair, the one I've linked.

The trickiest thing to me is finding two hairstyles where the actual hair looks to have the same volume, and then the second is finding the right part.  You'd do best probably picking two examples from teh same vendor, because even though the Classic Wavy DForce Hair has the part on the right side (and is wonderful hair) it will undoubetly look different than the Leony ponytail.

Unfortunately, I don't have any great suggestions for you because I don't own many hair products, but from experience I can tell you that even if two hairstyles look like they could both belong to the same person, if they are made by different vendors it's very possible they will look completely different post-render.  OOT is a great vendor for hair, and perhaps Georgia Hair or Super Sleeky Hair would pair well with one of the ponytails...

I have it in my wishlist as well but it is for G3. Does it translate without a hitch to G8? Also, what unbound hair would you consider to be the equivalent of this? Meaning if my character would not keep her her in this ponytail, how would her hair look?

Also, the hair from this promo picture looks good but I'm not sure what it is as it is not listed.

You'd want to change scene identification, or just parent, rather than auto-fitting, because autofit would destroy whatever bones there might be in the ponytail itself.

Ok I will try that, because I already tried some G3 hair products on G8 and not all looked good but I tried them with autofit. Can anyone that owns Rochelle ponytail and Georgia Hair try them with parent on G8 and let me know if they look as good as on G3?

    Easily.

The tool linked is great for transfering a lot, but for just one or two - Click on the item > Edit menu > Figure > Scene Identification; then change the Preferred Base to G8 Female. Or you could Fit To, but changing the preferred base is better between g3 and g8 as a rule.

How about Emilia or Cailin or even Lainey if you dial it long and Leony short. Getting the parting to match is the tricky bit, but that might depend on whether you're depicting her letting her hair down/putting it up - in which case the parting needs to be in the same place - or whether she's wearing her hair differently on different occasions - in which case she might part her hair differently (or not at all).

Using G3 hair on G8 (and vice versa) isn't usually a problem. See this tutorial by Sickleyield: https://www.deviantart.com/sickleyield/journal/Tutorial-Convert-Clothing-G3-to-G8-G8-to-G3-686682065

I've done sequences where a character changes her hairstyle, and you can actually get away with a lot - differences that might look really glaring to you as you obsess about the details won't be noticed at all by your readers (at least, let's hope not!).

Thank you for the suggestion, I already have the converters in mind, if they get really cheap but I would not buy them just to convert 1 or 2 hair products for my character right now. I started with Daz this november so my number of G3 products that I need to convert is pretty limited.

@alex86fire, I'd recommend finding the long flowing hair first, then finding a ponytail that looks like it could be the same hair.

My first question is whether or not your computer can handle dForce. I think you'll get the most mileage out of the long flowing hair if you can use dForce, as it will allow you to match the pose and outfit more accurately. But if your computer doesn't do well with dforce, than those hairs won't be an option for you. (If you intend to upgrade your computer to something that can handle dForce, you might want to find two long flowing hair products that look similar, one with dForce and one without, buying the second and wishlisting the first…)

Once you have settled on a long style, then look for a ponytail style that "could be" the same hair, as far as your viewers are concerned.

Here are some possible combinations for G8F, (you didn't mention what base your are using. I'm assuming the most recent to date.)

    1. Both of these are "wavy":
    2. These are rather curly:
    3. And these are both long and "sleek", very straight, and neither one uses dForce Cloth or dForce Hair.

I hope these pairs will get you started in your search. Good luck.

  • Also, the hair from this promo picture looks good but I'm not sure what it is as it is not listed.

Pretty sure the hair that you linked to is the Leony hair that you already stated you liked. :-)

Thank you for your detailed response.

Yes, my Pc can handle dForce (I have a RTX 2070 Super).

I would not go with curly hair.

The sleek on looks nice but for the ponytail one I would prefer something that has some part of it slipping in the front if possible like Rochelle, Leony or the one in this promo if anyone can identify it. A decent looking ponytail hair without those bangs that I already own is the sleek ponytail as it came with Zelara bundle but I'm not sure how good it is as I haven't used it yet.

A hair that looks like it would match these pretty well and I already have it is Elena hair but unfortunately it has the headband linked to it and I'm not so sure about that look for my character.

Another hair that I own but haven't played with yet so not sure how good it is is Wild Wind Hair.

For matching the color of the hair I think I could use ColorWerks Hair shaders as I already have it.

Damn :), I was hoping it was a third alternative that looked good to me.

Lainey looks the best to me from those options, although as you said, I would have to dial them up and down to be around the same length.

At this moment I don't plan on switching in the same scene from ponytail to no ponytail although it might happen now that you mention it.

I am also hoping I can get the ponytail to look disheveled as she is going to be in quite a few fight scenes, some of which are bound to mess with her hair.

Here's an example of multiple hairs used in a scene. A girl goes into the shower with Georgia hair, and ends up with Topmodel Updo - via three other hairs and a towel prop. As the creator, I can see the flaws in my choices, but I think they're less obvious to the viewer,

  • In my experience OOT hairs never disappoint with movement and quality and they tend to do same color shades across all hair models making them easy to match.

If you've picked Leony, looking through OOT store several flowing hairs have similar bang options to have it match: Caprice, Sophia and possibly Emilia.

Keep in mind that if there's a length morph, you can make it longer by turning limits off. Also women put their hair in all sorts of hairstyles, use curling irons and flat irons and often use hair extensions, so as long as the color is the same, you can pretty much use anything!
